Laser desorption/ionization
(LDI) was investigated as an ionization
method for Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry
(FTICR MS) studies of natural organic matter (NOM). Using International
Humic Substances Society standards, Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA)
and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), LDI was found to
ionize a very similar set of compounds (>90% of molecular formulas
identity) to the matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI),
while producing higher quality spectra. A comparison of electrospray
ionization (ESI) and LDI spectra showed that different types of compounds
are ionized by these methods with only 9.9% of molecular formulas
common to both. The compounds ionized by LDI/MALDI belong to low oxygen
classes (maximum number of species for O7âO9), while ESI compounds
belong to higher oxygen classes (maximum number of species for O14âO16).
Compounds ionized by LDI can be classified as aliphatic, aromatic,
and condensed aromatics in approximately equal measure, while aliphatic
compounds dominated the ESI spectra of SRFA. In order to maximize
the coverage of molecular species, LDI, as a particularly convenient
and readily deployable ionization method, should be used routinely
in combination with other ionization methods, such as ESI, for FTICR
MS studies of NOM
Quasistationary binary inspiral. I. Einstein equations for the two Killing vector spacetime
The geometry of two infinitely long lines of mass moving in a fixed circular
orbit is considered as a toy model for the inspiral of a binary system of
compact objects due to gravitational radiation. The two Killing fields in the
toy model are used, according to a formalism introduced by Geroch, to describe
the geometry entirely in terms of a set of tensor fields on the two-manifold of
Killing vector orbits. Geroch's derivation of the Einstein equations in this
formalism is streamlined and generalized. The explicit Einstein equations for
the toy model spacetime are derived in terms of the degrees of freedom which

Progress on stochastic background search codes for LIGO
One of the types of signals for which the LIGO interferometric gravitational
wave detectors will search is a stochastic background of gravitational
radiation. We review the technique of searching for a background using the
optimally-filtered cross-correlation statistic, and describe the state of plans
to perform such cross-correlations between the two LIGO interferometers as well
as between LIGO and other gravitational-wave detectors, in particular the

Stochastic Background Search Correlating ALLEGRO with LIGO Engineering Data
We describe the role of correlation measurements between the LIGO
interferometer in Livingston, LA, and the ALLEGRO resonant bar detector in
Baton Rouge, LA, in searches for a stochastic background of gravitational
waves. Such measurements provide a valuable complement to correlations between
interferometers at the two LIGO sites, since they are sensitive in a different,
higher, frequency band. Additionally, the variable orientation of the ALLEGRO
detector provides a means to distinguish gravitational wave correlations from
correlated environmental noise. We describe the analysis underway to set a
limit on the strength of a stochastic background at frequencies near 900 Hz
using ALLEGRO data and data from LIGO's E7 Engineering Run.Comment: 8 pages, 2 encapsulated PostScript figures, uses IOP class files,

Observational Limit on Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron Stars in the Galaxy
Using optimal matched filtering, we search 25 hours of data from the LIGO
40-meter prototype laser interferometric gravitational-wave detector for
gravitational-wave chirps emitted by coalescing binary systems within our
Galaxy. This is the first test of this filtering technique on real
interferometric data. An upper limit on the rate R of neutron star binary
inspirals in our Galaxy is obtained: with 90% confidence, R< 0.5/hour. Similar
experiments with LIGO interferometers will provide constraints on the

Fast digitization and discrimination of prompt neutron and photon signals using a novel silicon carbide detector
Current requirements of some Homeland Security active interrogation projects for the detection of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) necessitate the development of faster inspection and acquisition capabilities. In order to do so, fast detectors which can operate during and shortly after intense interrogation radiation flashes are being developed. Novel silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor Schottky diodes have been utilized as robust neutron and photon detectors in both pulsed photon and pulsed neutron fields and are being integrated into active inspection environments to allow exploitation of both prompt and delayed emissions. These detectors have demonstrated the capability of detecting both photon and neutron events during intense photon flashes typical of an active inspection environment. Beyond the inherent insensitivity of SiC to gamma radiation, fast digitization and processing has demonstrated that pulse shape discrimination (PSD) in combination with amplitude discrimination can further suppress unwanted gamma signals and extract fast neutron signatures. Usable neutron signals have been extracted from mixed radiation fields where the background has exceeded the signals of interest by >1000:1
Persistent anthrax as a major driver of wildlife mortality in a tropical rainforest
Anthrax is a globally important animal disease and zoonosis. Despite this, our current knowledge of anthrax ecology is largely limited to arid ecosystems, where outbreaks are most commonly reported. Here we show that the dynamics of an anthrax-causing agent, Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis, in a tropical rainforest have severe consequences for local wildlife communities. Using data and samples collected over three decades, we show that rainforest anthrax is a persistent and widespread cause of death for a broad range of mammalian hosts. We predict that this pathogen will accelerate the decline and possibly result in the extirpation of local chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) populations. We present the epidemiology of a cryptic pathogen and show that its presence has important implications for conservation
Putting into Question the Imaginary of Recovery: A Dialectical Reading of the Global Financial Crisis and its Aftermath
In this article we put into question the discourses that emerged during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and that coalesced around a particular socio-economic imaginary of ?recovery? over the period 2009-2012. Our reading of these discourses is very much guided by the notion of the dialectic as developed by Fredric Jameson, and as such this paper can be read as attempt to put his theoretical ideas to work. Through our dialectical reading we aim to create a certain estrangement effect that makes the imaginary of recovery seem very odd and unnatural. In order to achieve such an effect we postulate four theses which are deliberately antagonistic: first, that there has been no ?crisis of capitalism?; second, that we must change the valence of the GFC from negative to positive; third, that the relationship between finance capitalism and ?free markets? is deeply contradictory; and fourth, that we must resist the regulation discourse
