Health Aspects of Native American Indians and Alaskan Natives

    Get PDF
This thesis will focus on the decline in health of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives in regards to chronic diseases due to changes in their food habits, customs, traditions, and culture. The purpose of this study is to explore why Native Americans and Alaskans health has deteriorated in relation to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and alcoholism. Limitation in access to health care facilities includes geographic location, cul tural, and linguistic barriers. The studies to be discussed include: the Inter-Tribal Heart Project (ITHP) for cardiovascular disease; the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for self-reported risk factors; and the Navajo Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS) for chronic diseases associated with nutritional findings. Results of the analysis of these surveys produced considerable evidence to suggest that the hypothesis be accepted and conclude that, the movement away from traditional lifestyles, customs, and eating patterns has exacerbated a decline in their health

The Dynamic Reality of Adolescent Peer Networks and Sense of Belonging

    Get PDF
Dynamic features of peer network experiences (membership fluidity and network interconnectedness) were examined for their role in African American and White early adolescents’ sense of belonging in mathematics classrooms. Because these dynamic features are naturally present in adolescents’ peer group affiliations, attention to them provides a more accurate representation of the peer experiences that adolescents actually encounter than research models that ignore these experiences. After controlling for fall classroom belonging, spring classroom belonging was greater for African American and seventh-grade students than for White and sixth-grade students. Multiple-group memberships promoted classroom belonging among African American and seventh-grade students but undermined belonging among White and sixth-grade students. Network stability did not differentiate belonging. Study limitations and implications regarding the nature of peer group experiences and the social bases of belonging are discussed

Parent Communication in a Whole Language Kindergarten: What We Learned From a Busy First Year

    Get PDF
Among recent developments in literacy research and practice is the increased recognition of the critical roles that parents play in the education of their children (Rasinki and Fredericks, 1989). Involving parents in their child\u27s literacy learning is particularly important for kindergarten teachers. The kindergarten literacy curriculum should build upon what children have begun to learn at home, and, continue to involve parents in supporting their child\u27s literacy development. Communicating with parents on how they can continue to give active support to their children\u27s literacy learning is an important task for kindergarten teachers

Localization of Profilaggrin mRNA in Newborn Rat Skin by In Situ Hybridization

    Get PDF
Profilaggrin mRNA has been localized in newborn rat skin by in situ hybridization. The granular layer and the hair canals of the epidermis are strongly positive for profilaggrin mRNA, while the basal and spinous cell layers are negative. These results suggest that profilaggrin gene expression is under transcriptional regulation since profilaggrin protein detected by immunohistochemistry closely corresponds to the distribution of profilaggrin mRNA. In addition, our results suggest that the profilaggrin gene is not coordinately expressed with the genes specifying the differentiation-specific keratins

Municipal Consolidation and Organizational Realities: A Case from New York City

    Get PDF
Consolidation in the public sector has always been conceptualized as a tool for enhancing service provision and fiscal responsibility. The evidence is dubious in both front. Using self-administered questionnaire and follow-up interviews, this study attempts to explain why the merger of two NYC agencies (DJJ into ACS) is incomplete after six years based on employees’ perception. The paper contends that a well-designed and carefully-negotiated merger can lead to harmony while meeting the intended goals of the new organization. The study concludes that because of insufficient efforts in the three phases of merger (pre-merger, during and post-merger), employees were oblivious to the agency’s new mission and confused by contradicting policies

Assessing the impact of marine-derived nutrient on nitrogen cycling in Nequasset Lake in reponse to the 2012 migration of anadromous alewives (Alosa pseudoherangus)

Anadromous fish, such as alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) can provide an important link between coastal watersheds and the Atlantic Ocean along the Gulf of Maine. Alewives contribute marine-derived nutrients (MDN) in the form of nitrogen to freshwater lakes via excretion and mortality as they migrate upstream during spawning season. Previous attempts to detect MDN in the sedimentary record have provided equivocal results. Freshwater biota or the size of current alewife migrations may have a significant effect on the sedimentary MDN signal. The focus of this project is to determine the degree to which MDN were imported into Nequasset Lake, Woolwich Maine. These data represent the initial findings of an expanded, multi-institutional, multi-year study currently underway. The Nequasset Lake watershed covers an area of ~50 square kilometers and provides drinking water to the city of Bath and three other communities in Maine. Every spring, alewives return to Nequasset Lake to spawn, accessing the lake through a fish ladder adjacent to the water control dam. In April and May 2012, alewife counts were performed at the top of the fish ladder by volunteers of Trout Unlimited and Kennebec Estuary Land Trust. Water samples were collected from the top of the fish ladder, and from the 4 major stream inlets, and analyzed for nutrient concentrations (TDN, NO3-, NH4+) to construct a nitrogen budget. Additional samples were collected for δ15N of water NO3- analysis from April to June to trace marine-derived nitrogen from the alewives in the lake. δ15N of water NO3− (+1.6 ‰) suggests the only detectable MDN signal is at the top of Nequasset Dam. However, NH4+ concentrations may suggest Nequasset Brook and Sucker Brook be targeted for restoration management. Nutrient cycling models shows that the implications of MDN may be insignificant because nutrient loading from the 2012 migration only accounts for approximately 1% of the total nitrogen inputs

Preservice Teachers\u27 Perceptions of the Influence and Value of an Embedded, School-Based Field Experience

    Get PDF
This study explored how preservice teachers perceive the influence and value of an embedded, school-based field experience. Information was gathered from preservice teachers using surveys and a focus group interview. The data collected showed that an embedded field experience tied to a language arts methods course was generally a positive influence leading to great self-efficacy. Further, the data compared similarly to research supporting the notion that embedded field experiences generally have the effect of strengthening preservice teachers’ self-efficacy. Looking at Bandura’s work in Self-efficacy: Toward a unifying theory of behavioral change, it shows that early interactions and successes will boost the self-efficacy of preservice teachers. This study found that successful experiences help preservice teachers value their embedded, school-based field experiences and help view it as something positive. Even if the experience had its difficulties, preservice teachers were able to learn from the situation and if they ever find themselves in a similar circumstance, they will feel more confident about handling things. Therefore, when these preservice teachers become in-service teachers, they will feel more confident about their abilities compared to in-service teachers who did not have similar experiences in their teacher preparation program

Why Solve the Hamiltonian Constraint in Numerical Relativity?

The indefinite sign of the Hamiltonian constraint means that solutions to Einstein's equations must achieve a delicate balance--often among numerically large terms that nearly cancel. If numerical errors cause a violation of the Hamiltonian constraint, the failure of the delicate balance could lead to qualitatively wrong behavior rather than just decreased accuracy. This issue is different from instabilities caused by constraint-violating modes. Examples of stable numerical simulations of collapsing cosmological spacetimes exhibiting local mixmaster dynamics with and without Hamiltonian constraint enforcement are presented.Comment: Submitted to a volume in honor of Michael P. Ryan, Jr. Based on talk given at GR1
