    Laser Mobile Mapping Standards and Applications in Transportation

    This report describes the work that was done to support the development of a chapter for the INDOT Survey Manual on Mobile Mapping. The work includes experiments that were done, data that was collected, analysis that was carried out, and conclusions that were drawn about accuracy of Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanning (MTLS) systems. The resulting Manual chapter, located in the appendix, defines standards and procedures for preparing, collecting, editing, delivering, exploiting, and archiving electronic mapping data that is created for Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The purpose of the standards and procedures within this manual is to obtain statewide uniformity within the INDOT combined Aerial/Ground Survey process, to establish and maintain MTLS Standards for INDOT and contracted consultants, and allow for all of the project data to be effectively managed from conception to completion. These standards apply to all projects delivered to INDOT by contracted consulting firms, or exchanged internally within INDOT or between state agencies. The standards and procedures are the result of mobile terrestrial laser scanning surveys of two test sites - one urban and one freeway - created for this project. After establishing reference control points on the sites, each site was surveyed by four mobile terrestrial laser scanning vendors. The results from the vendor data over the test sites, in addition to information in published literature, are the basis for the specifications manual.     Modeling Speed Adjustment Behavior of Merging Vehicles at Urban Expressway Merging Sections

    AbstractThis paper modeled speed adjustment behavior of merging vehicles by using video data collected at two merging sections on urban expressway in Nagoya City, Japan. The results showed that the longer acceleration lane results in a higher acceleration rate of merging vehicles. And the denser mainline traffic causes a lower that of merging vehicles. In addition, the leading and following time to collision (TTCL and TTCF) were adopted as variables. It is found that if TTCL is negative, merging vehicles increase their acceleration rate. By contrast, if TTCL becomes positive and the collision can happen, merging vehicles tend to reduce acceleration rate to avoid the collision with leading mainline vehicles. In case of TTCF, the positive signs of coefficients indicate that when following mainline vehicles run faster than merging vehicles, they increase their acceleration rate to avoid collision with following mainline vehicles. Furthermore, the validation results suggest a promising applicability of the developed models

    Accelerating Network Traffic Analytics Using Query-DrivenVisualization

    Realizing operational analytics solutions where large and complex data must be analyzed in a time-critical fashion entails integrating many different types of technology. This paper focuses on an interdisciplinary combination of scientific data management and visualization/analysis technologies targeted at reducing the time required for data filtering, querying, hypothesis testing and knowledge discovery in the domain of network connection data analysis. We show that use of compressed bitmap indexing can quickly answer queries in an interactive visual data analysis application, and compare its performance with two alternatives for serial and parallel filtering/querying on 2.5 billion records worth of network connection data collected over a period of 42 weeks. Our approach to visual network connection data exploration centers on two primary factors: interactive ad-hoc and multiresolution query formulation and execution over n dimensions and visual display of then-dimensional histogram results. This combination is applied in a case study to detect a distributed network scan and to then identify the set of remote hosts participating in the attack. Our approach is sufficiently general to be applied to a diverse set of data understanding problems as well as used in conjunction with a diverse set of analysis and visualization tools

    Meta-analysis of the impact of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors on incident diabetes and cardiovascular outcomes

    Abstract Background Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs) have been shown to reduce incident type 2 diabetes but their impact on cardiovascular (CV) disease remains controversial. We sought to identify the overall impact of AGIs with respect to incident type 2 diabetes in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and CV outcomes in those with IGT or type 2 diabetes. Methods We used PubMed and SCOPUS to identify randomized controlled trials reporting the incidence of type 2 diabetes and/or CV outcomes that had compared AGIs with placebo in populations with IGT or type 2 diabetes, with or without established CV disease. Eligible studies were required to have ≥ 500 participants and/or ≥ 100 endpoints of interest. Meta-analyses of available trial data were performed using random effects models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident type 2 diabetes and CV outcomes. Results Of ten trials identified, three met our inclusion criteria for incident type 2 diabetes and four were eligible for CV outcomes. The overall HR (95% CI) comparing AGI with placebo for incident type 2 diabetes was 0.77 (0.67–0.88), p < 0.0001, and for CV outcomes was 0.98 (0.89–1.10), p = 0.85. There was little to no heterogeneity between studies, with I2 values of 0.03% (p = 0.43) and 0% (p = 0.79) for the two outcomes respectively. Conclusions Allocation of people with IGT to an AGI significantly reduced their risk of incident type 2 diabetes by 23%, whereas in those with IGT or type 2 diabetes the impact on CV outcomes was neutral
