INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) and Fibromyalgia (FM) may share similar signs and symptoms. Among them, muscle pain may be involved and significantly reduce the quality of life of these patients. AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to determine the prevalence of TMD in patients with FM.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this systematic review six electronic databases (LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, PsycINFO, and Web of Science), as well as three grey literature databases (Google Scholar, Open Grey, and ProQuest) were searched. Cross-sectional studies were selected by two independent reviewers and analyzed in two-phases, following the PRISMA statement. Risk of bias was assessed through the MASTARI (Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument for observational studies from the Joana Briggs Institute).RESULTS: From 660 articles, 51 were eligible for full-text reading and six were finally included. None of the articles met all quality methodological criteria. Therefore, considering the overall risk of bias, one article was judged with moderate risk and five with low risk of bias. A heterogeneity was considered high; thus, a meta-analysis was not performed. From the qualitative analysis it was possible to determine that between 13% to 87.1% of patients with FM can present TMD.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of TMD in patients with FM ranged from 13% to 87.1%. It is suggested that further studies be carried out, mainly with longitudinal design and better quality methodology to help answer whether fibromyalgia is a risk factor for the development of TMDs

Brazilian honey possesses large floral sources with various colors and flavors due to botanical and geographical differences and the large extension of the country. The absence of antibiotics and pesticides contamination positively differentiates Brazilian honey in the international market. Thus, the present chapter presents an overview of regulatory aspects for identity and quality evaluation of honey produced and commercialized in Brazil and international markets, as well as, it compares the production and consumption of honey with other countries. In addition, the chapter presents physicochemical and microbiological analysis commonly used in honey, as fundamentals of the technics and literature results with different kinds of honey obtained in Brazil. Physicochemical quality control and microbiological analysis of honey samples is of fundamental importance for assessing their quality, possible adulteration and storage conditions. In the literature, several methodologies exist to be used in the performance of honey quality control and each one complements the results in order to have an idea about the quality of the product, the absence of adulteration, deterioration, and environmental pollution and geographical area. Finally, we will present the market scenario nowadays with future perspectives and some recognition obtained for Brazilian bee products in international events

The alternative use of natural products, like royal jelly (RJ), may be an important tool for the treatment of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. RJ presents a large number of bioactive substances, including antimicrobial compounds. In this study, we carried out the chemical characterization of fresh and lyophilized RJ and investigated their antibacterial effects with the purpose of evaluating if the lyophilization process maintains the chemical and antibacterial properties of RJ. Furthermore, we evaluated the antibacterial efficacy of the main fatty acid found in RJ, the 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10H2DA). Chromatographic profile of the RJ samples showed similar fingerprints and the presence of 10H2DA in both samples. Furthermore, fresh and lyophilized RJ were effective against all bacteria evaluated; that is, the lyophilization process maintains the antibacterial activity of RJ and the chemical field of 10H2DA. The fatty acid 10H2DA exhibited a good antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae. Therefore, it may be used as an alternative and complementary treatment for infections caused by antibiotic-resistant S. pneumoniae

The aim of this work is to describe the physiotherapeutic activities developed at the Multidisciplinary Orofacial Pain Center (CEMDOR) of Dentistry at UFSC in the period from march to July of 2018. CEMDOR performs diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs), Sleep Disorders and Orofacial Pain through the integration of several health areas. Together with the Dentistry students, physiotherapists participate in the anamneses and case studies, besides performing specific treatments of the area. These treatments are based on exercises, myofascial releases and trigger points, home guidelines, stretching, joint mobilization techniques, osteopathy, postural and respiratory reeducation, among others. During the treatments, it was possible to show improvement in the range of motion, pain, function recovery and strengthening of the musculoskeletal system. These findings demonstrate that physiotherapy plays a fundamental role in the improvement and control of TMDs and orofacial pain, improving patients' quality of life

O risco de viés foi avaliado utilizando a ferramenta Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies, Case control, and Cohort studies. Abstract: Purpose. To systematically review and critically appraise available literature regarding studies that evaluated the association between temporomandibular disorder and anxiety in adults. Methods. We considered eligible studies that used the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/ TMD) or Diagnostic Criteria (DC/ TMD) and validated tools for assessing anxiety. Six main electronic databases were searched, complemented with three grey literature databases. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists, Case-Control, and Cohort studies. Results. Out of 1087 references identified up to June 2018, 18 observational studies were included for the qualitative synthesis. Overall, a positive association between TMD and anxiety was observed in 13 studies. Considering specific tools for anxiety assessment, conflicting results were found. Substantial clinical and methodological heterogeneity across studies were observed. TMD diagnostic subgroups (such as muscular and articular) were often poorly reported. Among five articles investigating specific TMD diagnoses, a positive association with anxiety symptoms was observed in two studies evaluating disc displacement and in one study investigating chronic myofascial pain. Regarding risk of bias, 13 studies were judged with low risk and five with moderate risk. Conclusions. Considering the available evidence, a positive association between TMD and anxiety symptoms was supported by most of the included studies

Benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECTS) is a form of epilepsy with no demonstrable anatomical lesion showing spontaneous seizure remission. During the active phase of the disease the children may show cognitive deficits. The objective of this study was to assess, in children with BECTS, the relationship between clinical-EEG aspects and performance in the school performance test (SPT), Raven's progressive matrixes test and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III). Forty-two 7 to 11 year old children were included and the following tests carried out: anamnesis, neurological examination, electroencephalogram (EEG), SPT, Raven's test and WISC-III. The children with BECTS had normal IQ values but showed inferior performance in the SPT more frequently than "healthy" children, paired with respect to age and maternal scholastic level. There was moderate positive correlation between WISC-III results and the age when the seizures started and the educational level of the parents. On the other hand, aspects linked to the epileptic nature of BECTS, such as the number of seizures, time since last seizure and the number and lateralization of the centro-temporal spikes on the EEG, showed no correlation with the neuropsychological tests.
