Aspirin Use in Children for Fever or Viral Syndromes
Aspirin should not be used to treat acute febrile viral illness in children. (Strength of Recommendation [SOR]: C, based on case- control studies). Although no causal link has been proven, data from case-control and historic cohort studies demonstrate an association between aspirin use and Reye syndrome
Variation of Area-to-Mass-Ratio of HAMR Space Debris Objects
An unexpected space debris population has been detected in 2004 Schildknecht
et al. (2003, 2004) with the unique properties of a very high area-to-mass
ratio (HAMR) Schildknecht et al. (2005a). Ever since it has been tried to
investigate the dynamical properties of those objects further. The orbits of
those objects are heavily perturbed by the effect of direct radiation pressure.
Unknown attitude motion complicates orbit prediction. The area-to-mass ratio of
the objects seems to be not stable over time. Only sparse optical data is
available for those objects in drift orbits. The current work uses optical
observations of five HAMR objects, observed over several years and investigates
the variation of their area-to-mass ratio and orbital parameters. A normalized
orbit determination setup has been established and validated with two low and
two of the high ratio objects, to ensure, that comparable orbits over longer
time spans are determined even with sparse optical data.Comment: 10 pages, accepted Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society,

On the construction of model Hamiltonians for adiabatic quantum computation and its application to finding low energy conformations of lattice protein models
In this report, we explore the use of a quantum optimization algorithm for
obtaining low energy conformations of protein models. We discuss mappings
between protein models and optimization variables, which are in turn mapped to
a system of coupled quantum bits. General strategies are given for constructing
Hamiltonians to be used to solve optimization problems of
physical/chemical/biological interest via quantum computation by adiabatic
evolution. As an example, we implement the Hamiltonian corresponding to the
Hydrophobic-Polar (HP) model for protein folding. Furthermore, we present an
approach to reduce the resulting Hamiltonian to two-body terms gearing towards
an experimental realization.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figure
Allele frequencies of hemojuvelin gene (HJV) I222N and G320V missense mutations in white and African American subjects from the general Alabama population
BACKGROUND: Homozygosity or compound heterozygosity for coding region mutations of the hemojuvelin gene (HJV) in whites is a cause of early age-of-onset iron overload (juvenile hemochromatosis), and of hemochromatosis phenotypes in some young or middle-aged adults. HJV coding region mutations have also been identified recently in African American primary iron overload and control subjects. Primary iron overload unexplained by typical hemochromatosis-associated HFE genotypes is common in white and black adults in Alabama, and HJV I222N and G320V were detected in a white Alabama juvenile hemochromatosis index patient. Thus, we estimated the frequency of the HJV missense mutations I222N and G320V in adult whites and African Americans from Alabama general population convenience samples. METHODS: We evaluated the genomic DNA of 241 Alabama white and 124 African American adults who reported no history of hemochromatosis or iron overload to detect HJV missense mutations I222N and G320V using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. Analysis for HJV I222N was performed in 240 whites and 124 African Americans. Analysis for HJV G320V was performed in 241 whites and 118 African Americans. RESULTS: One of 240 white control subjects was heterozygous for HJV I222N; she was also heterozygous for HFE C282Y, but had normal serum iron measures and bone marrow iron stores. HJV I222N was not detected in 124 African American subjects. HJV G320V was not detected in 241 white or 118 African American subjects. CONCLUSIONS: HJV I222N and G320V are probably uncommon causes or modifiers of primary iron overload in adult whites and African Americans in Alabama. Double heterozygosity for HJV I222N and HFE C282Y may not promote increased iron absorption
The Solutions of the NLS Equations with Self-Consistent Sources
We construct the generalized Darboux transformation with arbitrary functions
in time for the AKNS equation with self-consistent sources (AKNSESCS)
which, in contrast with the Darboux transformation for the AKNS equation,
provides a non-auto-B\"{a}cklund transformation between two AKNSESCSs with
different degrees of sources. The formula for N-times repeated generalized
Darboux transformation is proposed. By reduction the generalized Darboux
transformation with arbitrary functions in time for the Nonlinear
Schr\"{o}dinger equation with self-consistent sources (NLSESCS) is obtained and
