    Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins

    Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins is generally considered to be the one employment decision of the 1988-89 Term which is favorable to plaintiffs. The case provides helpful authority to employees claiming discrimination in pretext cases. In mixed-motive cases, the Court ruled the burden of persuasion shifts from employee to employer. This article focuses on the potential effect of the decision on subsequent employment discrimination cases. The first section is comprised of a general overview of the principles stated in Price Waterhouse that will be important to future plaintiffs. The second section discusses the unanswered questions left by the Price Waterhouse analysis; and the final section illustrates, by reference to the case on remand, the nature of the burden once it has shifted

    Why Girls? The Importance of Developing Gender-Specific Health Promotion Programs for Adolescent Girls

    Adolescence is a time when many girls begin to develop unhealthy behaviors that can affect myriad short- and long-term health outcomes across their lifespan.2There is evidence that smoking, physical activity, and diet are habituated during adolescence, and some physiologic processes of adolescence, such as peak bone mass development, have direct effects on future health.3-4 Establishing healthy practices, beliefs and knowledge among adolescent girls will decrease morbidity and mortality among adult women and potentially affect the health of men and children through women’s role as healthcare agents. This paper provides a brief review of lifestyle health behaviors among women and girls and argues for the importance of developing gender-specific health promotion programs. The paper focuses around three behaviors: substance use, diet and physical activity. We chose these behaviors because they are commonly targeted in school- and community-based programs and are most often implemented in the co-educational settings that de-emphasize gender. Many other health behaviors also affect morbidity and mortality, most notably those related to sexual behaviors as well as intentional and unintentional injury. Although some of our conclusions may be relevant to those behaviors as well, our primary focus is on the lifestyle behaviors described below

    Cavity QED with Single Atoms and Photons

    Recent experimental advances in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) have opened new possibilities for control of atom-photon interactions. A laser with "one and the same atom" demonstrates the theory of laser operation pressed to its conceptual limit. The generation of single photons on demand and the realization of cavity QED with well defined atomic numbers N = 0, 1, 2,... both represent important steps toward realizing diverse protocols in quantum information science. Coherent manipulation of the atomic state via Raman transitions provides a new tool in cavity QED for in situ monitoring and control of the atom-cavity system. All of these achievements share a common point of departure: the regime of strong coupling. It is thus interesting to consider briefly the history of the strong coupling criterion in cavity QED and to trace out the path that research has taken in the pursuit of this goal

    Enhanced Spontaneous Emission Into The Mode Of A Cavity QED System

    We study the light generated by spontaneous emission into a mode of a cavity QED system under weak excitation of the orthogonally polarized mode. Operating in the intermediate regime of cavity QED with comparable coherent and decoherent coupling constants, we find an enhancement of the emission into the undriven cavity mode by more than a factor of 18.5 over that expected by the solid angle subtended by the mode. A model that incorporates three atomic levels and two polarization modes quantitatively explains the observations.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, to appear in May 2007 Optics Letter

    The focus of this session presentation at the 2020 IU School of Medicine Education Day is on how the School is leveraging its regional campus model. The School is the nation’s largest by enrollment, with nine campuses, eight of which are considered regional campuses. After a review of various regional campus models, an example of scholarship that reports on how IU School of Medicine regional campus students perform in the Match compared to main (Indianapolis) campus students is shared. The session presentation also examines the unique way IU School of Medicine is leveraging a Scholarly Concentrations Program for educational enhancement, reputational focus for regional campuses, deeper community engagement, and increased student and faculty scholarship

    Observation of the Vacuum-Rabi Spectrum for One Trapped Atom

    The transmission spectrum for one atom strongly coupled to the field of a high-finesse optical resonator is observed to exhibit a clearly resolved vacuum-Rabi splitting characteristic of the normal modes in the eigenvalue spectrum of the atom-cavity system. A new Raman scheme for cooling atomic motion along the cavity axis enables a complete spectrum to be recorded for an individual atom trapped within the cavity mode, in contrast to all previous measurements in cavity QED that have required averaging over many atoms.Comment: 5 pages with 4 figure
