    MELK-a conserved kinase: functions, signaling, cancer, and controversy.

    Maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase (MELK) is a highly conserved serine/threonine kinase initially found to be expressed in a wide range of early embryonic cellular stages, and as a result has been implicated in embryogenesis and cell cycle control. Recent evidence has identified a broader spectrum of tissue expression pattern for this kinase than previously appreciated. MELK is expressed in several human cancers and stem cell populations. Unique spatial and temporal patterns of expression within these tissues suggest that MELK plays a prominent role in cell cycle control, cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell migration, cell renewal, embryogenesis, oncogenesis, and cancer treatment resistance and recurrence. These findings have important implications for our understanding of development, disease, and cancer therapeutics. Furthermore understanding MELK signaling may elucidate an added dimension of stem cell control

    FLIAT, an object-relational GIS tool for flood impact assessment in Flanders, Belgium

    Floods can cause damage to transportation and energy infrastructure, disrupt the delivery of services, and take a toll on public health, sometimes even causing significant loss of life. Although scientists widely stress the compelling need for resilience against extreme events under a changing climate, tools for dealing with expected hazards lag behind. Not only does the socio-economic, ecologic and cultural impact of floods need to be considered, but the potential disruption of a society with regard to priority adaptation guidelines, measures, and policy recommendations need to be considered as well. The main downfall of current impact assessment tools is the raster approach that cannot effectively handle multiple metadata of vital infrastructures, crucial buildings, and vulnerable land use (among other challenges). We have developed a powerful cross-platform flood impact assessment tool (FLIAT) that uses a vector approach linked to a relational database using open source program languages, which can perform parallel computation. As a result, FLIAT can manage multiple detailed datasets, whereby there is no loss of geometrical information. This paper describes the development of FLIAT and the performance of this tool

    Planning for shortages? Net present value analysis for a deteriorating item with partial backlogging

    This paper develops inventory models to help answer strategic questions concerning whether planning for shortages offers financial benefits. A production-inventory system producing a deteriorating product in batches at a finite production rate with partial backordering is considered. Customers pay a deposit when placing a backorder. Backordered items receive a discount on the sales price. As lost sales may lead to customers not returning, the demand rate may depend on the fraction of lost sales. We develop a cash-flow based profit maximising Net Present Value (NPV) model without the inventory cost parameters commonly used in this context: unit holding cost, unit backorder cost, unit deterioration cost, and unit lost sales cost. The model finds the optimal inventory policy just like NPV models that discount the traditional parameters but has the advantage of not needing to estimate the value of the traditional parameters. It is shown that in models based on discounting the traditional parameters, the parameters are not exogenously determinable but are non-trivial functions of non-financial endogenous system parameters such as the production rate, annual demand rate, and backorder rate. Extensive numerical experiments illustrate how cash-flow NPV models provide insights into the value of planning for shortages and strategic choices about the design of the production-inventory system. It also provides insight into the classical problem of how to interpret unit backorder cost and unit lost sales cost. The study indicates that these insights cannot be reliably obtained from NPV models based on discounting unit backorder costs and unit lost sales costs.<br/

    A reinforcement sensitivity perspective on adolescents' susceptibility to the influence of soap opera viewing on alcohol attitudes

    Previous research found support for an association between exposure to alcohol-related media content and alcohol attitudes, intentions and behavior. Nevertheless, research on what makes young people susceptible to the occurrence of this relationship is scarce. The current study examined the behavioral activation (BAS) and inhibition system (BIS) as moderators of the relationship between soap opera viewing and alcohol attitudes. A cross-sectional survey was carried out among a sample of 922 adolescents (M-age=14.96years, SD=.85, 56% girls). Regression analyses showed no association between total television viewing and alcohol attitudes, but did confirm that soap opera viewing is associated with positive attitudes towards alcohol use. Moderation analyses indicated that BAS did not moderate this relationship, while BIS did; the relationship between soap opera viewing and positive attitudes toward alcohol was only significant for adolescents with a low BIS-profile. These results provide support for the premise that an elevated BIS protects adolescents from the effect of soap opera viewing frequency on their alcohol attitudes

    Response Rates in the European Social Survey: Increasing, Decreasing, or a Matter of Fieldwork Efforts?

    Response rates are declining increasing the risk of nonresponse error. The reasons for this decline are multiple: the rise of online surveys, mobile phones, and information requests, societal changes, greater awareness of privacy issues, etc. To combat this decline, fieldwork efforts have become increasingly intensive: widespread use of respondent incentives, advance letters, and an increased number of contact attempts. In addition, complex fieldwork strategies such as adaptive call scheduling or responsive designs have been implemented. The additional efforts to counterbalance nonresponse complicate the measurement of the increased difficulty of contacting potential respondents and convincing them to cooperate. To observe developments in response rates we use the first seven rounds of the European Social Survey, a biennial face-to-face survey. Despite some changes to the fieldwork efforts in some countries (choice of survey agency, available sample frame, incentives, number of contact attempts), many characteristics have been stable: effective sample size, (contact and) survey mode, and questionnaire design. To control for the different country composition in different rounds, we use a multilevel model with countries as level 2 units and response rates in each country-year combination as level 1 units. The results show a declining trend, although only round 7 has a significant negative effect
