870 micron observations of nearby 3CRR radio galaxies

We present submillimeter continuum observations at 870 microns of the cores of low redshift 3CRR radio galaxies, observed at the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope. The cores are nearly flat spectrum between the radio and submillimeter which implies that the submillimeter continuum is likely to be synchrotron emission and not thermal emission from dust. The emitted power from nuclei detected at optical wavelengths and in the X-rays is similar in the submillimeter, optical and X-rays. The submillimeter to optical and X-ray power ratios suggest that most of these sources resemble misdirected BL Lac type objects with synchrotron emission peaking at low energies. However we find three exceptions, the FR I galaxy 3C264 and the FR II galaxies 3C390.3 and 3C338 with high X-ray to submillimeter luminosity ratios. These three objects are candidate high or intermediate energy peaked BL Lac type objects. With additional infrared observations and from archival data, we compile spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for a subset of these objects. The steep dips observed near the optical wavelengths in many of these objects suggest that extinction inhibits the detection and reduces the flux of optical continuum core counterparts. High resolution near or mid-infrared imaging may provide better measurements of the underlying synchrotron emission peak.Comment: accepted for publication in A

Local Stressors Reduce Coral Resilience to Bleaching

    Get PDF
Coral bleaching, during which corals lose their symbiotic dinoflagellates, typically corresponds with periods of intense heat stress, and appears to be increasing in frequency and geographic extent as the climate warms. A fundamental question in coral reef ecology is whether chronic local stress reduces coral resistance and resilience from episodic stress such as bleaching, or alternatively promotes acclimatization, potentially increasing resistance and resilience. Here we show that following a major bleaching event, Montastraea faveolata coral growth rates at sites with higher local anthropogenic stressors remained suppressed for at least 8 years, while coral growth rates at sites with lower stress recovered in 2–3 years. Instead of promoting acclimatization, our data indicate that background stress reduces coral fitness and resilience to episodic events. We also suggest that reducing chronic stress through local coral reef management efforts may increase coral resilience to global climate change

A pilot study of basal ganglia and thalamus structure by high dimensional mapping in children with Tourette syndrome

Background: Prior brain imaging and autopsy studies have suggested that structural abnormalities of the basal ganglia (BG) nuclei may be present in Tourette Syndrome (TS). These studies have focused mainly on the volume differences of the BG structures and not their anatomical shapes.  Shape differences of various brain structures have been demonstrated in other neuropsychiatric disorders using large-deformation, high dimensional brain mapping (HDBM-LD).  A previous study of a small sample of adult TS patients demonstrated the validity of the method, but did not find significant differences compared to controls. Since TS usually begins in childhood and adult studies may show structure differences due to adaptations, we hypothesized that differences in BG and thalamus structure geometry and volume due to etiological changes in TS might be better characterized in children. Objective: Pilot the HDBM-LD method in children and estimate effect sizes. Methods: In this pilot study, T1-weighted MRIs were collected in 13 children with TS and 16 healthy, tic-free, control children. The groups were well matched for age.  The primary outcome measures were the first 10 eigenvectors which are derived using HDBM-LD methods and represent the majority of the geometric shape of each structure, and the volumes of each structure adjusted for whole brain volume. We also compared hemispheric right/left asymmetry and estimated effect sizes for both volume and shape differences between groups. Results: We found no statistically significant differences between the TS subjects and controls in volume, shape, or right/left asymmetry.  Effect sizes were greater for shape analysis than for volume. Conclusion: This study represents one of the first efforts to study the shape as opposed to the volume of the BG in TS, but power was limited by sample size. Shape analysis by the HDBM-LD method may prove more sensitive to group differences

The effect of lymphatic microsurgical preventive healing approach (LYMPHA) on the development of upper-extremity lymphedema following axillary lymph node dissection in breast cancer patients

Background/Objective: Lymphedema following axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is a common complication that can negatively impact quality of life as it reduces the functional capacity of the affected arm. It can also predispose patients to serious infectious complications such as limb cellulitis and development of malignancy. The lymphatic microsurgical preventive healing approach (LYMPHA procedure) involves the creation of a lymphatic‐to‐venous bypass at the time of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) as a means of preventing lymphedema. The goal of our study is to assess the effect of LYMPHA on the development of clinical and subjective post‐operative lymphedema. Methods: This is a prospective longitudinal study in patients with breast cancer who underwent ALND with or without LYMPHA. The incidence of lymphedema was compared between ALND alone and ALND with LYMPHA using descriptive statistics. Limb circumference of both affected and unaffected limbs were measured and used to calculate limb volume by using an equation that converts limb circumference (cm) to volume (cc). Lymphedema was defined as a volume difference of ≄10% between the affected and unaffected limb. Patient symptoms were also assessed and compared between the 2 groups. Patient demographics including age, preoperative body mass index (BMI), smoking history, comorbidities, receipt of neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy, and receipt of adjuvant radiation were compared between the groups. Results: In our cohort of 139 patients, 104 underwent ALND with LYMPHA, while 35 underwent ALND alone. Of these, 52.5% of patients had documented interlimb circumference measurements. The mean age was 52.6 years old, mean BMI was 30.16 kg/m2, 4 patients (2.9%) had pre‐operative radiation, 102 patients (73.4 %) had post‐operative radiation, 86 patients (61.9 %) had neoadjuvant chemotherapy, 41 and 58 patients (41.7 %) had adjuvant chemotherapy. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in the above demographics and treatment variables, except those who underwent ALND alone had a significantly higher incidence of diabetes mellitus (25.7% patients with ALND alone vs 11.5% LYMPHA patients (p=0.043)). Based on patient reported symptoms and the need to initiate complete decongestive therapy, 57.1% (n=20) of patients who underwent ALND alone developed lymphedema compared to 26.9% (n=28 patients) of those who had ALND with LYMPHA (p=0.0011). When comparing the relative volume difference, 57.1% (n=8) of ALND alone patients developed lymphedema versus 20.3% (n=12) of LYMPHA patients (p=0.0055). Conclusions: Our data support the universal use of LYMPHA at the time of ALND as a means of preventing upper extremity lymphedema. Further studies are needed to evaluate quality of life and functional differences between those who had LYMPHA and those who did not

