    Archaean rocks provide a record of the early stages of planetary evolution. The interpretation is frustrated by the probable unrepresentative nature of the preserved crust and by the well known ambiguities of tectonic geological synthesis. Broad constraints can be placed on the tectonic processes in the early Earth from global scale modeling of thermal and chemical evolution of the Earth and its hydrosphere and atmosphere. The Archean record is the main test of such models. Available general model constraints are outlined based on the global tectonic setting within which Archaean crust evolved and on the direct evidence the Archaean record provides, particularly the thermal state of the early Earth

    An activity model for phase equilibria in the H2O–CO2–NaCl system

    We present a semi-empirical thermodynamic model with uncertainties that encompasses the full range of compositions in H2O–CO2–NaCl mixtures in the range of 10–380 °C and 1–3500 bars. For binary H2O–CO2 mixtures, the activity–composition model is built from solubility experiments. The parameters describing interactions between H2O and CO2 are independent of the absolute thermodynamic properties of the end-members and vary strongly non-linearly with pressure and temperature. The activity of water remains higher than 0.88 in CO2-saturated solutions across the entire pressure–temperature range. In the H2O–NaCl system, it is shown that the speciation of aqueous components can be accounted for by a thermodynamic formalism where activities are described by interaction parameters varying with intensive properties such as pressure and temperature but not with concentration or ionic strength, ensuring consistency with the Gibbs–Duhem relation.The thermodynamic model reproduces solubility experiments of halite up to 650 °C and 10 kbar, and accounts for ion pairing of aqueous sodium and chloride ions with the use of associated and dissociated aqueous sodium chloride end-members whose relative proportions vary with salinity. In the H2O–CO2–NaCl system, an activity–composition model reproduces the salting-out effect with interactions parameters between aqueous CO2 and the aqueous species created by halite dissolution. The proposed thermodynamic properties are compatible with the THERMOCALC database (Holland and Powell, 2011) and the equations used to retrieve the activity model in H2O–CO2 can be readily applied to other systems, including minerals

    Being Small for Gestational Age: Does it Matter for the Neurodevelopment of Premature Infants? A Cohort Study.

    BACKGROUND: Whether being small for gestational age (SGA) increases the risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcome in premature infants remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: to study the impact of SGA (birthweight < percentile 10) on cognition, behavior, neurodevelopmental impairment and use of therapy at 5 years old. METHODS: This population-based prospective cohort included infants born before 32 weeks of gestation. Cognition was evaluated with the K-ABC, and behavior with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Primary outcomes were cognitive and behavioral scores, as well as neurodevelopmental impairment (cognitive score < 2SD, hearing loss, blindness, or cerebral palsy). The need of therapy, an indirect indicator of neurodevelopmental impairment, was a secondary outcome. Linear and logistic regression models were used to analyze the association of SGA with neurodevelopment. RESULTS: 342/515 (76%) premature infants were assessed. SGA was significantly associated with hyperactivity scores of the SDQ (coefficient 0.81, p < 0.04), but not with cognitive scores, neurodevelopmental impairment or the need of therapy. Gestational age, socio-economic status, and major brain lesions were associated with cognitive outcome in the univariate and multivariate model, whereas asphyxia, sepsis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia were associated in the univariate model only. Severe impairment was associated with fetal tobacco exposition, asphyxia, gestational age and major brain lesions. Different neonatal factors were associated with the use of single or multiple therapies: children with one therapy were more likely to have suffered birth asphyxia or necrotizing enterocolitis, whereas the need for several therapies was predicted by major brain lesions. DISCUSSION: In this large cohort of premature infants, assessed at 5 years old with a complete panel of tests, SGA was associated with hyperactive behavior, but not with cognition, neurodevelopmental impairment or use of therapy. Birthweight <10th percentile alone does not appear to be an independent risk factor of neurodevelopmental adverse outcome in preterm children

    Chemical fluxes from time series sampling of the Irrawaddy and Salween Rivers, Myanmar