enables us to find the dark soliton, bright soliton and positon solutions for
NLSESCS and NLSESCS. The properties of these solution are analyzed.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical

Tidal decay and orbital circularization in close-in two-planet systems
The motion of two planets around a Sun-like star under the combined effects
of mutual interaction and tidal dissipation is investigated. The secular
behaviour of the system is analyzed using two different approaches. First, we
solve the exact equations of motion through the numerical simulation of the
system evolution. In addition to the orbital decay and circularization, we show
that the final configuration of the system is affected by the shrink of the
inner orbit. Our second approach consist in the analysis of the stationary
solutions of mean equations of motion based on a Hamiltonian formalism. We
consider the case of a hot super-Earth planet with a more massive outer
companion. As a real example, the CoRoT-7 system is analyzed solving the exact
and mean equations of motion. The star-planet tidal interaction produces
orbital decay and circularization of the orbit of CoRoT-7b. In addition, the
long-term tidal evolution is such that the eccentricity of CoRoT-7c is also
circularized and a pair of final circular orbits is obtained. A curve in the
space of eccentricities can be constructed through the computation of
stationary solutions of mean equations including dissipation. The application
to CoRoT-7 system shows that the stationary curve agrees with the result of
numerical simulations of exact equations. A similar investigation performed in
a super-Earth-Jupiter two-planet system shows that the doubly circular state is
accelerated when there is a significant orbital migration of the inner planet,
in comparison with previous results were migration is neglected.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 10 pages, 13 figure
UNC93B1 Mediates Host Resistance to Infection with Toxoplasma gondii
UNC93B1 associates with Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) 3, TLR7 and TLR9, mediating their translocation from the endoplasmic reticulum to the endolysosome, hence allowing proper activation by nucleic acid ligands. We found that the triple deficient ‘3d’ mice, which lack functional UNC93B1, are hyper-susceptible to infection with Toxoplasma gondii. We established that while mounting a normal systemic pro-inflammatory response, i.e. producing abundant MCP-1, IL-6, TNFα and IFNγ, the 3d mice were unable to control parasite replication. Nevertheless, infection of reciprocal bone marrow chimeras between wild-type and 3d mice with T. gondii demonstrated a primary role of hemopoietic cell lineages in the enhanced susceptibility of UNC93B1 mutant mice. The protective role mediated by UNC93B1 to T. gondii infection was associated with impaired IL-12 responses and delayed IFNγ by spleen cells. Notably, in macrophages infected with T. gondii, UNC93B1 accumulates on the parasitophorous vacuole. Furthermore, upon in vitro infection the rate of tachyzoite replication was enhanced in non-activated macrophages carrying mutant UNC93B1 as compared to wild type gene. Strikingly, the role of UNC93B1 on intracellular parasite growth appears to be independent of TLR function. Altogether, our results reveal a critical role for UNC93B1 on induction of IL-12/IFNγ production as well as autonomous control of Toxoplasma replication by macrophages
Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physics of Currents in Queuing Networks
We consider a stable open queuing network as a steady non-equilibrium system
of interacting particles. The network is completely specified by its underlying
graphical structure, type of interaction at each node, and the Markovian
transition rates between nodes. For such systems, we ask the question ``What is
the most likely way for large currents to accumulate over time in a network
?'', where time is large compared to the system correlation time scale. We
identify two interesting regimes. In the first regime, in which the
accumulation of currents over time exceeds the expected value by a small to
moderate amount (moderate large deviation), we find that the large-deviation
distribution of currents is universal (independent of the interaction details),
and there is no long-time and averaged over time accumulation of particles
(condensation) at any nodes. In the second regime, in which the accumulation of
currents over time exceeds the expected value by a large amount (severe large
deviation), we find that the large-deviation current distribution is sensitive
to interaction details, and there is a long-time accumulation of particles
(condensation) at some nodes. The transition between the two regimes can be
described as a dynamical second order phase transition. We illustrate these
ideas using the simple, yet non-trivial, example of a single node with
feedback.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figure