Linguistic changes in neurodegenerative diseases relate to clinical symptoms

BackgroundThe detection and characterization of speech changes may help in the identification and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases. However, there is limited research validating the relationship between speech changes and clinical symptoms across a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases.MethodWe analyzed speech recordings from 109 patients who were diagnosed with various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, and Vascular Cognitive Impairment, in a cognitive neurology memory clinic. Speech recordings of an open-ended picture description task were processed using the Winterlight speech analysis platform which generates >500 speech features, including the acoustics of speech and linguistic properties of spoken language. We investigated the relationship between the speech features and clinical assessments including the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS), Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), and Boston Naming Task (BNT) in a heterogeneous patient population.ResultLinguistic features including lexical and syntactic features were significantly correlated with clinical assessments in patients, across diagnoses. Lower MMSE and DRS scores were associated with the use of shorter words and fewer prepositional phrases. Increased impairment on WAB and BNT was correlated with the use of fewer nouns but more pronouns. Patients also differed from healthy adults as their speech duration was significantly shorter with more pauses.ConclusionLinguistic changes such as the use of simpler vocabularies and syntax were detectable in patients with different neurodegenerative diseases and correlated with cognitive decline. Speech has the potential to be a sensitive measure for detecting cognitive impairments across various neurodegenerative diseases

Investigating sex differences in rates and correlates of food addiction status in women and men with ptsd

Background: Food addiction (FA) is a dysregulated eating pattern characterized by difficulties in controlling the intake of certain foods. There is an overlap in physical and mental health correlates of FA and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to examine sex differences in the rates of positive FA status in individuals with threshold/subthreshold PTSD, and to examine sex differences in the physical and mental health correlates of FA. Methods: Post-9/11 veterans/service members seeking PTSD treatment were recruited. Participants were diagnosed with PTSD via the administration of a clinical interview. FA status was determined using Modified Yale Food Addiction Scale-2, binary sex and body mass index were assessed with demographics questions. Results: Nearly half (43%) of the sample were women. There were no sex differences in the rates of FA, with an overall FA prevalence of 18%. There were no sex differences in FA symptom count in the whole sample (M = 1.63) or those with FA status (M = 6.21). Individuals with FA reported higher frequency of disordered eating, higher severity of PTSD, and depression symptoms. Conclusions: FA should be assessed in tandem with PTSD symptoms, as its prevalence in that sample is higher than in the general population, and it appears to affect both sexes at similar rates

Assessing the Development of Civic Mindedness in a Cohort of Physical Therapy Students

    Get PDF
Introduction and Background Colleges and universities have an obligation to educate graduate students who demonstrate civic literacy and who can engage in civic inquiry and action. Service-learning and community engagement courses are highly effective in developing civic-mindedness. Graduate professional programs may have additional reasons for focusing on development of civic mindedness. The purpose of this paper is 1) to determine if civic-mindedness increased in a cohort of physical therapy students exposed to a variety of civic engagement programs and service-learning courses and 2) to determine if there is a difference in civic-mindedness between students serving on a clinic Student Board and their classmates in a graduate physical therapy program. Methods The Civic-Minded Professional Scale (CMP) is a 23-item, 7-point Likert-scale survey designed to measure the domains of self-identity; work, career and profession; and civic attitudes, civic action, and public purpose to measure the construct of civic-mindedness. The CMP was administered to a cohort of graduate physical therapy students at the beginning of the professional curriculum and at the end of each of three years of didactic coursework. Results Friedman’s repeated measures ANOVA with post hoc testing revealed that civic mindedness increased in our students throughout the course of the graduate physical therapy curriculum. Discussion and Conclusion Students involved in service-learning coursework imbedded throughout a graduate physical therapy program had increases in civic-mindedness. Service-learning coursework may be an effective way to develop civic mindedness in graduate students

Characterisation of GLUT4 trafficking in HeLa cells: comparable kinetics and orthologous trafficking mechanisms to 3T3-L1 adipocytes

    Get PDF
Insulin-stimulated glucose transport is a characteristic property of adipocytes and muscle cells and involves the regulated delivery of glucose transporter (GLUT4)-containing vesicles from intracellular stores to the cell surface. Fusion of these vesicles results in increased numbers of GLUT4 molecules at the cell surface. In an attempt to overcome some of the limitations associated with both primary and cultured adipocytes, we expressed an epitope- and GFP-tagged version of GLUT4 (HA–GLUT4–GFP) in HeLa cells. Here we report the characterisation of this system compared to 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We show that insulin promotes translocation of HA–GLUT4–GFP to the surface of both cell types with similar kinetics using orthologous trafficking machinery. While the magnitude of the insulin-stimulated translocation of GLUT4 is smaller than mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes, HeLa cells offer a useful, experimentally tractable, human model system. Here, we exemplify their utility through a small-scale siRNA screen to identify GOSR1 and YKT6 as potential novel regulators of GLUT4 trafficking in human cells
