    Young Crab-like pulsars and luminous X-ray sources in starbursts and optically dull galaxies

    Recent Chandra observations of nearby galaxies have revealed a number of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with super-Eddington luminosities, away from the central regions of non-active galaxies. The nature of these sources is still debated. We argue that a fraction of them could be young, Crab-like pulsars, the X-ray luminosity of which is powered by rotation. We use the pulsar birth parameters estimated from radio pulsar data to compute the steady-state pulsar X-ray luminosity distribution as a function of the star formation rate (SFR) in the galaxy. We find that ~10% of optically dull galaxies are expected to have a source with L_x >~ 10^{39} erg/s, while starbursts galaxies should each have several of these sources. We estimate that the X-ray luminosity of a few percents of galaxies is dominated by a single bright pulsar with L_x >~10^{39} erg/s, roughly independently of its SFR.     Root pathogen diversity and composition varies with climate in undisturbed grasslands, but less so in anthropogenically disturbed grasslands

    Soil-borne pathogens structure plant communities, shaping their diversity, and through these effects may mediate plant responses to climate change and disturbance. Little is known, however, about the environmental determinants of plant pathogen communities. Therefore, we explored the impact of climate gradients and anthropogenic disturbance on root-associated pathogens in grasslands. We examined the community structure of two pathogenic groups—fungal pathogens and oomycetes—in undisturbed and anthropogenically disturbed grasslands across a natural precipitation and temperature gradient in the Midwestern USA. In undisturbed grasslands, precipitation and temperature gradients were important predictors of pathogen community richness and composition. Oomycete richness increased with precipitation, while fungal pathogen richness depended on an interaction of precipitation and temperature, with precipitation increasing richness most with higher temperatures. Disturbance altered plant pathogen composition and precipitation and temperature had a reduced effect on pathogen richness and composition in disturbed grasslands. Because pathogens can mediate plant community diversity and structure, the sensitivity of pathogens to disturbance and climate suggests that degradation of the pathogen community may mediate loss, or limit restoration of, native plant diversity in disturbed grasslands, and may modify plant community response to climate change

    The Nuclear Stellar Cluster in the Seyfert~1 Galaxy NGC 3227: High Angular Resolution NIR Imaging and Spectroscopy

    NIR high angular resolution speckle imaging and imaging spectroscopy of the nuclear region (10'' ~ 840pc) of the Seyfert1 galaxy NGC3227 are presented. A nuclear stellar cluster is slightly resolved in the J and H band with increasing contribution to the NIR continuum from the K to the J band. The stellar absorption lines are extended compared to the neighboring continuum suggesting a cluster size of ~ 70pc FWHM. Analysis of those lines suggests that the stars are contributing about 65% (40%) of the total continuum emission in the H (K) band in a 3.6'' aperture. Population synthesis in conjunction with NIR spectral synthesis indicates an age of 25 to 50 Myr when red supergiants contribute most to the NIR light. This is supported by published optical data on the MgIb line and the CaII triplet. Although a higher age of ~ 0.5 Gyr where AGB stars dominate the NIR light can not be excluded, the observed parameters are at the limit of those expected for a cluster dominated by AGB stars. However, in either case the resolved stellar cluster contributes only about ~ 15 % of the total dynamical mass in the inner 300pc implying another much older stellar population. Pure constant star formation over the last 10 Gyr can be excluded. Therefore, at least two star formation/starburst events took place in the nucleus of NGC3227. Since such sequences in the nuclear star formation history are also observed in the nuclei of other galaxies a link between the activity of the star formation and the AGN itself seems likely.Comment: accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 46 pages, 15 figure

    N-band Imaging of Seyfert Nuclei and the MIR-X-ray correlation

    We present new mid-infrared (N-band) images of a sample of eight nearby Seyfert galaxies. In all of our targets, we detect a central unresolved source, which in some cases has been identified for the first time. In particular, we have detected the mid-infrared emission from the active nucleus of NGC 4945, which previously remained undetected at any wavelength but hard X-rays. We also detect circumnuclear extended emission in the Circinus galaxy along its major axis, and find marginal evidence for extended circumnuclear emission in NGC 3281. The high spatial resolution (1.7") of our data allows us to separate the flux of the nuclear point sources from the extended circumnuclear starburst (if present). We complement our sample with literature data for a number of non-active starburst galaxies, and relate the nuclear N-band flux to published hard (2-10 kev) X-ray fluxes. We find tight and well-separated correlations between nuclear N-band flux and X-ray flux for both Seyfert and starburst nuclei which span over 3 orders of magnitude in luminosity. We demonstrate that these correlations can be used as a powerful classification tool for galactic nuclei. For example, we find strong evidence against NGC 1808 currently harbouring an active Seyfert nucleus based on its position in the mid-infrared-X-ray diagram.     Reading sentences with a late closure ambiguity: does semantic information help?

    Stowe (1989) reported that semantic information eliminates garden paths in sentences with the direct-object vs. subject ambiguity, such as Even before the police stopped the driver was very frightened. Three experiments are presented which addressed some methodological problems in Stowe's study. Experiment 1, using a word-by-word, self-paced reading task with grammaticality judgements, manipulated animacy of the first subject noun while controlling for the plausibility of the transitive action. The results suggest that initial sentence analysis is not guided by animacy. Experiment 2 and 3, using the self-paced task with grammaticality judgements and eye-tracking, varied the plausibility of the direct-object nouns to test revision effects. Plausibility was found to facilitate revision without fully eliminating garden paths, in line with various revision models. The findings support the view of a sentence processing system relying heavily on syntactic information, with semantic information playing a weaker role both in initial analysis and during revision, thus supporting serial, syntax-first models and ranked-parallel models relying on structural criteria

    Inclusive Electron-Nucleus Scattering at Large Momentum Transfer

    Inclusive electron scattering is measured with 4.045 GeV incident beam energy from C, Fe and Au targets. The measured energy transfers and angles correspond to a kinematic range for Bjorken x>1x > 1 and momentum transfers from Q2=1−7(GeV/c)2Q^2 = 1 - 7 (GeV/c)^2. When analyzed in terms of the y-scaling function the data show for the first time an approach to scaling for values of the initial nucleon momenta significantly greater than the nuclear matter Fermi-momentum (i.e. >0.3> 0.3 GeV/c).Comment: 5 pages TEX, 5 Postscript figures also available at http://www.krl.caltech.edu/preprints/OAP.htm

    Overlap functions in correlation methods and quasifree nucleon knockout from 16^{16}O

    The cross sections of the (e,eâ€ČNe,e'N) and (Îł,p\gamma,p) reactions on 16^{16}O are calculated, for the transitions to the 1/2−1/2^{-} ground state and the first 3/2−3/2^{-} excited state of the residual nucleus, using single-particle overlap functions obtained on the basis of one-body density matrices within different correlation methods. The electron-induced one-nucleon knockout reaction is treated within a nonrelativistic DWIA framework. The theoretical treatment of the (Îł,p\gamma,p) reaction includes both contributions of the direct knockout mechanism and of meson-exchange currents. The results are sensitive to details of the different overlap functions. The consistent analysis of the reaction cross sections and the comparison with the experimental data make it possible to study the nucleon--nucleon correlation effects.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, 5 Postscript figures, submitted to PR
