Effects of soil-moisture content on shallow seismic data
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from "http://library.seg.org".Repeated shallowâseismic experiments were conducted at a site on days with different nearâsurface moisture conditions in unconsolidated material. Experimental field parameters remained constant to ensure comparability of results. Variations in the seismic data are attributed to the changes in soilâmoisture content of the unconsolidated material. Higher amplitudes of reflections and refractions were obtained under wetter nearâsurface conditions. An increase in amplitude of 21 dB in the 100â300 Hz frequency range was observed when the moisture content increased from 18% to 36% in the upper 0.15 m (0.5 ft) of the subsurface. In the timeâdomain records, highly saturated soil conditions caused largeâamplitude ringy wavelets that interfered with and degraded the appearance of some of the reflection information in the raw field data. This may indicate that an intermediate nearâsurface moisture content is most conducive to the recording of highâquality shallowâseismic reflection data at this site. This study illustrates the drastic changes that can occur in shallowâseismic data due to variations in nearâsurface moisture conditions. These conditions may need to be considered to optimize the acquisition timing and parameters prior to collection of data
Do trust-based beliefs mediate the associations of frequency of private prayer with mental health? : a cross-sectional study.
Significant associations of private prayer with mental health have been found, while mechanisms underlying these associations are largely unknown. This cross-sectional online study (N = 325, age: 35.74, SD: 18.50, 77.5% female) used path modeling to test if trust-based beliefs (whether, when, and how prayers are answered) mediated the associations of prayer frequency with the Anxiety, Confusion, and Depression Profile of Mood States-Short Form (POMS) scales. The association of prayer and Depression was fully mediated by trust-based beliefs; associations with Anxiety and Confusion were partially mediated. Further the interaction of prayer frequency by stress was association with Anxiety
Static corrections from shallow-reflection surveys
Shallow seismic reflection surveys can assist in determination of velocity and/or thickness variations in nearsurface layers. Static corrections to seismic reflection data compensate for velocity and thickness variations within the "weathered zone." An uncompensated weathered-layer thickness variation on the order of 1 m across the length of a geophone array can distort the spectrum of the signal and result in aberrations on final stacked data. P-wave velocities in areas where the weathered zone is composed of unconsolidated materials can be substantially less than the velocity of sound in air. Weathered-layer thickness variation of 1 m in these low-velocity materials could result in a static anomaly in excess of 3 ms. Shallow-reflection data from the Texas panhandle illustrate a real geologic situation with sufficient variability in the near surface to significantly affect seismic signal reflected from depths commonly targeted by conventional reflection surveys. Synthetic data approximating a conventional reflection survey combined with a weathered-layer model generated from shallow-reflection data show the possible dramatic static effects of alluvium. Shallow high-resolution reflection surveys can be used both to determine the severity of intra-array statics and to assist in the design of a filter to remove much of the distortion such statics cause on deeper reflection data. The static effects of unconsolidated materials can be even more dramatic on S-wave reflection surveys than on comparable P-wave surveys
Status of Muon Collider Research and Development and Future Plans
The status of the research on muon colliders is discussed and plans are
outlined for future theoretical and experimental studies. Besides continued
work on the parameters of a 3-4 and 0.5 TeV center-of-mass (CoM) energy
collider, many studies are now concentrating on a machine near 0.1 TeV (CoM)
that could be a factory for the s-channel production of Higgs particles. We
discuss the research on the various components in such muon colliders, starting
from the proton accelerator needed to generate pions from a heavy-Z target and
proceeding through the phase rotation and decay ()
channel, muon cooling, acceleration, storage in a collider ring and the
collider detector. We also present theoretical and experimental R & D plans for
the next several years that should lead to a better understanding of the design
and feasibility issues for all of the components. This report is an update of
the progress on the R & D since the Feasibility Study of Muon Colliders

A two-step mechanism for epigenetic specification of centromere identity and function
The basic determinant of chromosome inheritance, the centromere, is specified in many eukaryotes by an epigenetic mark. Using gene targeting in human cells and fission yeast, chromatin containing the centromere-specific histone H3 variant CENP-A is demonstrated to be the epigenetic mark that acts through a two-step mechanism to identify, maintain and propagate centromere function indefinitely. Initially, centromere position is replicated and maintained by chromatin assembled with the centromere-targeting domain (CATD) of CENP-A substituted into H3. Subsequently, nucleation of kinetochore assembly onto CATD-containing chromatin is shown to require either the amino- or carboxy-terminal tail of CENP-A for recruitment of inner kinetochore proteins, including stabilizing CENP-B binding to human centromeres or direct recruitment of CENP-C, respectively.National Institutes of Health grant: (GM 074150); Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research; European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) long-term fellowship

Online Health Check for Reducing Alcohol Intake among Employees:A Feasibility Study in Six Workplaces across England
BACKGROUND: Most hazardous and harmful drinkers are of working age and do not seek help with their drinking. Occupational health services are uniquely placed to universally screen employees across the range of socioeconomic and ethnic groups. The aim was to explore the feasibility and acceptability of offering electronic screening and brief intervention for alcohol misuse in the context of a health check in six different workplace settings. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Employees were recruited from six workplaces across England, including three local authorities, one university, one hospital and one petro-chemical company. A total of 1,254 (8%) employees completed the health check and received personalised feedback on their alcohol intake, alongside feedback on smoking, fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity. Most participants were female (65%) and of 'White British' ethnicity (94%), with a mean age of 43 years (SD 11). Participants were mostly in Intermediate occupations (58%), followed by Higher managerial / professional (39%) and Routine and manual occupations (2%). A quarter of participants (25%) were drinking at hazardous levels (33% male, 21% female), which decreased with age. Sixty-four percent (n=797) of participants completed online follow-up at three months. Most participants were supportive of workplaces offering employees an online health check (95%), their preferred format was online (91%) and many were confident of the confidentiality of their responses (60%). Whilst the feedback reminded most participants of things they already knew (75%), some were reportedly motivated to change their behaviour (13%). CONCLUSIONS: Online health screening and personalised feedback appears feasible and acceptable, but challenges include low participation rates, potentially attracting 'worried well' employees rather than those at greatest health risk, and less acceptance of the approach among older employees and those from ethnic minority backgrounds and routine or manual occupations
