Financial phantasmagoria: corporate image-work in times of crisis
Our purpose in this article is to relate the real movements in the economy during 2008 to the ?image-work? of financial institutions. Over the period January?December 2008 we collected 241 separate advertisements from 61 financial institutions published in the Financial Times. Reading across the ensemble of advertisements for themes and evocative images provides an impression of the financial imaginaries created by these organizations as the global financial crisis unfolded. In using the term ?phantasmagoria? we move beyond its colloquial sense of a set of strange images designed to dazzle towards the more technical connotation used by Ranci�re (2004) who suggested that words and images can offer a trace of an overall determining set-up if they are torn from their obviousness so they become phantasmagoric figures. The key phantasmagoric figure we identify here is that of the financial institution as timeless, immortal and unchanging; a coherent and autonomous entity amongst other actors. This notion of uniqueness belies the commonality of thinking which precipitated the global financial crisis as well as the limited capacity for control of financial institutions in relation to market events. It also functions as a powerful naturalizing force, making it hard to question certain aspects of the recent period of ?capitalism in crisis?
A Practical Cryptanalysis of the Algebraic Eraser
Anshel, Anshel, Goldfeld and Lemieaux introduced the Colored Burau Key
Agreement Protocol (CBKAP) as the concrete instantiation of their Algebraic
Eraser scheme. This scheme, based on techniques from permutation groups, matrix
groups and braid groups, is designed for lightweight environments such as RFID
tags and other IoT applications. It is proposed as an underlying technology for
ISO/IEC 29167-20. SecureRF, the company owning the trademark Algebraic Eraser,
has presented the scheme to the IRTF with a view towards standardisation.
We present a novel cryptanalysis of this scheme. For parameter sizes
corresponding to claimed 128-bit security, our implementation recovers the
shared key using less than 8 CPU hours, and less than 64MB of memory.Comment: 15 pages. Updated references, with brief comments added. Minor typos

Fermi-surface topology of the iron pnictide LaFeP
We report on a comprehensive de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) study of the iron
pnictide LaFeP. Our extensive density-functional band-structure
calculations can well explain the measured angular-dependent dHvA frequencies.
As salient feature, we observe only one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface
sheet, i.e., a hole-like Fermi-surface cylinder around , essential for
pairing, is missing. In spite of considerable mass enhancements due to
many-body effects, LaFeP shows no superconductivity. This is likely
caused by the absence of any nesting between electron and hole bands.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Statics and dynamics of domain patterns in hexagonal-orthorhombic ferroelastics
We study the statics and the dynamics of domain patterns in proper
hexagonal-orthorhombic ferroelastics; these patterns are of particular interest
because they provide a rare physical realization of disclinations in crystals.
Both our static and dynamical theories are based entirely on classical,
nonlinear elasticity theory; we use the minimal theory consistent with
stability, symmetry and ability to explain qualitatively the observed patterns.
After scaling, the only parameters of the static theory are a temperature
variable and a stiffness variable. For moderate to large stiffness, our static
results show nested stars, unnested stars, fans and other nodes, triangular and
trapezoidal regions of trapped hexagonal phase, etc observed in electron
microscopy of Ta4N and Mg-Cd alloys, and also in lead orthovanadate (which is
trigonal-monoclinic); we even find imperfections in some nodes, like those
observed. For small stiffness, we find patterns like those observed in the
mineral Mg-cordierite. Our dynamical studies of growth and relaxation show the
formation of these static patterns, and also transitory structures such as
12-armed bursts, streamers and striations which are also seen experimentally.
The major aspects of the growth-relaxation process are quite unlike those in
systems with conventional order parameters, for it is inherently nonlocal; for
example, the changes from one snapshot to the next are not predictable by

Xenopus fraseri: Mr. Fraser, where did your frog come from?
