SummaryIntroductionOssifying fibroma of the jaw is a benign tumorous disease, somewhat rare and aggressive. It frequently targets the mandible, but seldom the maxillary.Case studyThe present study reports the first case of left maxillary sinus fibroma treated at the Kara Teaching Hospital in North Togo. It occurred in a 29-year-old patient who experienced slow-growing tumefaction of the left maxillary sinus, resulting in deformation of the left side of the face in the maxillary region and ipsilateral nasal obstruction. Orthopantomography showed a displacement of teeth 21, 22, and 23 with an abnormal degree of opacity at the dental roots. The CT scan of the nose and sinuses revealed a tumorous lesion of expanding bony density increasing in volume at the outer wall of the left maxillary sinus, of regular shape that contained microscopic calcifications, extending into the ipsilateral orbital floor and pushing the surrounding soft tissues forward without invading them. The histopathological examination of the tumor confirmed the diagnosis of ossifying fibroma.DiscussionOssifying fibroma or fibrous osteoma is a rare and benign lesion developing insidiously with a polymorphous aspect. Of unknown etiology, most frequently located in the mandible, it is differentiated from other types of fibroma in its clinical, radiological, and histological aspects. However, only examination of the gross specimen can provide the final diagnosis. Treatment requires surgery.ConclusionSurgical treatment entailed the complete macroscopic enucleoresection. Recovery has been favorable at 2 years of follow-up

Complementary approaches to understanding the plant circadian clock

Circadian clocks are oscillatory genetic networks that help organisms adapt to the 24-hour day/night cycle. The clock of the green alga Ostreococcus tauri is the simplest plant clock discovered so far. Its many advantages as an experimental system facilitate the testing of computational predictions. We present a model of the Ostreococcus clock in the stochastic process algebra Bio-PEPA and exploit its mapping to different analysis techniques, such as ordinary differential equations, stochastic simulation algorithms and model-checking. The small number of molecules reported for this system tests the limits of the continuous approximation underlying differential equations. We investigate the difference between continuous-deterministic and discrete-stochastic approaches. Stochastic simulation and model-checking allow us to formulate new hypotheses on the system behaviour, such as the presence of self-sustained oscillations in single cells under constant light conditions. We investigate how to model the timing of dawn and dusk in the context of model-checking, which we use to compute how the probability distributions of key biochemical species change over time. These show that the relative variation in expression level is smallest at the time of peak expression, making peak time an optimal experimental phase marker. Building on these analyses, we use approaches from evolutionary systems biology to investigate how changes in the rate of mRNA degradation impacts the phase of a key protein likely to affect fitness. We explore how robust this circadian clock is towards such potential mutational changes in its underlying biochemistry. Our work shows that multiple approaches lead to a more complete understanding of the clock

Novel P53 mutations detected by FAMA in colorectal cancers

Background: The aim of the study was to identify p53 gene mutations by FAMA (fluorescence-assisted mismatch analysis) in colorectal cancers. Patients and methods: Analytical scanning of the p53 gene (exons 5\u20139) was performed in colon cancer samples from 44 consecutive patients by FAMA. FAMA is a semiautomatic scanning approach based on the chemical cleavage of the mismatch in fluorescently labeled heteroduplex DNA, obtained from the combination of a normal and a mutated allele. FAMA has already shown optimal levels of diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity in detecting gene mutations (nucleotide substitutions, insertions/deletions) both at the germline and somatic level. The peculiar feature of FAMA is its ability to detect and localize mutations, by a redundant pattern of signals due to fluorescent DNA fragments generated by chemical cleavage. Moreover, previous data have demonstrated that normal contaminating DNA from stromal cells in the sample does not affect the sensitivity of the procedure, leading to the identification of the mutation even when the ratio mutant/normal allele is 10%. Results: Eighteen mutations (12 missense, one nonsense, two deletions, three nucleotide substitutions at the level of the splice-junctions) and two polymorphisms were detected by FAMA in 17 patients (39%) and then confirmed by automated sequence analysis. Six of 18 mutations (33%) were not previously reported for colon cancer samples and two of 18 lesions (11%) were identified as novel p53 mutations. Conclusions: Analytical scanning of the p53 gene by FAMA in DNA from colon cancer samples provides a sensitive, accurate and specific diagnostic procedure for routine clinical application

Open Access JournalInformation on population structure and genetic diversity of germplasm in a breeding programme is useful because it enhances judicious utilisation of genetic resources to achieve breeding objectives. Seventy early maturing provitamin A (PVA) quality protein maize (QPM) inbreds developed by the IITA- maize improvement programme were genotyped using 8171 DArTseq markers. Furthermore, 96 hybrids derived from 24 selected inbreds plus four checks were evaluated under low-N and optimal environments in Nigeria during 2016 and 2017. Genotypic and phenotypic data of inbreds and hybrids respectively, were analysed to (i) assess the level of genetic dissimilarities and population structure of the inbreds, and (ii) investigate the grain yield performance of derived hybrids under low-N, optimal and across environments

Open Access Journal; Published online: 23 Apr 2021Genetic gain studies in a breeding program are very important for measuring the efficiency of the program over a specific period. It also provides breeders with an understanding of the outcomes of the huge investments committed to the breeding programs. This study sought to (i) estimate the gains in grain yield under drought and rainfed conditions and (ii) identify high-yielding and stable hybrids developed in the last two decades under drought and rainfed conditions. Sixty extra-early maturing hybrids developed by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, during three breeding periods: (2008–2010, 2011–2013, and 2014–2016) were assessed under managed drought and rainfed conditions across 14 environments in Nigeria to estimate the genetic gains in grain yield using linear regression analysis. Considerably high genetic gains (4.1%) per year for grain yield was obtained for the extra-early maturing hybrids under drought environments. Six of the top ten hybrids identified were from period 3, an indication of the high genetic gains from selection in period 3. Additionally, two of the top six period 3 hybrids (TZEEI 29 × TZEEI 13) × TZEEI 64 and TZdEEI 64 × TZEEI 54 were found to be the best yielding and most stable across the 14 test environments and were highly recommended for extensive evaluations to warrant their commercialization in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)
