A study of methods to predict and measure the transmission of sound through the walls of light aircraft. A survey of techniques for visualization of noise fields
A survey of the most widely used methods for visualizing acoustic phenomena is presented. Emphasis is placed on acoustic processes in the audible frequencies. Many visual problems are analyzed on computer graphic systems. A brief description of the current technology in computer graphics is included. The visualization technique survey will serve as basis for recommending an optimum scheme for displaying acoustic fields on computer graphic systems
A study of methods to predict and measure the transmission of sound through the walls of light aircraft
The objectives are: measurement of dynamic properties of acoustical foams and incorporation of these properties in models governing three-dimensional wave propagation in foams; tests to measure sound transmission paths in the HP137 Jetstream 3; and formulation of a finite element energy model. In addition, the effort to develop a numerical/empirical noise source identification technique was completed. The investigation of a design optimization technique for active noise control was also completed. Monthly progress reports which detail the progress made toward each of the objectives are summarized
Tempered Adversarial Networks
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have been shown to produce realistic
samples from high-dimensional distributions, but training them is considered
hard. A possible explanation for training instabilities is the inherent
imbalance between the networks: While the discriminator is trained directly on
both real and fake samples, the generator only has control over the fake
samples it produces since the real data distribution is fixed by the choice of
a given dataset. We propose a simple modification that gives the generator
control over the real samples which leads to a tempered learning process for
both generator and discriminator. The real data distribution passes through a
lens before being revealed to the discriminator, balancing the generator and
discriminator by gradually revealing more detailed features necessary to
produce high-quality results. The proposed module automatically adjusts the
learning process to the current strength of the networks, yet is generic and
easy to add to any GAN variant. In a number of experiments, we show that this
can improve quality, stability and/or convergence speed across a range of
different GAN architectures (DCGAN, LSGAN, WGAN-GP).Comment: accepted to ICML 201
A Study of Non-Neutral Networks with Usage-based Prices
Hahn and Wallsten wrote that network neutrality "usually means that broadband
service providers charge consumers only once for Internet access, do not favor
one content provider over another, and do not charge content providers for
sending information over broadband lines to end users." In this paper we study
the implications of non-neutral behaviors under a simple model of linear
demand-response to usage-based prices. We take into account advertising
revenues and consider both cooperative and non-cooperative scenarios. In
particular, we model the impact of side-payments between service and content
providers. We also consider the effect of service discrimination by access
providers, as well as an extension of our model to non-monopolistic content
providers
Non-Locality of Experimental Qutrit Pairs
The insight due to John Bell that the joint behavior of individually measured
entangled quantum systems cannot be explained by shared information remains a
mystery to this day. We describe an experiment, and its analysis, displaying
non-locality of entangled qutrit pairs. The non-locality of such systems, as
compared to qubit pairs, is of particular interest since it potentially opens
the door for tests of bipartite non-local behavior independent of probabilistic
Bell inequalities, but of deterministic nature
Crucial involvement of xanthine oxidase in the intracellular signalling networks associated with human myeloid cell function
Xanthine oxidase (XOD) is an enzyme which plays a central role in purine catabolism by converting hypoxanthine into xanthine and then further into uric acid. Here we report that XOD is activated in THP-1 human myeloid cells in response to pro-inflammatory and growth factor stimulation. This effect occurred following stimulation of THP-1 cells with ligands of plasma membrane associated TLRs 2 and 4, endosomal TLRs 7 and 8 as well as stem cell growth factor (SCF). Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription complexes were found to be responsible for XOD upregulation. Importantly, the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a major myeloid cell translation regulator, was also found to be essential for XOD activation. Specific inhibition of XOD by allopurinol and sodium tungstate led to an increase in intracellular AMP levels triggering downregulation of mTOR activation by phosphorylation of its T2446 residue. Taken together, our results demonstrate for the first time that XOD is not only activated by pro-inflammatory stimuli or SCF but also plays an important role in maintaining mTOR-dependent translational control during the biological responses of human myeloid cells
