    Designing an IT-Based System for Optimizing Lung Cancer Management

    Digital health offers lung cancer patients to improve their health status while allowing patients, providers, and administrators to coordinate data and care at individual and community levels. While technology improvements provide lung cancer patients and healthcare providers with a valuable new tool for disease management, these are yet to be widely accepted. In particular, we aim to: (1) develop a Machine Learning (ML)-based framework for data collection from active online lung cancer forums and other parameters for patients, providers and their organizations, (2) build an AI-based model to develop a cancer ontology for exploring different factors and patients’ emotions associated to lung cancer management, (3) Design a mHealth app to set up a support system in terms of providing patients with information and social support, and ML models-based treatment recommendation system. The IT-based support system will provide the best and most specific treatment plan and recommendation system for lung cancer management

    Sub-sampling Approach for Unconstrained Arabic Scene Text Analysis by Implicit Segmentation based Deep Learning Classifier

    The text extraction from the natural scene image is still a cumbersome task to perform. This paper presents a novel contribution and suggests the solution for cursive scene text analysis notably recognition of Arabic scene text appeared in the unconstrained environment. The hierarchical sub-sampling technique is adapted to investigate the potential through sub-sampling the window size of the given scene text sample. The deep learning architecture is presented by considering the complexity of the Arabic script. The conducted experiments present 96.81% accuracy at the character level. The comparison of the Arabic scene text with handwritten and printed data is outlined as well

    Correlation of serum calcium with severity of acute ischaemic stroke

    Stroke results in the death of around 6.5 million people annually with a majority of these occurring in developing countries. Serum calcium has been hypothesised to play a significant role in causing ischaemic stroke. This retrospective observational study was conducted to determine the correlation, if any, between serum calcium and the severity of acute ischaemic stroke in our population. Two hundred and seventy-nine patients admitted with acute ischaemic stroke were enrolled in the study. Of the 279 patients 162 (58%) were male and mean age was 62.4 ± 3.8 years. Characteristics of stroke patients were compared with stroke severity. Mean albumin corrected serum calcium and Scandinavian stroke severity score was 9.1 (± 5.6) and 33.67 (± 15.2), respectively. Hypertension and mean GCS on admission were significantly associated with increased stroke severity score. However, no correlation was observed between serum calcium and severity of acute ischaemic stroke

    Association of vitamin D deficiency and disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus patients: Two-year follow-up study

    Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Pakistani systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and the effect of vitamin D deficiency on the severity and outcomes of SLE.Patients and methods: This retrospective study evaluated SLE patients presenting to our hospital between January 2009 and December 2018. A total of 98 patients (13 males, 85 females; mean age 39.8±14.9 years; range, 16 to 73 years) with vitamin D levels available at the time of diagnosis were included in the study. Disease activity was measured using SLE disease activity score at the time of diagnosis and at the two-year mark.Results: Sixty-five patients were deficient in Vitamin D and out of those 46 were severely deficient. The severe disease group had more patients with vitamin D deficiency at both visits (43/78 and 33/46) while patients in remission all had normal vitamin D (12/12 and 14/14) (p≤0.001).Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is common in SLE patients and also significantly associated with increased disease activity at the time of diagnosis and at the two-year mark. We hope this study becomes a platform for the global medical community to come together and implement early screening and monitoring of vitamin D levels and to determine the optimal level of supplementation for prevention of poor outcomes in SLE

    Auxilio: A Sensor-Based Wireless Head-Mounted Mouse for People with Upper Limb Disability

    Upper limb disability may be caused either due to accidents, neurological disorders, or even birth defects, imposing limitations and restrictions on the interaction with a computer for the concerned individuals using a generic optical mouse. Our work proposes the design and development of a working prototype of a sensor-based wireless head-mounted Assistive Mouse Controller (AMC), Auxilio, facilitating interaction with a computer for people with upper limb disability. Combining commercially available, low-cost motion and infrared sensors, Auxilio solely utilizes head and cheek movements for mouse control. Its performance has been juxtaposed with that of a generic optical mouse in different pointing tasks as well as in typing tasks, using a virtual keyboard. Furthermore, our work also analyzes the usability of Auxilio, featuring the System Usability Scale. The results of different experiments reveal the practicality and effectiveness of Auxilio as a head-mounted AMC for empowering the upper limb disabled community.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, 5 table

    Design and implementation of a quadruped amphibious robot using duck feet

    Roaming complexity in terrains and unexpected environments pose significant difficulties in robotic exploration of an area. In a broader sense, robots have to face two common tasks during exploration, namely, walking on the drylands and swimming through the water. This research aims to design and develop an amphibious robot, which incorporates a webbed duck feet design to walk on different terrains, swim in the water, and tackle obstructions on its way. The designed robot is compact, easy to use, and also has the abilities to work autonomously. Such a mechanism is implemented by designing a novel robotic webbed foot consisting of two hinged plates. Because of the design, the webbed feet are able to open and close with the help of water pressure. Klann linkages have been used to convert rotational motion to walking and swimming for the animal’s gait. Because of its amphibian nature, the designed robot can be used for exploring tight caves, closed spaces, and moving on uneven challenging terrains such as sand, mud, or water. It is envisaged that the proposed design will be appreciated in the industry to design amphibious robots in the near future

    Wind Power Integration with Smart Grid and Storage System: Prospects and Limitations

    Wind power generation is playing a pivotal role in adopting renewable energy sources in many countries. Over the past decades, we have seen steady growth in wind power generation throughout the world. This article aims to summarize the operation, conversion and integration of the wind power with conventional grid and local microgrids so that it can be a one-stop reference for early career researchers. The study is carried out primarily based on the horizontal axis wind turbine and the vertical axis wind turbine. Afterward, the types and methods of storing this electric power generated are discussed elaborately. On top of that, this paper summarizes the ways of connecting the wind farms with conventional grid and microgrid to portray a clear picture of existing technologies. Section-wise, the prospects and limitations are discussed and opportunities for future technologies are highlighted. It is envisaged that, this paper will help researchers and engineering professionals to grasp the fundamental concepts related to wind power generation concisely and effectively
