    Iowa\u27s agriculture is chiefly corn-hog farming. Corn, which is produced in abundance, provides the raw material upon which the gigantic livestock industry depends. The sale of swine is the most important source of income of the state. Profound changes have taken place in the economics of hog marketing during the last decade. Three-fifths of Iowa hogs are today sold direct to packers; receipts at public stockyards have declined accordingly. Concentration points have been established throughout the hog producing area. Order buying has become well developed. Add to these the improvements in rural transportation, better market news facilities, standardization of hog grades and the comparatively large scale country buying that is practiced today and it becomes apparent that the machinery for marketing hogs is strikingly different from that which served producers only a few years ago

    η\eta Carinae's Dusty Homunculus Nebula from Near-Infrared to Submillimeter Wavelengths: Mass, Composition, and Evidence for Fading Opacity

    Infrared observations of the dusty, massive Homunculus Nebula around the luminous blue variable η\eta Carinae are crucial to characterize the mass-loss history and help constrain the mechanisms leading to the Great Eruption. We present the 2.4 - 670 μ\mum spectral energy distribution, constructed from legacy ISO observations and new spectroscopy obtained with the {\em{Herschel Space Observatory}}. Using radiative transfer modeling, we find that the two best-fit dust models yield compositions which are consistent with CNO-processed material, with iron, pyroxene and other metal-rich silicates, corundum, and magnesium-iron sulfide in common. Spherical corundum grains are supported by the good match to a narrow 20.2 μ\mum feature. Our preferred model contains nitrides AlN and Si3_3N4_4 in low abundances. Dust masses range from 0.25 to 0.44 MM_\odot but MtotM_{\rm{tot}} \ge 45 MM_\odot in both cases due to an expected high Fe gas-to-dust ratio. The bulk of dust is within a 5"" ×\times 7"" central region. An additional compact feature is detected at 390 μ\mum. We obtain LIRL_{\rm{IR}} = 2.96 ×\times 106^6 LL_\odot, a 25\% decline from an average of mid-IR photometric levels observed in 1971-1977. This indicates a reduction in circumstellar extinction in conjunction with an increase in visual brightness, allowing 25-40\% of optical and UV radiation to escape from the central source. We also present an analysis of 12^{12}CO and 13^{13}CO J=54J = 5-4 through 989-8 lines, showing that the abundances are consistent with expectations for CNO-processed material. The [12^{12}C~{\sc{ii}}] line is detected in absorption, which we suspect originates in foreground material at very low excitation temperatures.Comment: Accepted in Ap

    Has the regulation of non-GAAP disclosures influenced managers' use of aggressive earnings exclusions?

    The frequency of non-GAAP (“pro forma”) reporting has continued to increase in the U.S. over the last decade despite preliminary evidence that regulatory intervention led to a decline in non-GAAP disclosures. In particular, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) and Regulation G (2003) impose strict requirements related to the reporting of non-GAAP numbers. More recently, the SEC has renewed its emphasis on non-GAAP reporting and declared it a “fraud risk factor.” Given the SEC’s renewed emphasis on non-GAAP disclosures, we explore the extent to which regulation has curbed potentially misleading disclosures by investigating two measures of aggressive non-GAAP reporting. Consistent with the intent of Congress and the SEC, we find some evidence that managers report adjusted earnings metrics more cautiously in the post-SOX regulatory environment. Specifically, the results suggest that firms reporting non-GAAP earnings in the post-SOX period are less likely to (1) exclude recurring items incremental to those excluded by analysts and (2) use non-GAAP exclusions to meet strategic earnings targets on a non-GAAP basis that they miss based on I/B/E/S actual earnings. However, we also find that some firms exclude specific recurring items aggressively. Overall, the results suggest that while regulation has generally reduced aggressive non-GAAP reporting, some firms continue to disclose non-GAAP earnings numbers that could be misleading in the post-SOX regulatory environment

    Trafficking of High Avidity HER-2/neu-Specific T Cells into HER-2/neu-Expressing Tumors after Depletion of Effector/Memory-Like Regulatory T Cells

