Radio Caribbean Pearl - The role of community radios in the Nicaraguan Autonomous Region of the Southern Atlantic
Established in 1998 the community radio stations Radio Caribbean Pearl is carrying on NicaraguaÂŽs strong tradition of community radio broadcasting, dating back to the Sandinista revolution in 1970ÂŽs and 198 ÂŽs. The station is characterized best by its remote location on NicaraguaÂŽs Atlantic coast and the variety of indigenous ethnicities in its reach. This paper investigates the role of the community radio station for the empowerment of the inhabitants of Pearl Lagoon. It gives insights to the content broadcasted, the station management, the achievement and struggles, and puts a strong focus on the social impacts on the community it serves. All of the findings are discussed in the specific context of the current social and political situation of the RegiĂłn AutĂłnoma del AtlĂĄntico Sur (RAAS), since this context is crucial to
the stationâs role and purpose. In the course of this qualitative case study, six problem-centered interviews with radio producers and representatives from development NGOs were carried out during two field research trips to the Pearl Lagoon in May 2014 and February 2015
Views on the Past, Present, and Future of Business and Information Systems Engineering
ââThe times they are a-changin,ââ a famous song title by Bob Dylan, also applies to our profession and our subject of study. Information technology has always been a driver for innovation. The recent years, however, have seen IT-based innovations that truly impact everybodyâs lives. Everything that can be digitized will be digitized, and this trend is continuing at an amazing speed. For a discipline that looks at the design and utilization of
information systems these are exciting times. Yet, it is also a time full of challenges. While our discipline has much to contribute, it competes with other disciplines for topics and ideas. Also, the scope of topics studied has become broader and broader, and so have our methods. While initial work in Business and Information Systems Engineering (BISE) was often rooted in artificial intelligence, database systems, or operations research, the community has adopted new approaches to address new types of problems. Nowadays, we also have a strong group of academics working primarily with empirical methods or methods from microeconomics, to name just a few. This development towards a more multiparadigmatic discipline also had its challenges and there were controversial discussions along the way

Vitamin A derivatives in the prevention and treatment of human cancer.
Vitamin A is essential for normal cellular growth and differentiation. A vast amount of laboratory data have clearly demonstrated the potent antiproliferative and differentiation-inducing effects of vitamin A and the synthetic analogues (retinoids). Recent in-vitro work has led to the exciting proposal that protein kinase-C may be centrally involved in many of retinoids' anticancer actions including the effects on ornithine decarboxylase induction, intracellular polyamine levels, and epidermal growth factor receptor number. Several intervention trials have clearly indicated that natural vitamin A at clinically tolerable doses has only limited activity against human neoplastic processes. Therefore, clinical work has focused on the synthetic derivatives with higher therapeutic indexes. In human cancer prevention, retinoids have been most effective for skin diseases, including actinic keratosis, keratoacanthoma, epidermodysplasia verruciformis, dysplastic nevus syndrome, and basal cell carcinoma. Several noncutaneous premaligancies, however, are currently receiving more attention in retinoid trials. Definite retinoid activity has been documented in oral leukoplakia, laryngeal papillomatosis, superficial bladder carcinoma, cervical dysplasia, bronchial metaplasia, and preleukemia. Significant therapeutic advances are also occurring with this class of drugs in some drug-resistant malignancies and several others that have become refractory, including advanced basal cell cancer, mycosis fungoides, melanoma, acute promyelocytic leukemia, and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and of the head and neck. This report comprehensively presents the clinical data using retinoids as anticancer agents in human premalignant disorders and outlines the ongoing and planned studies with retinoids in combination and adjuvant therapy
The dawn of the information age in least developed countries (LDCs): lessons learned from four case studies
The emerging information age is characterised by the ubiquitous availability of information and communication technologies. While in highly developed countries, due to heavy investments in the telecommunication infrastructure, the public and scientific discussion more and more focuses on the so-called digital divide 2.0, i.e. the lack of ICT skills, for developing countries both, the access to and the use of ICTs still remain a huge challenge.
The goal of my dissertation thesis is to highlight these challenges, as well as the opportunities that occur for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) on their way towards an information society. The study examines ICTs in four geographically and culturally diverse regions, including the countries Yemen, Guatemala, Malawi and Lao PDR, on the macro and on the micro level. The research on the macro level is guided by the central research question: Are ICTs in LDCs used to foster societal development or are they reinforcing imperialistic patterns of Western hegemony?
On the micro level the project aims to investigate the usersâ demographics, their habits of ICT use, as well as the barriers and opportunities for the citizens emerging from the upcoming information age. The findings from the macro and the micro level will be correlated on the basis of the five dimensions of society (ecological, political, cultural, economical and technological) to assess the state of the art and to formulate strategies to counter the current eColonialism tendencies and to foster a sustainable implementation of ICTs in LDCs

Freely suspended two-dimensional electron gases
We present a new technique allowing us to build freely suspended two-dimensional electron gases from AlGaAs/GaAs/AlAs heterostructures. This technique relies on an MBE-grown structures that includes a sacrificial layer
Integrating suspended quantum dot circuits for applications in nanomechanics
We present an integrated nanoelectromechanical circuit designed for achieving ultrasensitive displacement detection. It consists of a suspended quantum dot defined in the two-dimensional electron system of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure and a mechanical resonator located in close vicinity. Operation of the individual components is demonstrated: Mechanical as well as transport properties of the resonator and the electron system are specified, respectively. Coulomb blockade in a freely suspended quantum dot is revealed. The data are used to estimate the maximum displacement sensitivity of the device to be 0.029 Ă
