Effect of electroplating industrial waste on “available phosphorus” of soil in relation to other physicochemical properties

    Get PDF
Unorganized land disposal of industrial wastes contaminates land and ground water. The Wazirpur Industrial area of Delhi, a metropolitan city, generates highly acidic (pH 2 - 3.8) and toxic waste, and disposal remains a perpetual problem. This waste contains a high quantity of macronutrients as well as heavy metals because major industries are involved in metals finishing. Wastes of these industries were mixed with municipal waste at roads. Hence a study was undertaken to verify the suitability of land disposal of this toxic waste. The waste was first treated with three doses of lime (0, 0.5 and 1%) and then mixed with two types of soils from two different locations in three different proportions viz. 10, 20 and 30%, maintaining soil moisture level at 50% of water holding capacity. These samples were incubated for 120 days. All three waste amendments resulted in an increase in available phosphorus (AP) in both waste- amended soils as compared to the control soils. It is statistically significant at p = 0.05 level. During the 120 days of incubation highest value (36.41 ± 0.01 ppm for site 1 soil and 30.40 ± 0.03 ppm for site 2 soil) of available phosphorus had been found at 20th day of incubation for both the soils. Lime treatment at the rate of 0.5% gave in 10 and 20% treatments significantly positive result as compared to 0 and 1% treatment. Only in 30% waste amendment 1% lime treatment gave better amount of available phosphorus (27.77 ± 0.01 ppm and 24.84 ± 0.03 ppm for site 1 and site 2 soils respectively). The finding of the study evident that 0.5% lime treated 10% industrial waste can be used as manure for soil. The result is of further interest from a plant nutrition standpoint since the amount of potentially mobile-P measured in this study could be related to the amount of available phosphorous required for crop growth.Key words: Industrial waste, land disposal, incubation study, available phosphorus

    Get PDF
We have been systematically carrying out experimental and simulation studies of the polarization properties of atmospheric ˇCerenkov events (ACE) produced by very high energy (VHE) and ultrahigh energy (UHE) γ-ray and cosmic ray proton progenitors. We present here an interim report on the work, based on some recent simulation investigations

    Diffusion with rearranging traps

A model for diffusion on a cubic lattice with a random distribution of traps is developed. The traps are redistributed at certain time intervals. Such models are useful for describing systems showing dynamic disorder, such as ion-conducting polymers. In the present model the traps are infinite, unlike an earlier version with finite traps, this model has a percolation threshold. For the infinite trap version a simple analytical calculation is possible and the results agree qualitatively with simulation.Comment: Latex, five figure

A contribution to the earthworm (Annelida, Clitellata, Megadrili) fauna of the central Indian state Chhattisgarh, India

Drawida willsi was the first species of earthworm reported from Chhattisgarh state by Michaelsen in 1907. After that, only one survey of earthworm has been carried out there in 2021. Here we present a first-hand information on the survey of earthworms carried out in Chhattisgarh state in the year 2022. The study documents 12 species belonging to 4 families. Among these, Dichogaster affinis (Michaelsen, 1890) and Polypheretima elongata (Perrier, 1872) are exotic peregrine species. Species such as Drawida limella Gates, 1934, Lennogaster chittagongensis (Stephenson, 1917) and Octochaetona compta (Gates, 1945) expanded their distribution to central India. The study also noted the presence of microplastic for the first time in the ingesta of an earthworm (Lampito mauritii Kinberg, 1867) from India. Further detailed survey would add more species into the faunal list of Chhattisgarh, even species new to science

Rho-omega mixing in asymmetric nuclear matter via QCD sum rule approach

We evaluate the operator product expansion (OPE) for a mixed correlator of the isovector and isoscalar vector currents in the background of the nucleon density with intrinsic isospin asymmetry [i.e. excess of neutrons over protons] and match it with its imaginary part, given by resonances and continuum, via the dispersion relation. The leading density-dependent contribution to ρ−ω\rho-\omega mixing is due the scattering term, which turns out to be larger than any density dependent piece in the OPE. We estimate that the asymmetric density of nn−np∌2.5×10−2 fm3n_n-n_p \sim 2.5 \times 10^{-2} ~{\rm fm^3} induces the amplitude of ρ−ω\rho-\omega mixing, equal in magnitude to the mixing amplitude in vacuum, with the constructive interference for positive and destructive for negative values of nn−npn_n-n_p. We revisit sum rules for vector meson masses at finite nucleon density to point out the numerical importance of the screening term in the isoscalar channel, which turns out to be one order of magnitude larger than any density-dependent condensates over the Borel window. This changes the conclusions about the density dependence of mωm_\omega, indicating ∌40\sim 40 MeV increase at nuclear saturation density.Comment: 8 pages, Revte