A comprehensive, accurate, and revisable alpha taxonomy is crucial for biodiversity studies, but is challenging when data from reference specimens are difficult to collect or observe. However, recent technological advances can overcome some of these challenges. To illustrate this, we used modern approaches to tackle a centuries-old taxonomic enigma presented by Fraser’s Clawed Frog, Xenopus fraseri, including whether X. fraseri is different from other species, and if so, where it is situated geographically and phylogenetically. To facilitate these inferences, we used high-resolution techniques to examine morphological variation, and we generated and analyzed complete mitochondrial genome sequences from all Xenopus species, including >150-year-old type specimens. Our results demonstrate that X. fraseri is indeed distinct from other species, firmly place this species within a phylogenetic context, and identify its minimal geographic distribution in northern Ghana and northern Cameroon. These data also permit novel phylogenetic resolution into this intensively studied and biomedically important group. Xenopus fraseri was formerly thought to be a rainforest endemic placed alongside species in the amieti species group; in fact this species occurs in arid habitat on the borderlands of the Sahel, and is the smallest member of the muelleri species group. This study illustrates that the taxonomic enigma of Fraser’s frog was a combined consequence of sparse collection records, interspecies conservation and intraspecific polymorphism in external anatomy, and type specimens with unusual morphology
Upper limits on a stochastic background of gravitational waves
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory has performed a third science run with much improved sensitivities of all three interferometers. We present an analysis of approximately 200 hours of data acquired during this run, used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. We place upper bounds on the energy density stored as gravitational radiation for three different spectral power laws. For the flat spectrum, our limit of 0 \u3c 8.4 × 10 -4 in the 69-156 Hz band is ∼10 5 times lower than the previous result in this frequency range. © 2005 The American Physical Society
The Legacy of ERA, Privatization and the Policy Ratchet
This article explores the ways in which the neo-liberal impetus toward the privatization of state schooling signalled in the Education Reform Act 1988 (ERA) has become embedded in the English school system. Four main points are made. First, that ERA itself was of huge strategic rather than substantive importance as far as privatization is concerned. Second, by tracing the lineage of privatization from ERA onwards a 'ratchet' effect of small and incremental policy moves can be identified, which have disseminated, embedded and naturalized privatization within public sector provision. Third, that while privatization has been taken up and taken much further by New Labour than it had been by the Conservatives there are differences between the two sets of governments in the role of privatization in education policy and the role of the state. Fourth, the participation of private providers in the planning and delivery of state services has put the private sector at the very heart of policy. Search for gravitational-wave bursts in LIGO \u27s third science run
We report on a search for gravitational-wave bursts in data from the three LIGO interferometric detectors during their third science run. The search targets subsecond bursts in the frequency range 100-1100 Hz for which no waveform model is assumed and has a sensitivity in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude of hrss ∼ 10-20 Hz -1/2. No gravitational-wave signals were detected in the eight days of analysed data. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd
Molecular characterization of a marine turtle tumor epizootic, profiling external, internal and postsurgical regrowth tumors
Sea turtle populations are under threat from an epizootic tumor disease (animal epidemic) known as fibropapillomatosis. Fibropapillomatosis continues to spread geographically, with prevalence of the disease also growing at many longer-affected sites globally. However, we do not yet understand the precise environmental, mutational and viral events driving fibropapillomatosis tumor formation and progression.
Here we perform transcriptomic and immunohistochemical profiling of five fibropapillomatosis tumor types: external new, established and postsurgical regrowth tumors, and internal lung and kidney tumors. We reveal that internal tumors are molecularly distinct from the more common external tumors. However, they have a small number of conserved potentially therapeutically targetable molecular vulnerabilities in common, such as the MAPK, Wnt, TGFβ and TNF oncogenic signaling pathways. These conserved oncogenic drivers recapitulate remarkably well the core pan-cancer drivers responsible for human cancers. Fibropapillomatosis has been considered benign, but metastatic-related transcriptional signatures are strongly activated in kidney and established external tumors. Tumors in turtles with poor outcomes (died/euthanized) have genes associated with apoptosis and immune function suppressed, with these genes providing putative predictive biomarkers.
Together, these results offer an improved understanding of fibropapillomatosis tumorigenesis and provide insights into the origins, inter-tumor relationships, and therapeutic treatment for this wildlife epizootic