    Cancer vaccines are designed to activate and enhance cancer-antigen-targeted T cells that are suppressed through multiple mechanisms of immune tolerance in cancer-bearing hosts. T regulatory cell (Treg) suppression of tumor-specific T cells is one barrier to effective immunization. A second mechanism is the deletion of high avidity tumor-specific T cells, which leaves a less effective low avidity tumor specific T cell repertoire available for activation by vaccines. Treg depleting agents including low dose cyclophosphamide (Cy) and antibodies that deplete CD25-expressing Tregs have been used with limited success to enhance the potency of tumor-specific vaccines. In addition, few studies have evaluated mechanisms that activate low avidity cancer antigen-specific T cells. Therefore, we developed high and low avidity HER-2/neu-specific TCR transgenic mouse colonies specific for the same HER-2/neu epitope to define the tolerance mechanisms that specifically affect high versus low avidity tumor-specific T cells.High and low avidity CD8(+) T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic mice specific for the breast cancer antigen HER-2/neu (neu) were developed to provide a purified source of naïve, tumor-specific T cells that can be used to study tolerance mechanisms. Adoptive transfer studies into tolerant FVB/N-derived HER-2/neu transgenic (neu-N) mice demonstrated that high avidity, but not low avidity, neu-specific T cells are inhibited by Tregs as the dominant tolerizing mechanism. High avidity T cells persisted, produced IFNγ, trafficked into tumors, and lysed tumors after adoptive transfer into mice treated with a neu-specific vaccine and low dose Cy to deplete Tregs. Analysis of Treg subsets revealed a Cy-sensitive CD4(+)Foxp3(+)CD25(low) tumor-seeking migratory phenotype, characteristic of effector/memory Tregs, and capable of high avidity T cell suppression.Depletion of CD25(low) Tregs allows activation of tumor-clearing high avidity T cells. Thus, the development of agents that specifically deplete Treg subsets should translate into more effective immunotherapies while avoiding autoimmunity

    Antibacterial Activity of Partially Oxidized Ag/Au Nanoparticles against the Oral Pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis

    Advances in nanotechnology provide opportunities for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. While physicochemical properties of Ag containing nanoparticles (NPs) are known to influence the magnitude of their toxicity, it is thought that nanosilver can be made less toxic to eukaryotes by passivation of the NPs with a benign metal. Moreover, the addition of other noble metals to silver nanoparticles, in the alloy formulation, is known to alter the silver dissolution behavior. Thus, we synthesized glutathione capped Ag/Au alloy bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) via the galvanic replacement reaction between maltose coated Ag NPs and chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) in 5% aqueous triblock F127 copolymer solution. We then compared the antibacterial activity of the Ag/Au NPs to pure Ag NPs on Porphyromonas gingivalis W83, a key pathogen in the development of periodontal disease. Only partially oxidized glutathione capped Ag and Ag/Au (Au : Ag ≈ 0.2) NPs inhibited the planktonic growth of P. gingivalis W83. This effect was enhanced in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, which simulates the oxidative stress environment in the periodontal pocket during chronic inflammation

    Homocysteine in dogs with systemic inflammatory response syndrome

    OBJECTIVES - To compare serum concentrations of homocysteine (Hcy) in dogs fitting the criteria for the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and healthy dogs, and compare these values to commonly measured B-vitamins. METHODS – Study dogs were classified into noninfectious SIRS or sepsis groups and blood was drawn on Day 1 of the patient’s hospitalization for the measurement of Hcy, folate and cobalamin concentrations. Hcy was measured in 51 clinically normal dogs to serve as the control group. RESULTS - A statistically significant difference was found between the Hcy concentrations of the healthy group when compared to noninfectious SIRS and sepsis groups. Hcy values were not correlated with folate, cobalamin or APPLEfast severity scores. Hcy concentrations were significantly lower in sick dogs when compared to the control group, which is dissimilar to the human population. CLINICAL SIGNIFCANCE - The clinical significance of Hcy changes in critically ill dogs is currently unknown.http://aac.asm.orghb2014ab201
