S-duality and the prepotential in N=2* theories (I): the ADE algebras
The prepotential of N=2* supersymmetric theories with unitary gauge groups in
an Omega-background satisfies a modular anomaly equation that can be
recursively solved order by order in an expansion for small mass. By requiring
that S-duality acts on the prepotential as a Fourier transform we generalise
this result to N=2* theories with gauge algebras of the D and E type and show
that their prepotentials can be written in terms of quasi-modular forms of
SL(2,Z). The results are checked against microscopic multi-instanton calculus
based on localization for the A and D series and reproduce the known
1-instanton prepotential of the pure N=2 theories for any gauge group of ADE
type. Our results can also be used to obtain the multi-instanton terms in the
exceptional theories for which the microscopic instanton calculus and the ADHM
construction are not available.Comment: 33 pages, LaTeX2e, added references, version to be published in JHE
Deformation of Super Yang-Mills Theories in R-R 3-form Background
We study deformation of N=2 and N=4 super Yang-Mills theories, which are
obtained as the low-energy effective theories on the (fractional) D3-branes in
the presence of constant Ramond-Ramond 3-form background. We calculate the
Lagrangian at the second order in the deformation parameter from open string
disk amplitudes. In N=4 case we find that all supersymmetries are broken for
generic deformation parameter but part of supersymmetries are unbroken for
special case. We also find that classical vacua admit fuzzy sphere
configuration. In N=2 case we determine the deformed supersymmetries. We
rewrite the deformed Lagrangians in terms of N=1 superspace, where the
deformation is interpreted as that of coupling constants.Comment: v2: reference added, v3: published version in JHE
Ramond-Ramond (boundary) states
The description of D-branes as boundary states for type II string theories
(in the covariant formulation) requires particular care in the R-R sector. Also
the vertices for R-R potentials that can couple to D-branes need a careful
handling. As an illustration of this, the example of the D0-D8 system is
reviewed, where a ``microscopic'' description of the interaction via exchange
of R-R potentials becomes possible.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, no figures. Talk presented at the 2nd Conference on

Vector Supersymmetry of 2D Yang-Mills Theory
The vector supersymmetry of the 2D topological BF model is extended to 2D
Yang-Mills. The consequences of the corresponding Ward identity on the
ultraviolet behavior of the theory are analyzed.Comment: Some references adde
HyperK\"ahler quotients and N=4 gauge theories in D=2
We consider certain N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in D=2 coupled to
quaternionic matter multiplets in a minimal way. These theories admit as
effective theories sigma-models on non-trivial HyperK\"ahler manifolds obtained
as HyperK\"ahler quotients. The example of ALE manifolds is discussed. (Based

June 1994).Comment: 22 pages, Latex, no figure

On the D(-1)/D7-brane systems
We study non-perturbative effects in supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories in
eight dimensions realized by means of D(-1)/D7-brane systems with non-trivial
world-volume fluxes turned on. Using an explicit string construction in terms
of vertex operators, we derive the action for the open strings ending on the
D(-1)-branes and exhibit its BRST structure. The space of vacua for these open
strings is shown to be in correspondence with the moduli space of generalized
ADHM gauge connections which trigger the non-perturbative corrections in the
eight-dimensional theory. These corrections are computed via localization and
turn out to depend on the curved background used to localize the integrals on
the instanton moduli space, and vanish in flat space. Finally, we show that for
specific choices of the background the instanton partition functions reduce to
weighted sums of the solid partitions of the integers.Comment: 43 pages, 1 figure; typos fixed, matches the published versio
Attribute-level Neighbor Hierarchy Construction Using Evolved Pattern-based Knowledge Induction
Neighbor knowledge construction is the foundation for the development of cooperative query answering systems capable of searching for close match or approximate answers when exact match answers are not available. This paper presents a technique for developing neighbor hierarchies at the attribute level. The proposed technique is called the evolved Pattern-based Knowledge Induction (ePKI) technique and allows construction of neighbor hierarchies for nonunique attributes based upon confidences, popularities, and clustering correlations of inferential relationships among attribute values. The technique is applicable for both categorical and numerical (discrete and continuous) attribute values. Attribute value neighbor hierarchies generated by the ePKI technique allow a cooperative query answering system to search for approximate answers by relaxing each individual query condition separately. Consequently, users can search for approximate answers even when the exact match answers do not exist in the database (i.e., searching for existing similar parts as part of the implementation of the concepts of rapid prototyping). Several experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the ePKI in constructing attribute-level neighbor hierarchies. Results indicate that the ePKI technique produces accurate neighbor hierarchies when strong inferential relationships appear among data. © 2006 IEEE
Tachyon Kink on non-BPS Dp-brane in the General Background
This paper is devoted to the study of the tachyon kink on the worldvolume of
a non-BPS Dp-brane that is embedded in general background, including NS-NS two
form B and also general Ramond-Ramond field. We will explicitly show that the
dynamics of the kink is described by the equations of motion that arrise from
the DBI and WZ action for D(p-1)-brane.Comment: 28 page
