Fractals and Scars on a Compact Octagon

    Get PDF
A finite universe naturally supports chaotic classical motion. An ordered fractal emerges from the chaotic dynamics which we characterize in full for a compact 2-dimensional octagon. In the classical to quantum transition, the underlying fractal can persist in the form of scars, ridges of enhanced amplitude in the semiclassical wave function. Although the scarring is weak on the octagon, we suggest possible subtle implications of fractals and scars in a finite universe.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figs, LaTeX fil

Quantum Charged Spinning Particles in a Strong Magnetic Field (a Quantal Guiding Center Theory)

    Get PDF
A quantal guiding center theory allowing to systematically study the separation of the different time scale behaviours of a quantum charged spinning particle moving in an external inhomogeneous magnetic filed is presented. A suitable set of operators adapting to the canonical structure of the problem and generalizing the kinematical momenta and guiding center operators of a particle coupled to a homogenous magnetic filed is constructed. The Pauli Hamiltonian rewrites in this way as a power series in the magnetic length lB=c/eBl_B= \sqrt{\hbar c/eB} making the problem amenable to a perturbative analysis. The first two terms of the series are explicitly constructed. The effective adiabatic dynamics turns to be in coupling with a gauge filed and a scalar potential. The mechanism producing such magnetic-induced geometric-magnetism is investigated in some detail.Comment: LaTeX (epsfig macros), 27 pages, 2 figures include

Asymptotics of large bound states of localized structures

    Get PDF
We analyze stationary fronts connecting uniform and periodic states emerging from a pattern-forming instability. The size of the resulting periodic domains cannot be predicted with weakly nonlinear methods. We show that what determine this size are exponentially small (but exponentially growing in space) terms. These can only be computed by going beyond all orders of the usual multiple-scale expansion. We apply the method to the Swift-Hohenberg equation and derive analytically a snaking bifurcation curve. At each fold of this bifurcation curve, a new pair of peaks is added to the periodic domain, which can thus be seen as a bound state of localized structures. Such scenarios have been reported with optical localized structures in nonlinear cavities and localized buckling

Decoherence-free dynamical and geometrical entangling phase gates

It is shown that entangling two-qubit phase gates for quantum computation with atoms inside a resonant optical cavity can be generated via common laser addressing, essentially, within one step. The obtained dynamical or geometrical phases are produced by an evolution that is robust against dissipation in form of spontaneous emission from the atoms and the cavity and demonstrates resilience against fluctuations of control parameters. This is achieved by using the setup introduced by Pachos and Walther [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 187903 (2002)] and employing entangling Raman- or STIRAP-like transitions that restrict the time evolution of the system onto stable ground states.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, REVTEX, Eq. Measurements of Pilot Time Delay as Influenced by Controller Characteristics and Vehicles Time Delays

    Get PDF
A study to measure and compare pilot time delay when using a space shuttle rotational hand controller and a more conventional control stick was conducted at NASA Ames Research Center's Dryden Flight Research Facility. The space shuttle controller has a palm pivot in the pitch axis. The more conventional controller used was a general-purpose engineering simulator stick that has a pivot length between that of a typical aircraft center stick and a sidestick. Measurements of the pilot's effective time delay were obtained through a first-order, closed-loop, compensatory tracking task in pitch. The tasks were implemented through a space shuttle cockpit simulator and a critical task tester device. The study consisted of 450 data runs with four test pilots and one nonpilot, and used three control stick configurations and two system delays. Results showed that the heavier conventional stick had the lowest pilot effective time delays associated with it, whereas the shuttle and light conventional sticks each had similar higher pilot time delay characteristics. It was also determined that each control stick showed an increase in pilot time delay when the total system delay was increased

Anomalous Hall effect in the Co-based Heusler compounds Co2_{2}FeSi and Co2_{2}FeAl

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the Heusler compounds Co2_{2}FeSi and Co2_{2}FeAl is studied in dependence of the annealing temperature to achieve a general comprehension of its origin. We have demonstrated that the crystal quality affected by annealing processes is a significant control parameter to tune the electrical resistivity ρxx\rho_{xx} as well as the anomalous Hall resistivity ρahe\rho_{ahe}. Analyzing the scaling behavior of ρahe\rho_{ahe} in terms of ρxx\rho_{xx} points to a temperature-dependent skew scattering as the dominant mechanism in both Heusler compounds

Berry phase and quantized Hall effect in three-dimension

We consider Bloch electrons in the electromagnetic field and argue the relation between the Berry phase and the quantized Hall conductivity in three-dimension. The Berry phase we consider here is induced by the adiabatic change of the time-dependent vector potential. The relation has been shown in two-dimensional systems, and we generalize the relation in three-dimensional systems.Comment: corrected some typos. Accepted for publication in J. Phys. Soc. Jp

Thermalization of a Brownian particle via coupling to low-dimensional chaos

It is shown that a paradigm of classical statistical mechanics --- the thermalization of a Brownian particle --- has a low-dimensional, deterministic analogue: when a heavy, slow system is coupled to fast deterministic chaos, the resultant forces drive the slow degrees of freedom toward a state of statistical equilibrium with the fast degrees. This illustrates how concepts useful in statistical mechanics may apply in situations where low-dimensional chaos exists.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages, no figures

Transitionless quantum drivings for the harmonic oscillator

Two methods to change a quantum harmonic oscillator frequency without transitions in a finite time are described and compared. The first method, a transitionless-tracking algorithm, makes use of a generalized harmonic oscillator and a non-local potential. The second method, based on engineering an invariant of motion, only modifies the harmonic frequency in time, keeping the potential local at all times.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. Semi-classical calculations of the two-point correlation form factor for diffractive systems

The computation of the two-point correlation form factor K(t) is performed for a rectangular billiard with a small size impurity inside for both periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is demonstrated that all terms of perturbation expansion of this form factor in powers of t can be computed directly by semiclassical trace formula. The main part of the calculation is the summation of non-diagonal terms in the cross product of classical orbits. When the diffraction coefficient is a constant our results coincide with expansion of exact expressions ontained by a different method.Comment: 42 pages, 10 figures, Late
