International Coercion, Emulation and Policy Diffusion: Market-Oriented Infrastructure Reforms, 1977-1999
Why do some countries adopt market-oriented reforms such as deregulation, privatization and liberalization of competition in their infrastructure industries while others do not? Why did the pace of adoption accelerate in the 1990s? Building on neo-institutional theory in sociology, we argue that the domestic adoption of market-oriented reforms is strongly influenced by international pressures of coercion and emulation. We find robust support for these arguments with an event-history analysis of the determinants of reform in the telecommunications and electricity sectors of as many as 205 countries and territories between 1977 and 1999. Our results also suggest that the coercive effect of multilateral lending from the IMF, the World Bank or Regional Development Banks is increasing over time, a finding that is consistent with anecdotal evidence that multilateral organizations have broadened the scope of the “conditionality” terms specifying market-oriented reforms imposed on borrowing countries. Reverberation Mapping Results for Five Seyfert 1 Galaxies
We present the results from a detailed analysis of photometric and
spectrophotometric data on five Seyfert 1 galaxies observed as a part of a
recent reverberation mapping program. The data were collected at several
observatories over a 140-day span beginning in 2010 August and ending in 2011
January. We obtained high sampling-rate light curves for Mrk 335, Mrk 1501,
3C120, Mrk 6, and PG2130+099, from which we have measured the time lag between
variations in the 5100 Angstrom continuum and the H-beta broad emission line.
We then used these measurements to calculate the mass of the supermassive black
hole at the center of each of these galaxies. Our new measurements
substantially improve previous measurements of MBH and the size of the broad
line-emitting region for four sources and add a measurement for one new object.
Our new measurements are consistent with photoionization physics regulating the

Extensive air showers with TeV-scale quantum gravity
One of the possible consequences of the existence of extra degrees of freedom
beyond the electroweak scale is the increase of neutrino-nucleon cross sections
() beyond Standard Model predictions. At ultra-high energies
this may allow the existence of neutrino-initiated extensive air showers. In
this paper, we examine the most relevant observables of such showers. Our
analysis indicates that the future Pierre Auger Observatory could be

Reverberation Mapping of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 7469
A large reverberation mapping study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 has
yielded emission-line lags for Hbeta 4861 and He II 4686 and a central black
hole mass measurement of about 10 million solar masses, consistent with
previous measurements. A very low level of variability during the monitoring
campaign precluded meeting our original goal of recovering velocity-delay maps
from the data, but with the new Hbeta measurement, NGC 7469 is no longer an
outlier in the relationship between the size of the Hbeta-emitting broad-line
region and the AGN luminosity. It was necessary to detrend the continuum and
Hbeta and He II 4686 line light curves and those from archival UV data for

A Reverberation Lag for The High-Ionization Component of the Broad-Line Region in the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Mrk 335
We present the first results from a detailed analysis of photometric and spectrophotometric data on the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 335, collected over a 120 day span in the fall of 2010. From these data we measure the lag in the He ii λ 4686 broad emission line relative to the optical continuum to be 2.7 °æ 0.6 days and the lag in the Hβλ 4861 broad emission line to be 13.9 °æ 0.9 days. Combined with the line width, the He ii lag yields a black hole mass MBH = (2. 6 °æ 0. 8) °ø 107M . This measurement is consistent with measurements made using the Hβλ 4861 line, suggesting that the He ii emission originates in the same structure as Hβ , but at a much smaller radius. This constitutes the first robust lag measurement for a high-ionization line in an NLS1 galaxy and supports a scenario in which the He ii emission originates from gas in virial motion rather than outflow
Marburg Virus Infection Detected in a Common African Bat
Marburg and Ebola viruses can cause large hemorrhagic fever (HF) outbreaks with high case fatality (80–90%) in human and great apes. Identification of the natural reservoir of these viruses is one of the most important topics in this field and a fundamental key to understanding their natural history. Despite the discovery of this virus family almost 40 years ago, the search for the natural reservoir of these lethal pathogens remains an enigma despite numerous ecological studies. Here, we report the discovery of Marburg virus in a common species of fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) in Gabon as shown by finding virus-specific RNA and IgG antibody in individual bats. These Marburg virus positive bats represent the first naturally infected non-primate animals identified. Furthermore, this is the first report of Marburg virus being present in this area of Africa, thus extending the known range of the virus. These data imply that more areas are at risk for MHF outbreaks than previously realized and correspond well with a recently published report in which three species of fruit bats were demonstrated to be likely reservoirs for Ebola virus
What we talk about when we talk about "global mindset": managerial cognition in multinational corporations
Recent developments in the global economy and in multinational corporations have placed significant emphasis on the cognitive orientations of managers, giving rise to a number of concepts such as “global mindset” that are presumed to be associated with the effective management of multinational corporations (MNCs). This paper reviews the literature on global mindset and clarifies some of the conceptual confusion surrounding the construct. We identify common themes across writers, suggesting that the majority of studies fall into one of three research perspectives: cultural, strategic, and multidimensional. We also identify two constructs from the social sciences that underlie the perspectives found in the literature: cosmopolitanism and cognitive complexity and use these two constructs to develop an integrative theoretical framework of global mindset. We then provide a critical assessment of the field of global mindset and suggest directions for future theoretical and empirical research
Bose-Einstein Correlations of Three Charged Pions in Hadronic Z^0 Decays
Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) of three identical charged pions were
studied in 4 x 10^6 hadronic Z^0 decays recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP.
The genuine three-pion correlations, corrected for the Coulomb effect, were
separated from the known two-pion correlations by a new subtraction procedure.
A significant genuine three-pion BEC enhancement near threshold was observed
having an emitter source radius of r_3 = 0.580 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +/- 0.029
(syst.) fm and a strength of \lambda_3 = 0.504 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.041
(syst.). The Coulomb correction was found to increase the \lambda_3 value by
\~9% and to reduce r_3 by ~6%. The measured \lambda_3 corresponds to a value of
0.707 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.078 (syst.) when one takes into account the
three-pion sample purity. A relation between the two-pion and the three-pion

Governance and Susceptibility in Conflict Resolution: Possibilities Beyond Control
Governmentality analysis offers a nuanced critique of informal Western conflict resolution by arguing that recently emerged alternatives to adversarial court processes both govern subjects and help to constitute rather than challenge formal regulation. However, this analysis neglects possibilities for transforming governance from within conflict resolution that are suggested by Foucault's contention that there are no relations of power without resistances. To explore this lacuna, I theorise and explore the affective and interpersonal nature of governance in mediation through autoethnographic reflection upon mediation practice, and Levina's insights about the relatedness of selves. The paper argues that two qualitatively different mediator capacities - technical ability and susceptibility - operate in concert to effect liberal governance. Occasionally though, difficulties and failures in mediation practice bring these capacities into tension and reveal the limits of governance. By considering these limits in mediation with Aboriginal Australian people, I argue that the susceptibility of mediator selves contains prospects for mitigating and transforming the very operations of power occurring through conflict resolution. This suggests options for expanded critical thinking about power relations operating through informal processes, and for cultivating a susceptible sensibility to mitigate liberal governance and more ethically respond to difference through conflict resolution
