    TOXICITY OF TAGETES MINUTA ESSENTIAL OIL IN SILVER CATFISH (RHAMDIA QUELEN)

    Objective: Evaluation of Tagetes minuta L. essential oil (EOTM) toxicity in the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen.Methods: The EOTM extracted by hydrodistillation was identified qualitatively based on retention indices and the mass spectrum of its components by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and quantified by GC with flame ionization detector. Fish were exposed to 0, 50, 100, 200 mg l-1 EOTM and ethanol (1.5 ml) (n = 10 each concentration) and mortality observed after 24, 48 and 96 h (h).Results: The EOTM presented as the main constituents: di-hidrotagetone (7.66 %), Z-tagetone (29.50%) and E-tagetone (40.37%). Silver catfish mortality was 10% after 96 h at 50 mg l-1, 70 and 80% after 24 and 96 h, respectively, at 100 mg l-1 and 80, 90 and 100% after 24, 48 and 96 h, respectively, at 200 mg l-1.Conclusion: The use of EOTM is not recommended in fish farming at the concentrations measured in this study due to its toxic action.Keywords: Medicinal plants, Fish farming, Toxic effect, Cloves marigoldÂ

    Screening of brazilian plants for the presence of peroxides

    Extratos clorofĂłrmicos ou diclorometĂąnicos de 357 espĂ©cies vegetais de ocorrĂȘncia no sul do Brasil foram testados quanto Ă  presença de perĂłxidos, atravĂ©s de cromatografia em camada delgada, utilizando o reagente de detecção de Huber & Fröhlke. Das espĂ©cies testadas, 71 (20%) apresentaram resultado positivo, a maioria delas (56%) pertencentes Ă  famĂ­lia Asteraceae. A maioria das espĂ©cies testadas pertencia a Asteraceae, mas outras 55 famĂ­lias foram tambĂ©m testadas, abrangendo um total de 77 gĂȘneros.Chloroform or dichloromethane extracts of 357 southern Brazilian plant species were tested for the presence of peroxides by thinlayer chromatography, using the spray reagent from Huber & Fröhlke. From the species tested, 71 (20%) showed positive results and most of them (56%) are Asteraceae species. The species tested were mainly from Asteraceae, but 55 more families were screened, in a total of 77 genera surveyed

    CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF TAGETES MINUTA FRONT OF THE CRYPTOCOCCUS SPP. ISOLATES FROM THE ENVIRONMENT

    Objective: This study evaluated the chemical composition and antifungal activity of the essential oil of inflorescences of Tagetes minuta (EOTM) belonging to the Asteraceae family against Cryptococcus spp. This microorganism is the encapsulated yeast-like and is recognized as an opportunistic fungal pathogen of great clinical importance.Methods: The inflorescences of T. minuta were collected in Itaara/RS, Brazil, in April 2013, and identification of the components was performed by GC-MS. The species of fungi are environmental isolates of Cryptococcus spp. identified by direct examination with India ink, urease test, culture and agar Niger medium canavanine glycine bromothymol blue, and all fungi isolates were confirmed by the use of automated panel MicroScan¼ Rapid Yeast ID (SIEMENS¼). ATCC strains of C. gattii, C. neoformans and C. grubii belonging to the Microbiology Laboratory of the Centro Universitário Franciscano of Santa Maria/RS, Brazil were also used. The antifungal activity of the EOTM was evaluated by microdilution.Results: Most strains of Cryptococcus spp. were sensitive to EOTM even at low concentrations, except when the microorganism in question was Cryptococcus grubii which the essential oil showed a weak antifungal action.Conclusion: The EOTM appears as promising in prospecting for new drugs for the treatment of cryptococcosis.Keywords: Cryptococcosis, Natural products, Antifungal, Marigol

    Anesthesia of Epinephelus marginatus with essential oil of Aloysia polystachya: an approach on blood parameters

    This study investigated the anesthetic potential of the essential oil (EO) of Aloysia polystachya in juveniles of dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus). Fish were exposed to different concentrations of EO of A. polystachya to evaluate time of induction and recovery from anesthesia. In the second experiment, fish were divided into four groups: control, ethanol and 50 or 300 mu L L-1 EO of A. polystachya, and each group was submitted to induction for 3.5 min and recovery for 5 or 10 min. The blood gases and glucose levels showed alterations as a function of the recovery times, but Na+ and K+ levels did not show any alteration. In conclusion, the EO from leaves of A. polystachya is an effective anesthetic for dusky grouper, because anesthesia was reached within the recommended time at EO concentrations of 300 and 400 mu L L-1.
