The cranking formula and the spurious behaviour of the mass parameters
We discuss some aspects of the approach of the mass parameters by means of
the simple cranking model. In particular, it is well known that the numerical
application of this formula is often subject to ambiguities or contradictions.
It is found that these problems are induced by the presence of two derivatives
in the formula. To overcome these problems, we state a useful ansatz and we
develop a number of simple arguments which tend to justify the removal of these
terms. As soon as this is done, the formula becomes simpler and easier to
interpret. In this respect, it is shown how the shell effects affect the mass

Spin distribution of nuclear levels using static path approximation with random-phase approximation
We present a thermal and quantum-mechanical treatment of nuclear rotation
using the formalism of static path approximation (SPA) plus random-phase
approximation (RPA). Naive perturbation theory fails because of the presence of
zero-frequency modes due to dynamical symmetry breaking. Such modes lead to
infrared divergences. We show that composite zero-frequency excitations are
properly treated within the collective coordinate method. The resulting
perturbation theory is free from infrared divergences. Without the assumption
of individual random spin vectors, we derive microscopically the spin
distribution of the level density. The moment of inertia is thereby related to
the spin-cutoff parameter in the usual way. Explicit calculations are performed
for 56^Fe; various thermal properties are discussed. In particular, we
demonstrate that the increase of the moment of inertia with increasing

Anomalous rotational-alignment in N=Z nuclei and residual neutron-proton interaction
Recent experiments have demonstrated that the rotational-alignment for the
nuclei in the mass-80 region is considerably delayed as compared to the
neighboring nuclei. We investigate whether this observation can be
understood by a known component of nuclear residual interactions. It is shown
that the quadrupole-pairing interaction, which explains many of the delays
known in rare-earth nuclei, does not produce the substantial delay observed for
these nuclei. However, the residual neutron-proton interaction which is
conjectured to be relevant for nuclei is shown to be quite important in

Description of superdeformed nuclei in the interacting boson model
The interacting boson model is extended to describe the spectroscopy of
superdeformed bands. Microscopic structure of the model in the second minimum
is discussed and superdeformed bosons are introduced as the new building
blocks. Solutions of a quadrupole Hamiltonian are implemented through the
expansion method. Effects of the quadrupole parameters on dynamic moment of
inertia and electric quadrupole transition rates are discussed and the results
are used in a description of superdeformed bands in the Hg-Pb and Gd-Dy

Lowest-lying Tetra-Quark Hadrons in Anisotropic Lattice QCD
We present a detailed study of lowest-lying hadrons in
quenched improved anisotropic lattice QCD. Using the and
diquark-antidiquark local and smeared operators, we attempt to isolate the
signal for and states in two flavour
QCD. In the chiral limit of light-quark mass region, the lowest scalar
state is found to have a mass, MeV, which is slightly
lower than the experimentally observed . The results from our
variational analysis do not indicate a signature of a tetraquark resonance in
I=1 and I=2 channels. After the chiral extrapolation the lowest
state is found to have a mass, MeV. We analysed the
static potential extracted form a tetraquark Wilson loop and illustrated
the behaviour of the state as a bound state, unbinding at some critical
diquark separation. From our analysis we conclude that scalar system
appears as a two-pion scattering state and that there is no spatially-localised
state in the light-quark mass region.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Contributions on lindane degradation by Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806
Cyanobacteria are able to tolerate, and even metabolize, moderate doses of organochlorine pesticides, such as lindane (¿-hexachlorocyclohexane), one of the most persistent and widely used in recent decades. Previous work showed that Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 degrades lindane and that, in the presence of the pesticide, microcystin synthesis is enhanced. In this work, using in silico approaches, we have identified in M. aeruginosa putative homologues of the lin genes, involved in lindane degradation in Sphingobium japonicum UT26S. Real-time RT-PCR assays showed that the putative linC gene was induced in the presence of 7 mg/L of lindane. Additionally, prxA, encoding a peroxiredoxin, and involved in oxidative stress response, was also induced when lindane was present. Taking into account these results, M. aeruginosa PCC 7806 may degrade lindane through a metabolic pathway involving a putative 2, 5-dichloro-2, 5-cyclohexadiene-1, 4-diol dehydrogenase encoded by a linC homologue. However, the low similarity of the other potential lin homologues suggest the existence of an alternative pathway different to that of heterotrophic microorganisms such as S. japonicum
Anharmonic properties of double giant dipole resonance
A systematic microscopic study of the anharmonic properties of the double
giant dipole resonance (DGDR) has been carried out, for the first time, for
nuclei with mass number spanning the whole mass table. It is concluded that
the corrections of the energy centroid of the and
components of the DGDR from its harmonic limit are negative, have a value of