Observations of TeV gamma-rays from Mrk 421 during Dec. 2005 to Apr. 2006 with the TACTIC telescope

The TACTIC Îł\gamma-ray telescope has observed Mrk 421 on 66 clear nights from Dec. 07, 2005 to Apr. 30, 2006, totalling ∌\sim 202 hours of on-source observations. Here, we report the detection of flaring activity from the source at ≄\geq 1 TeV energy and the time-averaged differential Îł\gamma-ray spectrum in the energy range 1-11 TeV for the data taken between Dec. 27, 2005 to Feb. 07, 2006 when the source was in a relatively higher state as compared to the rest of the observation period. Analysis of this data spell, comprising about ∌\sim97h reveals the presence of a ∌12.0σ\sim 12.0 \sigma Îł\gamma-ray signal with daily flux of >> 1 Crab unit on several days. A pure power law spectrum with exponent −3.11±0.11-3.11\pm0.11 as well as a power law spectrum with an exponential cutoff (Γ=−2.51±0.26(\Gamma = -2.51\pm0.26 and E0=(4.7±2.1)TeV)E_0=(4.7\pm2.1) TeV) are found to provide reasonable fits to the inferred differential spectrum within statistical uncertainties. We believe that the TeV light curve presented here, for nearly 5 months of extensive coverage, as well as the spectral information at Îł\gamma-ray energies of >> 5 TeV provide a useful input for other groups working in the field of Îł\gamma-ray astronomy.Comment: 13pages,4figures; Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

Effect of B-site cationic substitution on the structural, spectroscopic, and conductivity behaviour of Ho₂(Hf₁₋ₓZrₓ)₂O₇ (x=0 and 1)

    Get PDF
Ideally, a solid electrolyte which is a central component of SOFC should exhibit high anionic or cationic ionic conductivity at the proposed operating temperatures. In most cases, the performance is compromised when operating above 1000 °C due to poor mechanical, thermal and chemical stability of selected functional and non-functional materials. In this context, pyrochlores are one of the potential candidates due to their high conductivity, flexibility to accommodate large cations, and high mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. In this study, we report the synthesis of nano-powders of Ho₂Hf₂O₇ (HH) and Ho₂Zr₂O₇ (HZ) pyrochlore ceramics by eco-friendly alginate mediated ion-exchange process also known as Leeds Alginate Process (LAP) and provide further insight into the structure - conductivity relationship of HH and HZ compounds by EXAFS studies. Both the compositions were sintered at temperatures, ranging from 1100 °C-1500 °C at 2 h dwell time to achieve the desired high-density ceramic with stable pyrochlore structure. X-ray diffraction and Extended X-ray absorption fine structural (EXAFS) analysis showed superlattice reflections and complex coordination geometry of these oxides. The coordination number and disorder factor in the case of HZ were found to be more stable than the HH sample, as evident from the EXAFS. Impedance spectroscopy and dc-conductivity analysis showed a better charge transport behavior in HZ ceramics than in HH making HZ as a preferred solid electrolyte for SOFC. The conductivity of Ho₂Zr₂O₇ is comparable with the best-known fluorite oxide-ion conductor such as Sc₂O₃-stabilized Zro₂ at 500 °C

Flavor changing Z-decays from scalar interactions at a Giga-Z Linear Collider

The flavor changing decay Z -> d_I \bar{d}_J is investigated with special emphasis on the b \bar{s} final state. Various models for flavor violation are considered: two Higgs doublet models (2HDM's), supersymmetry (SUSY) with flavor violation in the up and down-type squark mass matrices and SUSY with flavor violation mediated by R-parity-violating interaction. We find that, within the SUSY scenarios for flavor violation, the branching ratio for the decay Z -> b \bar{s} can reach 10^{-6} for large \tan\beta values, while the typical size for this branching ratio in the 2HDM's considered is about two orders of magnitudes smaller at best. Thus, flavor changing SUSY signatures in radiative Z decays such as Z -> b \bar{s} may be accessible to future ``Z factories'' such as a Giga-Z version of the TESLA design.Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, REVTeX4.
