Mixed Valence Europium Nitridosilicate Eu2SiN3
The mixed valence europium nitridosilicate Eu2SiN3 has been synthesized at 900°C in welded tantalum ampules starting from europium and silicon diimide Si(NH)2 in a lithium flux. The structure of the black material has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (Cmca (no. 64), a=542.3(11) pm, b=1061.0(2) pm, c=1162.9(2) pm, Z=8, 767 independent reflections, 37 parameters, R1=0.017, wR2=0.032). Eu2SiN3 is a chain-type silicate comprising one-dimensional infinite nonbranched zweier chains of corner-sharing SiN4 tetrahedra running parallel [100] with a maximum stretching factor fs=1.0. The compound is isostructural with Ca2PN3 and Rb2TiO3, and it represents the first example of a nonbranched chain silicate in the class of nitridosilicates. There are two crystallographically distinct europium sites (at two different Wyckoff positions 8f) being occupied with Eu2+ and Eu3+, respectively. 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy of Eu2SiN3 differentiates unequivocally these two europium atoms and confirms their equiatomic multiplicity, showing static mixed valence with a constant ratio of the Eu2+ and Eu3+ signals over the whole temperature range. The Eu2+ site shows magnetic hyperfine field splitting at 4.2 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements exhibit Curie-Weiss behavior above 24 K with an effective magnetic moment of 7.5 ÎŒB/f.u. and a small contribution of Eu3+, in accordance with Eu2+ and Eu3+ in equiatomic ratio. Ferromagnetic ordering at unusually high temperature is detected at TC=24 K. DFT calculations of Eu2SiN3 reveal a band gap of âŒ0.2 eV, which is in agreement with the black color of the compound. Both DFT calculations and lattice energetic calculations (MAPLE) corroborate the assignment of two crystallographically independent Eu sites to Eu2+ and Eu3+
Observation of extremely slow hole spin relaxation in self-assembled quantum dots
We report the measurement of extremely slow hole spin relaxation dynamics in
small ensembles of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots. Individual spin
orientated holes are optically created in the lowest orbital state of each dot
and read out after a defined storage time using spin memory devices. The
resulting luminescence signal exhibits a pronounced polarization memory effect
that vanishes for long storage times. The hole spin relaxation dynamics are
measured as a function of external magnetic field and lattice temperature. We
show that hole spin relaxation can occur over remarkably long timescales in
strongly confined quantum dots (up to ~270 us), as predicted by recent theory.
Our findings are supported by calculations that reproduce both the observed
magnetic field and temperature dependencies. The results suggest that hole spin
relaxation in strongly confined quantum dots is due to spin orbit mediated
phonon scattering between Zeeman levels, in marked contrast to higher
dimensional nanostructures where it is limited by valence band mixing.Comment: Published by Physical Review
Quality of Life 10 Years after Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Multicenter Study
Objective: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has recently become the most commonly applied bariatric procedure worldwide. Substantial regaining of weight or severe reflux might compromise quality of life (QOL) after SG in the long-term follow-up. Long-term data on patientsâ QOL is limited, even though the persistent improvement in QOL is one of the aims of bariatric surgery. The objective of this study was to present patientsâ QOL 10 years after SG. Methods: Of 65 SG patients with a follow-up of â„10 years after SG who were asked to fill out the Bariatric Quality of Life Index (BQL) and Short Form 36 (SF36) questionnaires, 48 (74%) completed them. This multicenter study was performed in a university hospital setting in Austria. Results: The BQL score revealed nonsignificant differences between the patients with > 50% or < 50% excess weight loss (EWL). It did show significant differences between patients with and without any symptoms of reflux. Patients with < 50% EWL scored significantly lower in 3/8 categories of SF36. Patients suffering from reflux had significantly lower scores in all categories. Conclusions: EWL and symptomatic reflux impair patientsâ long-term QOL after SG
Dynamic Acoustic Control of Individual Optically Active Quantum Dot-like Emission Centers in Heterostructure Nanowires
We probe and control the optical properties of emission centers forming in
radial het- erostructure GaAs-Al0.3Ga0.7As nanowires and show that these
emitters, located in Al0.3Ga0.7As layers, can exhibit quantum-dot like
characteristics. We employ a radio frequency surface acoustic wave to
dynamically control their emission energy and occupancy state on a nanosec- ond
timescale. In the spectral oscillations we identify unambiguous signatures
arising from both the mechanical and electrical component of the surface
acoustic wave. In addition, differ- ent emission lines of a single quantum dot
exhibit pronounced anti-correlated intensity oscilla- tions during the acoustic
cycle. These arise from a dynamically triggered carrier extraction out of the
quantum dot to a continuum in the radial heterostructure. Using finite element
modeling and Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin theory we identify quantum tunneling as
the underlying mech- anism. These simulation results quantitatively reproduce
the observed switching and show that in our systems these quantum dots are
spatially separated from the continuum by > 10.5 nm.Comment: This document is the unedited Author's version of a Submitted Work

Theories in Business and Information Systems Engineering
Even though the idea of science enjoys an impressive reputation, there seems to be no precise conception of science. On the one hand, there is no unified definition of the extension of activities subsumed under the notion of science. According to the narrow conception that is common in Anglo-Saxon countries, science is restricted to those disciplines that investigate nature and aim at explanation and prediction of natural phenomena. A wider conception that can be found in various European countries includes social sciences, the humanities and engineering. On the other hand and related to the first aspect, there is still no general consensus on the specific characteristics of scientific discoveries and scientific knowledge

Development of a helium storage system based on glass microspheres
The theory of diffusion processes within glass microspheres indicates that a temperature-controlled storage and release of helium in hollow glass microspheres is possible. This work aims to show how this property is applicable for a gas storage system or a gas generator on satellites. Test facilities for filling and outgassing should be tested to find out how much helium is stored for different pressures. Furthermore, a storage tank for use in satellites is constructed. The entire system should be examined in some test series. To achieve a rapid release of helium, a high heating power due to the poor thermal conductivity of the glass microspheres is required. Satellites have a limited power capacity, so it is important to minimize the heating power. To this end, the glass microspheres are coated. A copper coating is deposited by magnetron sputtering. Measurements of the thermal conductivity should show if the thermal conductivity of glass microspheres increases, by this treatment.6