    The Irrawaddy and Salween rivers in Myanmar deliver water fluxes to the ocean equal to ~ 70% of the Ganges–Brahmaputra river system. Together these systems are thought to deliver about half the dissolved load from the tectonically active Himalayan–Tibetan orogen. Previously very little data was available on the dissolved load and isotopic compositions of these major rivers. Here we present time series data of 171 samples collected fortnightly at intervals throughout 2004 to 2007 from the Irrawaddy and Salween at locations near both the river mouths, the up-stream Irrawaddy at Myitkyina, the Chindwin, a major tributary of the Irrawaddy and a set of 28 small tributaries which rise in the flood plain of the Irrawaddy between Yangon and Mandalay. The samples have been analysed for major cation, anion and 87Sr/86Sr ratios. The new data indicates that the Irrawaddy has an annual average Na concentration only a third of the widely quoted single previously published analysis. The Irrawaddy and Salween drain about 0.5% of global continental area and deliver about 3.3% of the global silicate-derived dissolved Ca + Mg fluxes and 2.6% of the global Sr riverine fluxes to the oceans. This compares with Ganges and Brahmaputra which deliver about 3.4% of the global silicate-derived dissolved Ca + Mg fluxes and 3.2% of the global Sr riverine fluxes to the oceans from about 1.1% of global continental area. The discharge-weighted mean 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the Irrawaddy is 0.71024 and the Salween 0.71466. The chemistry of the Salween and the Irrawaddy waters reflects their different bedrock geology. The catchment of the Salween extends across the Shan Plateau in Myanmar through the Eastern syntaxis of the Himalayas and into Tibet. The Irrawaddy flows over the Cretaceous and Tertiary magmatic and metamorphic rocks exposed along the western margin of the Shan Plateau and the Cretaceous to Neogene Indo-Burma ranges. The 87Sr/86Sr compositions of the Salween and Upper Irrawaddy (between 0.7128 and 0.7176) are significantly higher than the downstream Irrawaddy (0.7095 to 0.7108) and the Chindwin (0.7082 to 0.7095). The Irrawaddy and the Chindwin exhibit lower 87Sr/86Sr and Na/Ca ratios during and immediately post-monsoon, interpreted to reflect higher weathering of carbonate at high flow. The Salween exhibits higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios but lower Na/Ca ratios during the monsoon, interpreted to reflect higher inputs from the upper parts of the catchment in the Himalayas.The research was funded by the UK Natural Environmental Research Council grant NE/C513850/1.This is the final published version.     Chemical regulators of epithelial plasticity reveal a nuclear receptor pathway controlling myofibroblast differentiation

    Plasticity in epithelial tissues relates to processes of embryonic development, tissue fibrosis and cancer progression. Pharmacological modulation of epithelial transitions during disease progression may thus be clinically useful. Using human keratinocytes and a robotic high-content imaging platform, we screened for chemical compounds that reverse transforming growth factor β (TGF-β)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In addition to TGF-β receptor kinase inhibitors, we identified small molecule epithelial plasticity modulators including a naturally occurring hydroxysterol agonist of the liver X receptors (LXRs), members of the nuclear receptor transcription factor family. Endogenous and synthetic LXR agonists tested in diverse cell models blocked α-smooth muscle actin expression, myofibroblast differentiation and function. Agonist-dependent LXR activity or LXR overexpression in the absence of ligand counteracted TGF-β-mediated myofibroblast terminal differentiation and collagen contraction. The protective effect of LXR agonists against TGF-β-induced pro-fibrotic activity raises the possibility that anti-lipidogenic therapy may be relevant in fibrotic disorders and advanced cancer

    Factors associated with postmenstrual age at full oral feeding in very preterm infants.

    We aimed to identify variables associated with gestational age at full oral feeding in a cohort of very preterm infants. In this retrospective study, all infants born below 32 weeks of gestation and admitted to a level III neonatal unit in 2015 were included. We dichotomized our population of 122 infants through the median age at full oral feeding, and explored which variables were statistically different between the two groups. We then used linear regression analysis to study the association between variables known from the literature and variables we had identified and age at full oral feeding. The median postnatal age at full oral feeding was 36 6/7weeks post menstrual age (Q1-Q3 35 6/7-392/7), and was associated with the duration of hospital of stay. In the univariable linear regression, the variables significantly associated with full oral feeding were gestational age, socioeconomic status, sepsis, patent ductus arteriosus, duration of supplementary oxygen, of non-invasive and invasive ventilation, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. In the multivariable regression analysis, duration of non-invasive ventilation and oxygen therapy, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and patent ductus arteriosus were associated with an older age at full oral feeding, with bronchopulmonary dysplasia the single most potent predictor. Lung disease severity is a major determinant of age at full oral feeding and thus length of stay in this population. Other factors associated with FOF include socioeconomic status and patent ductus arteriosus, There is a need for research addressing evidence-based bundles of care for these infants at risk of long-lasting feeding and neurodevelopmental impairments

    The Joint Observation in Neonatology and Neurodevelopmental Outcome of Preterm Infants at Six Months Corrected Age: Secondary Outcome Data from a Randomised Controlled Trial.

    This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a standardised joint observation (JOIN) performed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on the neurodevelopment of preterm infants at six months corrected age (CA) compared with a preterm control group. In this monocentric interventional randomised controlled trial, we allocated 76 mothers and their preterm neonates to either JOIN, an early one-session intervention, or standard care during the NICU hospitalisation. The neurodevelopment of the preterm infants was assessed by standardised developmental tests at six months CA and compared between the intervention and the control groups. This randomised controlled trial was registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02736136) in April 2016. Sixty-five infants underwent neurodevelopmental assessment at six months CA. There were no significant differences between the two groups in neurodevelopmental outcome measures. The JOIN intervention was not associated with significant improvement in neurodevelopment at six months CA in preterm infants
