Stem cell therapy in necrotizing enterocolitis: Current state and future directions
Stem cell therapy is a promising treatment modality for necrotizing enterocolitis. Among the many promising stem cells identified to date, it is likely that mesenchymal stem cells will be the most useful and practical cell-based therapies for this condition. Using acellular components such as exosomes or other paracrine mediators are promising as well. Multiple mechanisms are likely at play in the positive effects provided by these cells, and further research is underway to further elucidate these effects
Negative pressures in full-scale distribution system: field investigation, modelling, estimation of intrusion volumes and risk for public health
International audienceVarious investigations encompassing microbial characterization of external sources of contamination (soil and trenchwater surrounding water mains, flooded air-valve vaults), field pressure monitoring, and hydraulic and transient analyses were conducted in the same distribution system where two epidemiological studies showing an increase in gastrointestinal illness for people drinking tap water were conducted in the 1990's. Interesting results include the detection of microorganisms indicators of fecal contamination in all external sources investigated but at a higher frequency in the water from flooded air-valve vaults, and the recording of 18 negative pressure events in the distribution system during a 17-month monitoring period. Transient analysis of this large and complex distribution system was challenging and highlighted the need to consider field pressure data in the process

Attentional demand influences strategies for encoding into visual working memory
Visual selective attention and visual working memory (WM) share the same
capacity-limited resources. We investigated whether and how participants can
cope with a task in which these 2 mechanisms interfere. The task required
participants to scan an array of 9 objects in order to select the target
locations and to encode the items presented at these locations into WM (1 to 5
shapes). Determination of the target locations required either few attentional
resources (“popout condition”) or an attention-demanding serial search (“non
pop-out condition”). Participants were able to achieve high memory performance
in all stimulation conditions but, in the non popout conditions, this came at
the cost of additional processing time. Both empirical evidence and subjective
reports suggest that participants invested the additional time in memorizing the
locations of all target objects prior to the encoding of their shapes into WM.
Thus, they seemed to be unable to interleave the steps of search with those of
encoding. We propose that the memory for target locations substitutes for
perceptual pop-out and thus may be the key component that allows for flexible
coping with the common processing limitations of visual WM and attention. The
findings have implications for understanding how we cope with real-life
situations in which the demands on visual attention and WM occur
simultaneously

Letter processing and font information during reading: beyond distinctiveness, where vision meets design
Letter identification is a critical front end of the
reading process. In general, conceptualizations of the identification process have emphasized arbitrary sets of distinctive features. However, a richer view of letter processing incorporates principles from the field of type design, including an emphasis on uniformities across letters within a font. The importance of uniformities is supported by a small body of research indicating that consistency of font increases letter identification efficiency. We review design concepts and the relevant literature, with the goal of stimulating further thinking about letter processing during reading
Risk response strategies for collaborative university-industry R&D funded programs
Universities are centers of knowledge in our societies and their role when it comes to innovation has become more important over the years. Companies have several reasons to engage in research collaborations with universities, namely to gain access to innovative technologies. University-Industry R&D collaborations are expected to play an important role in regional economies, and to fulfill the industry’s demand for innovative products, technologies and processes. However, the knowledge on what are the potential risks resulting from these collaborations and the risk response strategies to reduce the negative risk impacts and to enhance positive risk impacts is still limited. Nanofabrication with Pulsed Lasers
An overview of pulsed laser-assisted methods for nanofabrication, which are currently developed in our Institute (LP3), is presented. The methods compass a variety of possibilities for material nanostructuring offered by laser–matter interactions and imply either the nanostructuring of the laser-illuminated surface itself, as in cases of direct laser ablation or laser plasma-assisted treatment of semiconductors to form light-absorbing and light-emitting nano-architectures, as well as periodic nanoarrays, or laser-assisted production of nanoclusters and their controlled growth in gaseous or liquid medium to form nanostructured films or colloidal nanoparticles. Nanomaterials synthesized by laser-assisted methods have a variety of unique properties, not reproducible by any other route, and are of importance for photovoltaics, optoelectronics, biological sensing, imaging and therapeutics
