Presidential Debates or Political Theatre?

This essay investigates the current condition of the United States presidential debate structure. Research has shown that candidates participating in these debates often direct most of their attention to form the most bold and catchy one-liners in order to capture the hearts and minds of the American people. As a result, citizens are not gaining enough knowledge of their presidential candidates. The focus on personal attacks and grand statements puts policy and campaign strategy out of the spotlight. Candidates are given around five minutes to address a serious question about our nation. In a perfect world with no interruptions this is still not nearly enough time to effectively explain a stance on immigration, healthcare, etc. Are the American people getting valuable campaign information from these debates or are we just watching political theatre? Kracht van mensen:verslag van een zoektocht naar perspectieven voor de aanpak van langdurig verzuim bij de politie

Deze rapportage is resultaat van een jaar intensief samenwerken en kennis delen, gericht op het geven van een zo precies en helder mogelijk beeld van de situatie van negen mensen die te maken hebben met langdurig arbeidsverzuim. De negen verhalen staan niet op zichzelf, maar vertonen overeenkomsten. Aandacht voor verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen de unieke verhalen geeft zicht op grondpatronen die verankerd blijken in het handelen van leden van de politieorganisatie. Met het expliciteren van die grondpatronen zoeken we aanknopingspunten voor gesprek in de organisatie over structurele verbetering van de aanpak van langdurig verzuim

Human resource maatwerk:over de noodzaak van ontwikkeling en innovatie

Als mensen werken, verbinden zij zich in hun handelen aan de kerntaak van de organisatie. Met hun werk helpen zij die kerntaak direct of indirect te realiseren. In de verbinding tussen werkende en organisatie is het zaak een goede balans te vinden tussen de persoonlijke ontwikkeling van mensen, het werk dat ze doen en de bijdrage die ze daarmee leveren aan de ontwikkeling van de organisatie. Dit is het werkterrein van HRM. Dit werkterrein is, zeker in de tijd waarin we nu leven, voortdurend in verandering. Niet alleen de aard van de arbeidscontracten verandert, ook de aard van het werk zelf. Werkorganisaties worden opener, en de diensteneconomie vraag om klantgericht werken. Bovendien wordt de betekenis van arbeid in het leven van mensen meer divers. Anciënniteit in de relatie tussen werkgever en werknemer hebben aan gewicht ingeboet. Van werkenden wordt tegenwoordig gevraagd competent te zijn, in staat tot het aangaan van relaties, deze te onderhouden en daarin zelfstandig, maar niet alleen, te functioneren. Maatwerk, ontwikkeling en zeggenschap zijn hierin sleutelbegrippen. Dat vraagt ook het nodige van het management. Het management werkt dan niet langer op basis van beheersing, maar op basis van vertrouwen, op gezag in plaats van macht. Deze veranderingen op het arbeidsterrein hebben grote gevolgen. Ze zijn zo drastisch, dat HRM de boot gaat missen als zij zich tot haar traditionele terrein beperkt. HRM concentreert zich nog vaak op de vaste kern van werknemers terwijl de differentiatie op de arbeidsmarkt vraagt om aandacht voor de groep werkenden als geheel. HRM moet verduurzamen. Interface Reflections

This paper supports the claim that the autonomy-of-syntax thesis must be given up in favour of a model in which the computational system is allowed to interface with discourse- related phenomena in order to arrive at a complete interpretation. The evidence for this claim is derived mainly from the area of pronominal reference, an area of crucial interest for the interface discussion since pronouns are elements subject to variable interpretations, so that utterances containing them cannot be interpreted merely in terms of their truth- conditional semantics. I first discuss the pro-drop parameter and its putative interaction with pragmatics. I then turn to overt pronouns and their characterisation in Government & Binding theory. The various types of pronouns are discussed, and it is concluded that, contrary to what is implied by Principle B of the Binding Theory, the class of pronouns is non-unitary. Definite NPs behave similarly, so that both classes are basically ambiguous, with an in-built appeal to discourse factors. More evidence is drawn from the area of presupposition and quantifier-variable binding. The final section contains some speculations regarding the relation between language and thought

Resilience in the event of long-term absenteeism

Long-term absenteeism is a persistent problem in the police organisation in the Netherlands. Around 4% of staff has been absent for over three months. For the National Police's Enhancing Professional Resilience programme, we conducted research into opportunities for increasing people's resilience when returning to work after such a long period of absenteeism. This research provides suggestions for dealing with the problem of long-term absenteeism effectively. The following issues turned out to be important: the scope of employees of their reintegration process, reciprocity in the relationship between line manager and police employee, greater knowledge of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its causes and finally, dealing with diversity in the organisation in an active manner

Structure-function relationship between homogalacturonan pectins and intestinal immunity:Microbiota-(in)dependent effects on the gastrointestinal immune barrier

Pectins are dietary fibers that have been recognized to reduce the incidence of lifestyle related disease. Pectins can contain several chemical structures, including homogalacturonan regions which consist of a galacturonan backbone. These galacturonans can be methyl-esterified causing a difference in degree and distribution of methyl-esters in pectins. It is known that pectins can influence the intestinal immune system, but which specific structures are responsible for these effects is unknown. Therefore, the immunomodulatory role of the degree of methyl-esterification (DM) and the distribution of methyl-esters in homogalacturonan pectins on the intestinal immune system was investigated. Current studies demonstrate that low DM pectins and pectins with an intermediate DM and blockwise distribution of methyl-esters inhibit the activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2-1 and prevent the development of TLR2-mediated inflammation of the small intestine in mice. Besides, administration of a low DM pectin that contains a more blockwise distribution of methyl-esters and intermediate DM pectins influence T cell immunity and the microbiota composition in the intestine of healthy mice. In addition, pectins inhibit the growth of Citrobacter rodentium and prevent inflammation caused by this pathogen in the large intestine. These effects of pectins on C. rodentium were independent of structural differences. In conclusion, homogalacturonan pectins can influence the intestinal immune system through direct effects on TLR2, modulation of intestinal microbiota composition or by inhibiting the growth of enteric pathogens in the intestine. The degree and distribution of methyl-esters of pectins appear to play an important role in these effects

Over werk, trauma’s en herstel

Het Ro theater trekt het land door met de voorstelling ‘Leger’, die gaat over soldaten op missies en over wat er met hen gebeurt als ze op Vliegbasis Eindhoven landen en weer terugkeren in de samenleving. De schrijver van de voorstelling, Rik van den Bos vertelt: “Ze hebben iets meegemaakt wat ze aan niemand kunnen uitleggen, zijn terug gekomen en merken: ik pas hier niet meer, mijn vrouw, mijn vrienden, mijn ouders begrijpen me niet. Die wond wilde ik in de voorstelling bloot leggen en aan niet-militairen laten zien.” (Volkskrant 13 maart 2015, V12). Het verhaal over deze voorstelling vertaalde ik naar de situatie bij politiemensen, die ook heftige gebeurtenissen meemaken en daar niet altijd ongeschonden uitkomen. In onderzoek naar langdurig verzuim bij de Nationale Politie ben ik deze mensen tegen gekomen
