Spatio-temporal Signatures of Elasto-inertial Turbulence in Viscoelastic Planar Jets
The interplay between viscoelasticity and inertia in dilute polymer solutions
at high deformation rates can result in inertio-elastic instabilities. The
nonlinear evolution of these instabilities generates a state of turbulence with
significantly different spatio-temporal features compared to Newtonian
turbulence, termed elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT). We explore EIT by studying
the dynamics of a submerged planar jet of a dilute aqueous polymer solution
injected into a quiescent tank of water using a combination of schlieren
imaging and laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV). We show how fluid elasticity has a
nonmonotonic effect on the jet stability depending on its magnitude, creating
two distinct regimes in which elastic effects can either destabilize or
stabilize the jet. In agreement with linear stability analyses of viscoelastic
jets, an inertio-elastic shear-layer instability emerges near the edge of the
jet for small levels of elasticity, independent of bulk undulations in the
fluid column. The growth of this disturbance mode destabilizes the flow,
resulting in a turbulence transition at lower Reynolds numbers and closer to
the nozzle compared to the conditions required for the transition to turbulence
in a Newtonian jet. Increasing the fluid elasticity merges the shear-layer
instability into a bulk instability of the jet column. In this regime, elastic
tensile stresses generated in the shear layer act as an "elastic membrane'"
that partially stabilizes the flow, retarding the transition to turbulence to
higher levels of inertia and greater distances from the nozzle. In the fully
turbulent state far from the nozzle, planar viscoelastic jets exhibit unique
spatio-temporal features associated with EIT. The time-averaged angle of jet
spreading, an Eulerian measure of the degree of entrainment, and the centerline
velocity of the jets both evolve self-similarly with distance from the nozzle.
LDV measurements of the velocity fluctuations at the jet centerline reveal a
frequency spectrum characterized by a power-law exponent, different from
the well-known power-law exponent characteristic of Newtonian
turbulence. We show that the higher spectral energy of long wavelength modes in
the EIT state results in coherent structures that are elongated in the
streamwise direction, consistent with the suppression of streamwise vortices by
elastic stresses
CP Violation in \tau ->\nu\pi K_S and D->\pi K_S: The Importance of K_S-K_L Interference
The -factories have measured CP asymmetries in the and
modes. The state is identified by its decay to two pions at
a time that is close to the lifetime. Within the Standard Model and many
of its extensions, the asymmetries in these modes come from CP violation in
mixing. We emphasize that the interference between the
amplitudes of intermediate and is as important as the pure
amplitude. Consequently, the measured asymmetries depend on the times over
which the relevant decay rates are integrated and on features of the
experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays at Belle
We report on a search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays using
a data sample of 699 fb^{-1} collected in the Belle experiment at the KEKB
electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in
four bins of the invariant mass of the K^0_S pi system and found to be
compatible with zero with a precision of O(10^{-3}) in each mass bin. Limits
for the CP violation parameter Im(eta_S) are given at a 90 % confidence level.
These limits are |Im(eta_S)|<0.026 or better, depending on the parameterization
used to describe the hadronic form factors and improve upon previous limits by
one order of magnitude
Measurements of Charmless Hadronic b->s Penguin Decays in the pi+pi-K+pi- Final State and First Observation of B0 -> rho0K+pi-
We report measurements of charmless hadronic B^0 decays into the pi+pi-K+pi+
final state. The analysis uses a sample of 657x10^6 BBbar pairs collected with
the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the Y(4S)
resonance. The decay B^0 -> rho0 Kpi is observed for the first time; the
significance is 5.0sigma and the corresponding partial branching fraction for
M_Kpi in (0.75,1.20) GeV/c^2 is [2.8 +- 0.5(stat) +-0.5(syst)] x 10^{-6}. We
also obtain the first evidence for B^0 -> f0Kpi with 3.5sigma significance and
for B^0 -> pi+pi-K*0 with 4.5sigma significance. For the two-body decays B^0 ->
rho0K*0 and B^0 -> f0K*0, the significances are 2.7sigma and 2.5sigma,
respectively, and the upper limits on the branching fractions are 3.4x10^{-6}
and 2.2x10^{-6} at 90% confidence level.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. accepted by PRD(RC
Observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- using e+e- collisions and a determination of the Bs-Bsbar width difference \Delta\Gamma_s
We have made the first observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 23.6 fb-1
of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance.
The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) =
(1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) =
(2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) =
(3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) =
(6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to
CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio
\Delta\Gamma_s/cos(\phi), where \Delta\Gamma_s is the difference in widths
between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and \phi is a CP-violating weak
phase. Taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain
\Delta\Gamma_s/\Gamma_s =
0.147^{+0.036}_{-0.030}(stat.)^{+0.044}_{-0.042}(syst.), where \Gamma_s is the
mean decay width.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. v2: text added for clarification,