Sustainable drainage systems: Helping people live with water
Sustainable drainage systems or ‘Suds’ are increasingly accepted as an effective means of ‘making space for water’, adapting to possible climate change and helping communities become more flood and drought resilient. This study explores potential shifts in perception and attitude through Suds installation, development and habituation. Attitudes and awareness in communities in the USA and UK, where Suds have been in place for some time, were compared and contrasted, examining any evolution of beliefs and practices and wider community resilience. The principal finding was that there existed a lack of understanding about the existence and function of Suds. The paper concludes that consultation regarding solutions during Suds planning and installation, and ongoing dialogue afterwards, could usefully be explored as a means to improve local awareness of and satisfaction with Suds and promote greater understanding of their function. This may in turn encourage behaviour change to improve longer-term functionality of Suds and increase community resilience to flooding and drought
Closed-flavor pi + J/psi and pi + Upsilon Cross Sections at Low Energies from Dipion Decays
The scale of low energy c-cbar and b-bbar cross sections on light hadrons is
of great importance to searches for the quark gluon plasma using the
heavy-quarkonium suppression signature. Unfortunately, little is known about
these near-threshold cross sections at present, and recent theoretical
estimates span many orders of magnitude. Here we use experimental data on the
four observed closed-flavor heavy quarkonium hadronic decays psi' -> pi pi
J/psi, Upsilon' -> pi pi Upsilon, Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon and Upsilon'' ->
pi pi Upsilon', combined with simple models of the transition amplitudes, to
estimate the pion scattering cross sections of c-cbar and b-bbar mesons near
threshold. Specifically we consider the closed-flavor reactions pi J/psi -> pi
psi', pi Upsilon -> pi Upsilon', pi Upsilon -> pi Upsilon'' and pi Upsilon' ->
pi Upsilon'' and their time-reversed analogues. Our results may be useful in
constraining theoretical models of the strong interactions of heavy quarkonia,
and can be systematically improved through future detailed studies of dipion
decays, notably psi' -> pi pi J/psi and Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Validation of metabolic syndrome using medical records in the SUN cohort
The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity of self
reported criteria of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) in the SUN (Seguimiento Universidad
de Navarra) cohort using their medical records as the gold standard. METHODS: We
selected 336 participants and we obtained MS related data according to Adult
Treatment Panel III (ATP III) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Then
we compared information on the self reported diagnosis of MS and MS diagnosed in
their medical records. We calculated the proportion of confirmed MS, the
proportion of confirmed non-MS and the intraclass correlation coefficients for
each component of the MS. RESULTS: From those 336 selected participants, we
obtained sufficient data in 172 participants to confirm or reject MS using ATP
III criteria. The proportion of confirmed MS was 91.2% (95% CI: 80.7- 97.1) and
the proportion of confirmed non-MS was 92.2% (95% CI: 85.7-96.4) using ATP III
criteria. The proportion of confirmed MS using IDF criteria was 100% (95% CI:
87.2-100) and the proportion of confirmed non-MS was 97.1% (95% CI: 85.1-99.9).
Kappa Index was 0.82 in the group diagnosed by ATP III criteria and 0.97 in the
group diagnosed by IDF criteria. Intraclass correlation coefficients for the
different component of MS were: 0.93 (IC 95%:0.91- 0.95) for BMI; 0.96 (IC 95%:
0.93-0.98) for waist circumference; 0.75 (IC 95%: 0.66-0.82) for fasting glucose;
0.50 (IC 95%:0.35-0.639) for HDL cholesterol; 0.78 (IC 95%: 0.70-0.84) for
triglycerides; 0.49 (IC 95%:0.34-0.61) for systolic blood pressure and 0.55 (IC
95%: 0.41-0.65) for diastolic blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Self-reported MS based
on self reported components of the SM in a Spanish cohort of university graduates
was sufficiently valid as to be used in epidemiological studies
