Ogbu and the debate on educational achievement: an exploration of the links between education, migration, identity and belonging
This paper looks at some of the issues raised by Ogbuâs work in relation to the education of different minority ethnic groups. Ogbu poses questions such as the value attached to education,
its links to the future and its measurable outcomes in terms of âsuccessâ as experienced by black participants. The desire for better life chances leads families to consider migration to a new country or resettlement within the same country, thus making migration both a local and a global phenomenon. As an example, attention is drawn to the situation facing South Asian
children and their families in the UK. In terms of ethnicity and belonging, the wider question that is significant for many countries in the West after âNine-Elevenâ is the education of Muslim children. A consideration of this current situation throws Ogbuâs identification of âautonomous minorityâ into question. It is argued that a greater understanding of diverse needs has to be
accompanied by a concerted effort to confront racism and intolerance in schools and in society, thus enabling all communities to make a useful contribution and to avoid the âriskâ of failure and disenchantment
Haptically enabled interactivity and immersive virtual assembly
Virtual training systems are attracting paramount attention from the manufacturing industries due to their potential advantages over the conventional training practices such as general assembly. Within this virtual training realm for general assembly, a haptically enabled interactive and immersive virtual reality (HIVEx) system is presented. The idea is to imitate real assembly training scenarios by providing comprehensive user interaction as well as by enforcing physical constraints within the virtual environment through the use of haptics technology. The developed system employs a modular system approach providing flexibility of reconfiguration and scalability as well as better utilization of the current multi-core computer architecture. The user interacts with the system using haptics device and data glove while fully immersed into the virtual environment with depth perception. An evaluation module, incorporated into the system, automatically logs and evaluates the information through the simulation providing user performance and improvements over time. A ruggedized portable version of the system is also developed and presented with full system capabilities allowing easy relocation with different factory environments. A number of training scenarios has been developed with varying degree of complexity to exploit the potential of the presented system. The presented system can be employed for teaching and training of existing assembly processes as well as the design of new optimised assembly operations. Furthermore, the presented system can assist in optimizing existing practices by evaluating the effectiveness and the level of knowledge transfer involved in the process. Within the aforementioned conceptual. framework, a working prototype is developed.<br /
Multilingual gendered identities: female undergraduate students in London talk about heritage languages
In this paper I explore how a group of female university students, mostly British Asian and in their late teens and early twenties, perform femininities in talk about heritage languages. I argue that analysis of this talk reveals ways in which the participants enact âculturally intelligibleâ gendered subject positions. This frequently involves negotiating the norms of âheteronormativityâ, constituting femininity in terms of marriage, motherhood and maintenance of heritage culture and language, and âgirl powerâ, constituting femininity in terms of youth, sassiness, glamour and individualism. For these young women, I ask whether higher education can become a site in which they have the opportunities to explore these identifications and examine other ways of imagining the self and what their stories suggest about âdoing beingâ a young British Asian woman in London
Plasmons in coupled bilayer structures
We calculate the collective charge density excitation dispersion and spectral
weight in bilayer semiconductor structures {\it including effects of interlayer
tunneling}. The out-of-phase plasmon mode (the ``acoustic'' plasmon) develops a
long wavelength gap in the presence of tunneling with the gap being
proportional to the square root (linear power) of the tunneling amplitude in
the weak (strong) tunneling limit. The in-phase plasmon mode is qualitatively
unaffected by tunneling. The predicted plasmon gap should be a useful tool for

Role of Activity in Human Dynamics
The human society is a very complex system; still, there are several
non-trivial, general features. One type of them is the presence of power-law
distributed quantities in temporal statistics. In this Letter, we focus on the
origin of power-laws in rating of movies. We present a systematic empirical
exploration of the time between two consecutive ratings of movies (the
interevent time). At an aggregate level, we find a monotonous relation between
the activity of individuals and the power-law exponent of the interevent-time
distribution. At an individual level, we observe a heavy-tailed distribution
for each user, as well as a negative correlation between the activity and the
width of the distribution. We support these findings by a similar data set from
mobile phone text-message communication. Our results demonstrate a significant
role of the activity of individuals on the society-level patterns of human
behavior. We believe this is a common character in the interest-driven human
dynamics, corresponding to (but different from) the universality classes of

Haptically enable interactive virtual assembly training system development and evaluation
Virtual training systems are attracting paramount attention from the manufacturing industries due to their potential advantages over the conventional training practices. Significant cost savings can be realized due to the shorter times for the development of different training-scenarios as well as reuse of existing designed engineering (math) models. In addition, use of computer based virtual reality (VR) training systems can shorten the time span from computer aided product design to commercial production due to non-reliance on the hardware parts for training. Within the aforementioned conceptual framework, a haptically enabled interactive and immersive virtual reality (HIVEx) system is presented. Unlike existing VR systems, the presented idea tries to imitate real physical training scenarios by providing comprehensive user interaction, constrained within the physical limitations of the real world. These physical constrains are imposed by the haptics devices in the virtual environment. As a result, in contrast to the existing VR systems that are capable of providing knowledge generally about assembly sequences only, the proposed system helps in cognitive learning and procedural skill development as well, due to its high physically interactive nature.<br /
Calculation of the two-photon decay rates of hydrogen-like ions by using B-polynomials
A new approach is laid out to investigate the two photon atomic transitions.
It is based on application of the finite basis solutions constructed from the
Bernstein Polynomial (B-Polynomial) sets. We show that such an approach
provides a very promising route for the relativistic second- (and even
higher-order) calculations since it allows for analytical evaluation of the
involved matrices elements. In order to illustrate possible applications of the
method and to verify its accuracy, detailed calculations are performed for the
2s_{1/2}-1s_{1/2} transition in neutral hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions, and
are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the well-established
B-spline-basis-set approach
Dynamic Simulation Methods for Evaluating Motor Vehicle and Roadway Design and Resolving Policy Issues
This study had three objectives: (1) to develop a comprehensive truck simulation that executes rapidly, has a modular program construction to allow variation of vehicle characteristics, and is able to realistically predict vehicle motion and the tire-road surface interaction forces; (2) to develop a model of doweled portland cement concrete pavement that can be used to determine slab deflection and stress at predetermined nodes, and that allows for the variation of traditional thickness design factors; and (3) to implement these two models on a work station with suitable menu driven modules so that both existing and proposed pavements can be evaluated with respect to design life, given specific characteristics of the heavy vehicles that will be using the facility. This report summarizes the work that has been performed during the first year of the study. Briefly, the following has been accomplished: A two dimensional model of a typical 3-S2 tractor-trailer combination was created. A finite element structural analysis program, ANSYS, was used to model the pavement. Computer runs have been performed varying the parameters defining both vehicle and road elements. The resulting time specific displacements for each node are plotted, and the displacement basin is generated for defined vehicles. Relative damage to the pavement can then be estimated. A damage function resulting from load replications must be assumed that will be reflected by further pavement deterioration. Comparison with actual damage on Interstate 80 will eventually allow verification of these procedures