Observation of B+ -> Dbar*0 tau+ nu_tau and Evidence for B+ -> Dbar^0 tau+ nu_tau at Belle
We present measurements of B+ -> Dbar*0 tau+ nu_tau and B+ -> Dbar^0 tau+
nu_tau decays in a data sample of 657 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the
Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find
446^{+58}_{-56} events of the decay B+ -> Dbar*0 tau+ nu_tau with a
significance of 8.1 standard deviations, and 146^{+42}_{-41} events of the
decay B+ -> Dbar0 tau+ nu_tau with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.
The latter signal provides the first evidence for this decay mode. The measured
branching fractions are B(B+ -> Dbar*0 tau+ nu_tau)=(2.12^{+0.28}_{-0.27}
(stat) +- 0.29 (syst)) % and B(B+ -> Dbar0 tau+ nu_tau)=(0.77 +- 0.22 (stat) +-
0.12 (syst)) %.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement Of |V_ub| From Inclusive Charmless Semileptonic B Decays
We present the partial branching fraction for inclusive charmless
semileptonic B decays and the corresponding value of the CKM matrix element
|Vub|, using a multivariate analysis method to access ~90% of the B -> Xu l nu
phase space. This approach dramatically reduces the theoretical uncertainties
from the b-quark mass and non-perturbative QCD compared to all previous
inclusive measurements. The results are based on a sample of 657 million B
-Bbar pairs collected with the Belle detector. We find that Delta BR(B -> Xu l
nu; p^*B_l>1.0 GeV/c=1.963 x (1 +/- 0.088(stat.) +/- 0.081(sys.)) x 10^-3.
Corresponding values of |Vub| are extracted using several theoretical
calculations.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables. Published in PR
Evidence for a new resonance and search for the Y(4140) in
The process \gamma \gamma \to \phi \jpsi is measured for \phi \jpsi
masses between threshold and 5 GeV/, using a data sample of 825
fb collected with the Belle detector. A narrow peak of
events, with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations
including systematic uncertainty, is observed. The mass and natural width of
the structure (named X(4350)) are measured to be

, respectively. The
product of its two-photon decay width and branching fraction to \phi\jpsi is

for . No
signal for the Y(4140)\to \phi \jpsi structure reported by the CDF
Collaboration in B\to K^+ \phi \jpsi decays is observed, and limits of
\Gamma_{\gamma \gamma}(Y(4140)) \BR(Y(4140)\to\phi \jpsi)<41 \hbox{eV} for
or for are determined at the 90% C.L. This
disfavors the scenario in which the Y(4140) is a molecule.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, publication in Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 112004, 201
Measurement of CP violating asymmetries in B^0 -> K^+K^- K^0_S decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach
We report a measurement of violating asymmetries in decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach. This analysis
is based on a data sample of pairs accumulated
at the resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB
asymmetric-energy collider. As the result of an unbinned maximum
likelihood fit to the selected candidates, the mixing-induced and direct
violation parameters, and are obtained for
, and other decays. We find four solutions that describe the data. There are

2.6 \pm 1.4)^{\circ}; \phi_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to \phi(1020) K^0_S) & = & (26.2 \pm
8.8 \pm 2.7 \pm 1.2)^{\circ};\\ \phi_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to \phi(1020) K^0_S) & = &

\phi(1020) K^0_S) & = & (24.3 \pm 8.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 5.2)^{\circ}.{eqnarray*}\ The
values for the violating phase in are similar
but other properties of the Dalitz plot are quite different for the four
solutions. These four solutions have consistent values for
all three meson decay channels and none of them deviates significantly from
the values measured in decays with the currently
available statistics. In addition, we find no significant direct
violation.Comment: submitted to PR
