Hypervelocity gun
A velocity amplifier system which uses both electric and chemical energy for projectile propulsion is provided in a compact hypervelocity gun suitable for laboratory use. A relatively heavy layer of a tamping material such as concrete encloses a loop of an electrically conductive material. An explosive charge at least partially surrounding the loop is adapted to collapse the loop upon detonation of the charge. A source of electricity charges the loop through two leads, and an electric switch which is activated by the charge explosive charge, disconnects the leads from the source of electricity and short circuits them. An opening in the tamping material extends to the loop and forms a barrel. The loop, necked down in the opening, forms the sabot on which the projectile is located. When the loop is electrically charged and the explosive detonated, the loop is short circuited and collapsed thus building up a magnetic field which acts as a sabot catcher. The sabot is detached from the loop and the sabot and projectile are accelerated to hypervelocity

Field research on the spectral properties of crops and soils, volume 1
The experiment design, data acquisition and preprocessing, data base management, analysis results and development of instrumentation for the AgRISTARS Supporting Research Project, Field Research task are described. Results of several investigations on the spectral reflectance of corn and soybean canopies as influenced by cultural practices, development stage and nitrogen nutrition are reported as well as results of analyses of the spectral properties of crop canopies as a function of canopy geometry, row orientation, sensor view angle and solar illumination angle are presented. The objectives, experiment designs and data acquired in 1980 for field research experiments are described. The development and performance characteristics of a prototype multiband radiometer, data logger, and aerial tower for field research are discussed
Atlas of soil reflectance properties
A compendium of soil spectral reflectance curves together with soil test results and site information is presented in an abbreviated manner listing those soil properties most important in influencing soil reflectance. Results are presented for 251 soils from 39 states and Brazil. A narrative key describes relationships between soil parameters and reflectance curves. All soils are classified according to the U.S. soil taxonomy and soil series name for ease of identification
Modeling one-dimensional island growth with mass-dependent detachment rates
We study one-dimensional models of particle diffusion and
attachment/detachment from islands where the detachment rates gamma(m) of
particles at the cluster edges increase with cluster mass m. They are expected
to mimic the effects of lattice mismatch with the substrate and/or long-range
repulsive interactions that work against the formation of long islands.
Short-range attraction is represented by an overall factor epsilon<<1 in the
detachment rates relatively to isolated particle hopping rates [epsilon ~
exp(-E/T), with binding energy E and temperature T]. We consider various
gamma(m), from rapidly increasing forms such as gamma(m) ~ m to slowly
increasing ones, such as gamma(m) ~ [m/(m+1)]^b. A mapping onto a column
problem shows that these systems are zero-range processes, whose steady states
properties are exactly calculated under the assumption of independent column
heights in the Master equation. Simulation provides island size distributions
which confirm analytic reductions and are useful whenever the analytical tools
cannot provide results in closed form. The shape of island size distributions
can be changed from monomodal to monotonically decreasing by tuning the
temperature or changing the particle density rho. Small values of the scaling
variable X=epsilon^{-1}rho/(1-rho) favour the monotonically decreasing ones.
However, for large X, rapidly increasing gamma(m) lead to distributions with
peaks very close to and rapidly decreasing tails, while slowly increasing
gamma(m) provide peaks close to /2$ and fat right tails.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
Linear polarization of light by two wheat canopies measured at many view angles
The linear polarization and reflection of visible light by wheat as a function of sun-view directions, crop development stage, and wavelength were examined. Two-hundred spectra were taken continuously in wave-lengths from 0.45 to 0.72 Micron in 33 view directions using an Exotech model 20C spectroradiometer six meters above two wheat canopies in the boot and fully headed maturity stages. The analysis results show that the amount of linearly polarized light from the wheat canopies is greatest in the blue spectral region and decreases gradually with increasing wavelength. The results also show that the linearly polarized light from the canopies is generally greatest in the azimuth direction of the Sun and tends toward zero as the view direction tends toward the direction of the hot spot or anti-solar point. It is demonstrated that the single, angle of incidence of sunlight on the leaf, explains almost all of the variation of the amount of polarized light with Sun-view direction
Simulated response of a multispectral scanner over wheat as a function of wavelength and view/illumination direction
The reflectance response with view angle of wheat, was analyzed. The analyses, which assumes there are no atmospheric effects, and otherwise simulates the response of a multispectral scanner, is based upon spectra taken continuously in wavelength from 0.45 to 2.4 micrometers at more than 1200 view/illumination directions using an Exotech model 20C spectra radiometer. Data were acquired six meters above four wheat canopies, each at a different growth stage. The analysis shows that the canopy reflective response is a pronounced function of illumination angle, scanner view angle and wavelength. The variation is greater at low solar elevations compared to high solar elevations

Responsible investment and stewardship in Japan
Responsible investment has grown globally over the last two decades, with a movement
from screening strategies towards active ownership. In the UK this development was
accelerated by the launch of the Stewardship Code. Not part of the global development,
however, is Japan. The Japanese financial market is the only developed financial market
globally that did not see a surge in assets under management invested in responsible
investment products. In 2014, the Financial Service Authority (FSA) Japan launched the
Japanese version of the Stewardship Code, the Principles for Responsible Institutional
Investors (PRII) in order to boost responsible investment, focusing especially on active
ownership. This thesis analyses the development of responsible investment and
stewardship in Japan, with a focus on the question of whether or not stewardship increases
accountability. The project is based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with experts
in the Japanese market. In 2014, 12 interviews were conducted with investment
managers, 11 with investment analysts and 8 with academics, researchers, and
consultants. The study finds that several institutional logics are currently competing in
the Japanese financial market and that hybrid logics are emerging. One key aspect of a
sub-set of these logics is impression management, which occurs in investor-investee
meetings. The study finds that trust in the long-term alignment of incentives between
investor and investee company is the main determinant for the occurrence of impression
management during investor-investee meetings. Consequently, stewardship can either
increase accountability and serve as an important corporate governance tool, or create a
myth of accountability without any real effect on accountability
