    Nonequilibrium gas-liquid transition in the driven-dissipative photonic lattice

    We study the nonequilibrium steady state of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model with Kerr nonlinearity. Employing a mean-field decoupling for the intercavity hopping JJ, we find that the steep crossover between low and high photon-density states inherited from the single cavity transforms into a gas-liquid bistability at large cavity-coupling JJ. We formulate a van der Waals like gas-liquid phenomenology for this nonequilibrium situation and determine the relevant phase diagrams, including a new type of diagram where a lobe-shaped boundary separates smooth crossovers from sharp, hysteretic transitions. Calculating quantum trajectories for a one-dimensional system, we provide insights into the microscopic origin of the bistability.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Material (2 pages, 2 figures

    Plant communities of Italy. The vegetation prodrome

    The Vegetation Prodrome of Italy was promoted in 2012 by the Italian "Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection", in collaboration with the "Italian Society of Botany", to provide a comprehensive and systematic catalogue and description of Italian plant communities. The Prodrome that is presented in this paper is the first full organic synthesis of the vegetation of Italy at the alliance syntaxonomic level. It fulfils several needs, the main one being a unified and comprehensive national framework that may make an important contribution to the definition of the European Vegetation Prodrome. Syntaxonomy, as well as taxonomy, is sometimes based on considerations that may in part diverge: several authors tend to favour models that are divisive or aggregative to a greater or lesser extent in terms of flora, biogeography and ecology. These different points of view stimulate the scientific debate and allow the adoption of a framework that is more widely supported. The Prodrome includes 75 classes, 2 subclasses, 175 orders, 6 suborders and 393 alliances. The classes were grouped into nine broad categories according to structural, physiognomic and synecological elements rather than to syntaxonomic criteria. The rank, full valid name, any synonymies and incorrect names are provided for each syntaxon. The short declaration highlights the physiognomy, synecology, syndynamics and distribution of the plant communities that belong to the syntaxon. The Prodrome of the Italian Vegetation is linked to the European Strategy for Biodiversity, the European Habitats Directive and the European Working Groups related to the ecosystems and their services. In addition to basic applications, the Prodrome can be used as a framework for scientific research related to the investigation of the relationships between plant communities and the environmental factors that influence their composition and distribution

    Non-equilibrium dynamics of coupled qubit-cavity arrays

    We study the coherence and fluorescence properties of the coherently pumped and dissipative Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model describing polaritons in a coupled-cavity array. At weak hopping we find strong signatures of photon blockade similar to single-cavity systems. At strong hopping the state of the photons in the array depends on its size. While the photon blockade persists in a dimer consisting of two coupled cavities, a coherent state forms on an extended lattice, which can be described in terms of a semi-classical model

    Diagnostic accuracy of myocardial perfusion imaging with czt technology. Systemic review and meta-analysis of comparison with invasive coronary angiography

    OBJECTIVES: This study sought to summarize the evidence on stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) using cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) technology for the diagnosis of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). The CZT cameras are newly introduced, and comparative data with the conventional Anger technology (Anger-MPI) are lacking. BACKGROUND: The diagnostic accuracy of Anger-MPI for detection of angiographically significant CAD is well established; however, less evidence is available on the diagnostic accuracy of CZT-MPI. METHODS: Clinical studies comparing CZT-MPI and invasive coronary angiography were systematically searched and abstracted. Calculations of diagnostic accuracy, including sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, and diagnostic odds ratio, were obtained with fixed and random effects, reporting point estimates and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Based on our search, a total of 16 studies (N = 2,092) were included. The sensitivity of CZT-MPI was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.78 to 0.89), whereas the specificity of 0.69 (95% CI: 0.62 to 0.76) was significantly reduced. The positive likelihood ratio was 2.73 (95% CI: 2.21 to 3.39), the negative likelihood ratio was 0.24 (95% CI: 0.17 to 0.31), and the diagnostic odds ratio was 11.93 (95% CI: 7.84 to 17.42). At subgroup and meta-regression analyses, the diagnostic accuracy between D-SPECT and Discovery cameras was similar (p = 0.711) and not impacted upon by smaller sample size studies (p = 0.573). CONCLUSIONS: CZT-MPI has satisfactory sensitivity for angiographically significant CAD, but its suboptimal specificity warrants further development and research

    Modeling environmental responses of plantassociations by fuzzy set theory

    A method for studying the response of vegetation to environmental gradients, based on the community niche and fuzzy set theory, is presented. The approach is illustrated using an example from perennial halophilous vegetation along the Northern Adriatic coast of Italy. Compatibility curves are obtained by fuzzy set theoretical methods, and are used tomodel the response functions of plant associations to environmental gradients, including soil and ground water salinity, soil pH, soil and ground water temperature, percentage of sand, and variations in the ground water level. The compatibility curves summarize the similarity of a given plant community, with a particular value of an environmental variable, to the species combination of a given plant association. Compatibility curves offer an alternative approach to non-linear regression and best fit analyses normally used to model single species responses to environmental gradients. The approach is particularly useful given there is no singlemechanisticmodel that can capture the exact shape of the functional response along environmental gradients, and given that environmental data are commonly affected by high levels of noise

    New experimental limits on neutron - mirror neutron oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic field

    Present probes do not exclude that the neutron (nn) oscillation into mirror neutron (nn'), a sterile state exactly degenerate in mass with the neutron, can be a very fast process, in fact faster than the neutron decay itself. This process is sensitive to the magnetic field. Namely, if the mirror magnetic field B\vec{B}' exists at the Earth, nnn-n' oscillation probability can be suppressed or resonantly amplified by the applied magnetic field B\vec{B}, depending on its strength and on the angle β\beta between B\vec{B} and B\vec{B}'. We present the results of ultra-cold neutron storage measurements aiming to check the anomalies observed in previous experiments which could be a signal for nnn-n' oscillation in the presence of mirror magnetic field B0.1B'\sim 0.1~G. Analyzing the experimental data on neutron loses, we obtain a new lower limit on nnn-n' oscillation time τnn>17\tau_{nn'} > 17 s (95 % C.L.) for any BB' between 0.08 and 0.17 G, and τnn/cosβ>27\tau_{nn'}/\sqrt{\cos\beta} > 27 s (95 % C.L.) for any BB' in the interval (0.06÷0.250.06\div0.25) G

    Veneto's successful lesson for a world shocked by COVID-19: think globally and act locally

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV- 2) infection has wreaked havoc globally, with an ominous morbidity and mortality impact.1,2 Indeed, croronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) still represents a formidable challenge for pathophysiology, prognostication, management, and rehabilitation. This holds even truer given the conflicting reports accrued so far for several purportedly effective interventions.1,3,4 Although substantial steps have been accomplished in terms of diagnostic yield, even recognizing early infection is still quite challenging. Each country has addressed COVID-19 in its own way, with variable results. Perusing data on China’s experience with the virus brings forward several questions in terms of completeness and truthfulness of reporting, with substantial skepticism despite several authoritative reports.5 For instance, to date, China has reported fewer COVID-19-related deaths than many smaller countries where COVID-19 spread much later (eg, The Netherlands). Countries and healthcare systems that have acted with a global vision, but also with a firm and proactive local hand, have seen the best results in terms of deaths and system derangement. Conversely, countries with a loose policy (either initially such as the United Kingdom or throughout such as Sweden) have already paid an enormous toll of life and pain, and hypothetically will continue to do so
