    This year the General Editors continued the tradition started last year by creating a feature piece to show our appreciation for the History Department. We selected four professors from the faculty to answer a question about history: what figure/event/idea inspires your interest in history? Reading their responses helped give us insight into the thoughts of these brilliant minds and further help us understand their passion for the subject we all share a common love and interest in.     Solution of Some Integrable One-Dimensional Quantum Systems

    In this paper, we investigate a family of one-dimensional multi-component quantum many-body systems. The interaction is an exchange interaction based on the familiar family of integrable systems which includes the inverse square potential. We show these systems to be integrable, and exploit this integrability to completely determine the spectrum including degeneracy, and thus the thermodynamics. The periodic inverse square case is worked out explicitly. Next, we show that in the limit of strong interaction the "spin" degrees of freedom decouple. Taking this limit for our example, we obtain a complete solution to a lattice system introduced recently by Shastry, and Haldane; our solution reproduces the numerical results. Finally, we emphasize the simple explanation for the high multiplicities found in this model

    Coupling to haloform molecules in intercalated C60?

    For field-effect-doped fullerenes it was reported that the superconducting transition temperature Tc is markedly larger for C60.2CHX_3 (X=Cl, Br) crystals, than for pure C60. Initially this was explained by the expansion of the volume per C60-molecule and the corresponding increase in the density of states at the Fermi level in the intercalated crystals. On closer examination it has, however, turned out to be unlikely that this is the mechanism behind the increase in Tc. An alternative explanation of the enhanced transition temperatures assumes that the conduction electrons not only couple to the vibrational modes of the C60-molecule, but also to the modes of the intercalated molecules. We investigate the possibility of such a coupling. We find that, assuming the ideal bulk structure of the intercalated crystal, both a coupling due to hybridization of the molecular levels, and a coupling via dipole moments should be very small. This suggests that the presence of the gate-oxide in the field-effect-devices strongly affects the structure of the fullerene crystal at the interface.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to be published in PRB (rapid communication

    Conservation laws in the continuum 1/r21/r^2 systems

    We study the conservation laws of both the classical and the quantum mechanical continuum 1/r21/r^2 type systems. For the classical case, we introduce new integrals of motion along the recent ideas of Shastry and Sutherland (SS), supplementing the usual integrals of motion constructed much earlier by Moser. We show by explicit construction that one set of integrals can be related algebraically to the other. The difference of these two sets of integrals then gives rise to yet another complete set of integrals of motion. For the quantum case, we first need to resum the integrals proposed by Calogero, Marchioro and Ragnisco. We give a diagrammatic construction scheme for these new integrals, which are the quantum analogues of the classical traces. Game ini mempunyai tampilan berbentuk dua dimensi dan dimainkan dengan menggunakan Smartphone berbasis Android. Game ini dibuat menggunakan Unity dengan C# sebagai bahasa pemrograman. Pemain harusmenghancurkan base musuh dengan menggambar simbol pada layar untuk mengeluarkan prajurit yang akan mengalahkan monster-monster musuh yang melindungi base musuh. Pengujian dilakukan dengan metode blackbox, alpha testing, dan beta testing melalui survei pada 40 responden. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa fitur menggambar simbol pada game Summoner's Quest membuat gameplaygame ini menjadi unik dan menarik sehingga pemain tertarik untuk bermain lagi

    Pain control in healthcare organizations: Developing effective disease management programs

    Although medicine possesses the knowledge and technology for preventing or relieving most pain, poor pain control is still widespread. Unrelieved pain causes unnecessary suffering and increases health care expenditures. Among the barriers to improving pain control are poor provider education in pain management, misguided beliefs about the inevitability of pain and the dangers of pain medication, provider resistance to changing practice patterns, and administrative resistance to implementing improvements that incur short-term costs but lead to long-term savings. In short, poor pain relief in America\u27s health care institutions is a system issue, and improvement requires a system-wide change. An effective program for improving pain management requires a multidisciplinary team committed to the task, ideally a triad consisting of a physician, a nurse, and a pharmacist. The triad needs administrative support in order to undertake needs assessment, offer provider and patient education, and perform continuous cycles of assessment, intervention, and reassessment of pain management. A strong information management base and an analytic engine are essential so that the team can evaluate outcomes from multiple perspectives (provider, payer, patient). The triad should identify a service area with clear pain problems, demonstrate improvements in this area, and then systematically move to other service areas. Educating providers and patients about pain and its control is essential for bringing about change. Improved pain management is a win-win situation for patients and institutions alike. Patients and families benefit from reduced suffering and improved quality of life, while institutions can offer more cost-effective care to patients

    This article attempts a contrast to the contribution by Hugh Starkey. Rather than his account of the inexorable rise of human rights discourse, and of the implementation of human rights standards, human rights are here presented as always and necessarily scandalous and highly contested. First, I explain why the UK has lagged so far behind its European neighbours in implementing citizenship education. Second, a comparison with France shows that the latest UK reforms bring us up to 1789. Third, the twentieth-century second-generation social and economic rights are still anathema in the UK. Fourth, the failure to come to terms with Empire and especially the slave trade means that the UK’s attitude to third-generation rights, especially the right of peoples to self-determination, is heavily compromised. Taking into account the points I raise, citizenship education in the UK might look very different

    Prototyping a Chatbot for Student Supervision in a Pre-registration Process

    Developing a chatbot becomes a challenging task when it is built from scratch and independent of any Software as a Service (SaaS). Inspired by the idea of freeing lecturers from the burden of answering the same questions repetitively during the pre-registration process, this research has succeeded in building a textbased chatbot system. Further, this research has proved that the combination of keyword spotting technique for the Language Understanding component, Finite-State Transducer (FST) for the Dialogue Management, rulebased keyword matching for language generation, and the system-in-the-loop paradigm for system validation can produce an efficient chatbot. The chatbot efficiency is high enough as its score on Concept Efficiency (CE) reaches 0.946. It shows that users do not need to repeat their utterances several times to be understood. The chatbot performance on recognizing new concepts introduced by users is also more than satisfactory which is presented by its Query Density (QD) score of 0.80

    Changing demographics of rural Extension audiences create challenges to program delivery, and multiple delivery methods may be needed to effectively improve skills and knowledge of clients. We examined the effectiveness of different delivery methods and changes in client skills, knowledge and abilities as a result of a complex, in-depth program, the Virginia Cow/Calf Management Course. Almost 500 producers took the 5-month course. Changes were measured from pre- and post-course surveys. Skills easily employed by the producers were readily adopted. Experiential learning opportunities and written materials had the greatest impact on producers, while Web-based information and discussion groups were marginally effective
