Sacred rubble and humble shelters: German church building after the Second World War

    Get PDF
This article centres on the cultural politics behind the feverish construction of new houses of worship in West Germany, as well as the restoration of damaged cathedrals and churches, in the first two decades after 1945. At issue is how and why ecclesiastical architecture took on heightened cultural significance at the time, attracting a star-studded group of international architects. After the war, church-building resumed its leading historical role from before the Industrial Revolution as the avant-garde of innovative international architecture, although its comeback has been largely overlooked by architectural and cultural historians alike. While these changes reflected broader international trends, the German situation took on special significance in light of the Nazi legacy of defeat, destruction and dislocation, as well as the pressing need to fabricate new churches for survivors and the millions of expellees arriving in western Germany. Discussions of ecclesiastical architecture therefore touched on broader issues of German history, identity and Christian renewal, and the very form of these houses of worship reflected a unique blend of avant-garde architecture and Christian theology in the aftermath of war

    A Problem Solving Medicine Wheel

We use a Medicine Wheel to describe our professional understanding of the nature, teaching and learning of problem solving. We developed this understanding via a professional learning project over several years, and based on our observations of children\u27s efforts and struggles to solve rich and open-ended mathematical problems

Disrupting gifted teenager’s mathematical identity with epistemological messiness

Mathematics is widely perceived as a universal and uncontested discipline, contrary to the philosophy of mathematics literature. Other researchers have considered the potential role of philosophy in school, but there is little work with gifted students engaged with issues concerning the nature of mathematics. We developed a philosophy of mathematics unit intended to enlarge gifted students’ perceptions of the nature of mathematics by exposing the uncritical and tidy rendering of mathematics within school math. Using a narrative methodology, we attended to gifted student’s students’ stories of relationship with mathematics, based on the premise that a person’s relationship with mathematics is inextricably woven together with their identity. In this paper, we will focus on the experiences of three gifted teenagers during our philosophy of mathematics unit. We found that these students were disrupted and compartmentalized their school math and philosophy of mathematics experiences and beliefs. We conclude that substantive experiences with the nature of mathematics should be a regular component of school math

Game Drives of the Aralo-Caspian Region

    Get PDF
Game drives of the Aralo-Caspian region is a translated and revised edition of Yagodin’s Strelovidnye Planirovki Ustyurta, originally published in Tashkent in 1991. Based on extensive fieldwork, the volume investigates arrow-shaped structures used for hunting in remote areas of Central Asia between the seventh and 14th centuries AD. This classic study of game drives remains one of the most significant works in Ustyurt archaeology and one of the few that integrates geoarchaeological, ecological and ethnographic data. This first English edition of Game drives of the Aralo-Caspian region has been amended with new material, including the study of satellite imagery, and enriched with many new illustrations

Children\u27s Oncology Group Hospital Membership and Survival of Pediatric Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) predominates in children ages 0-14 years and has an excellent prognosis for cure with 5-year survival exceeding 90% in the United States. However, not all children experience such positive outcomes. The purpose of this quantitative, retrospective cohort study was to evaluate differences in survival of ALL among children who reside in the 32-county Texas-Mexico border region. While factors such as poverty and health insurance have been strongly associated with poorer cancer outcomes, additional factors such as geographic isolation and treatment disparities are not as well-documented in children. This study examined the association between use of Texas Children\u27s Oncology Group (COG) pediatric research facilities and survival among children in Texas diagnosed with ALL. This study used cancer incidence data 1995-2009 from the Texas Cancer Registry. Differences in survival and use of COG facilities were investigated between children who reside within the 32-county Texas-Mexico border region and the combined remaining 222 Texas counties. Chi-square was used to analyze area of residence, gender, race/ethnicity, and poverty status between COG and non-COG reported cases. Logistic regression was used to examine ALL survival differences between COG and non-COG facilities controlling for multiple variables. COG affiliation alone was not a significant predictor of survival. An interaction between race/ethnicity, region, poverty status, and COG facility affiliation was observed as a significant predictor of poorer survival. The results of this study have the potential to promote positive social change by implementing interventions addressing access to equivalent pediatric cancer care in the 32-county Texas-Mexico border area
