Shear induced drainage in foamy yield-stress fluids

    Get PDF
Shear induced drainage of a foamy yield stress fluid is investigated using MRI techniques. Whereas the yield stress of the interstitial fluid stabilizes the system at rest, a fast drainage is observed when a horizontal shear is imposed. It is shown that the sheared interstitial material behaves as a viscous fluid in the direction of gravity, the effective viscosity of which is controlled by shear in transient foam films between bubbles. Results provided for several bubble sizes are not captured by the R^2 scaling classically observed for liquid flow in particulate systems, such as foams and thus constitute a remarkable demonstration of the strong coupling of drainage flow and shear induced interstitial flow. Furthermore, foam films are found to be responsible for the unexpected arrest of drainage, thus trapping irreversibly a significant amount of interstitial liquid.Comment: Published in Physical Review Letters. http://prl.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v104/i12/e12830

CFD-DEM simulations of early turbulent solid–liquid mixing: Prediction of suspension curve and just-suspended speed

Solid–liquid mixing as a unit operation still faces considerable challenges, notably regarding the prediction of the impeller speed required to suspend the particles (Njs), the fraction of suspended solids and the homogeneity of the suspension at a given speed. In this work, we extend to the turbulent regime, by means of large eddy simulation (LES), a CFD-DEM model developed recently in our group for solid–liquid mixing. The resulting model is used to study the mixing of glass particles in a baffled stirred tank equipped with a down-pumping pitched blade turbine. Various characteristics of the liquid dynamics as well as the distribution and motion of the solids are investigated. The fraction of suspended solid particles predicted by the model is validated against experimental data obtained via the pressure gauge technique (PGT). Two new methods to calculate the fraction of suspended particles in a Euler–Lagrange simulation, the so-called Lagrangian suspended fraction analysis (LSFA) and the decorrelated fraction analysis (DFA) techniques are introduced. The results obtained with these two methods, as well as with many others taken from the literature, are compared to the Zwietering correlation and to the results obtained by the PGT. It is found that some techniques proposed in the literature, namely the local concentration, the power consumption and the transient solids concentration analysis techniques, cannot be applied adequately in this case. On the other hand, the LSFA, DFA and PGT techniques are observed to predict accurately the fraction of suspended solids when compared to experimental PGT data

Hydro-Mechanical Modelling of Multiphase Flow in Coalbed by Computational Homogenization

peer reviewedA multiscale model is developed for the modelling of coalbed methane (CBM) production. CBM recovery is known to be a highly coupled and multiphase problem. The finite element square method is used to integrate a fracture-scale model in a multiscale scheme. This method consists to localize the macroscale deformation to the microscale, then resolve the boundary value problem on the microscale with finite elements, then homogenize the microscale stresses to compute macroscopic quantities, and finally resolve the boundary value problem on the macroscale with finite elements. This approach has the advantage that it does not require to write some constitutive laws at the macroscale but only at the REV-scale. The multiscale model is therefore appropriate for reservoir modelling. The model is developed and implemented in a finite element code and the simulation of a synthetic reservoir is considered

Natural history of the ERVWE1 endogenous retroviral locus

BACKGROUND: The human HERV-W multicopy family includes a unique proviral locus, termed ERVWE1, whose full-length envelope ORF was preserved through evolution by the action of a selective pressure. The encoded Env protein (Syncytin) is involved in hominoid placental physiology. RESULTS: In order to infer the natural history of this domestication process, a comparative genomic analysis of the human 7q21.2 syntenic regions in eutherians was performed. In primates, this region was progressively colonized by LTR-elements, leading to two different evolutionary pathways in Cercopithecidae and Hominidae, a genetic drift versus a domestication, respectively. CONCLUSION: The preservation in Hominoids of a genomic structure consisting in the juxtaposition of a retrotransposon-derived MaLR LTR and the ERVWE1 provirus suggests a functional link between both elements

Effect of the deposition route on the microstructure of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings

Plasma-spray (PS) is the most common technique used to cover orthopaedic titanium-based implant surfaces with hydroxyapatite (HA - Ca10(PO4)6OH2). The objective of the current work was to explore the influence of the precursor nature and characteristics (mainly powder size, Ca/P ratio, and density) on the morphology and the microstructure of HA coatings, deposited either by conventional atmospheric plasma spray (APS) or by rf-suspension plasma spray (rf-SPS). Two powders with different size distribution, density and shape were sprayed with same operating APS conditions. In parallel two water-based suspensions with distinct particle size and chemistry (Ca/P ratio) were implemented in rf-SPS. The morphology of both APS and rf-SPS coatings observed by SEM exhibits micro and sub-micro sized structures respectively, with similar porosity and thickness. The difference in precursor particle size does not affect the coating structure in rf-SPS, unlike in APS conditions. Superimposition of topography and phases maps performed from profilometry and Raman cartographies showed no direct correlation between the surface profile and composition. But such analysis highlighted the heterogeneity of the phases composing the coating surface, opening the possibility of a better understanding of biological behaviour

B cell depletion in immune thrombocytopenia reveals splenic long-lived plasma cells.

International audiencePrimary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a disorder caused by autoantibody-mediated platelet destruction and decreased platelet production. Rituximab, a B cell-depleting agent, has become the first-line treatment for ITP; however, patients with refractory disease usually require splenectomy. We identified antibody-secreting cells as the major splenic B cell population that is resistant to rituximab. The phenotype, antibody specificity, and gene expression profile of these cells were characterized and compared to those of antibody-secreting cells from untreated ITP spleens and from healthy tissues. Antiplatelet-specific plasma cells (PC) were detected in the spleens of patients with ITP up to 6 months after rituximab treatment, and the PC population displayed a long-lived program similar to the one of bone marrow PC, thus explaining for most of these patients the absence of response to rituximab and the response to splenectomy. When analyzed by multiplex PCR at the single-cell level, normal splenic PC showed a markedly different gene expression profile, with an intermediate signature, including genes characteristic of both long-lived PC and proliferating plasmablasts. Surprisingly, long-lived PC were not detected in untreated ITP spleens. These results suggest that the milieu generated by B cell depletion promotes the differentiation and settlement of long-lived PC in the spleen
