This thesis is based on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), with its three interdependent levels of analysis: text, discourse practice, and social practice, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), gender studies and modality. In this study, discourse is investigated in two Brazilian magazines dedicated to secretaries and executive women, Secretária Executiva and Mulher Executiva, examining social identities in a business context. The lexicogrammatical analysis in the six editorials showed patterns of women's experience related mainly to material, mental and relational processes revealing social practices in that context. Moreover, the analysis of three covers of the magazines applying a grammar of visual design complemented the investigation. The results suggest that, in the professional context portrayed in the magazines, i) women's world is connected to the private and public sphere and; ii) the editorials are written to a feminine business public, can be classified as hortatory texts and self-help discourse; and finally iii) there are traces of changes in respect to Brazilian executive women's identities. The panorama outlined above shows the attempt of this study to further investigate the complexity of research that considers language and social context. This study may also contribute to provide awareness and attitudes in relation to language use and its social function, which could make our educational practices more significant

Testing the Robustness of the Circadian Clock

The surface of the Earth receives 24 hour cycles of light and darkness. Most living things have arisen under these conditions, and have evolved circadian clocks to keep track of time. In Drosophila, the circadian clock comprises the genes Clock (CLK) and Cycle (CYC) which are negatively regulated by the genes Period (PER) and Timeless (TIM). CLK/CYC are transcription factors: their targets include PER/TIM, which accumulate as proteins to repress their own production. Light deactivates PER/TIM proteins, periodically activating CLK/CYC, and causing 24h rhythms of transcription activity. Our lab has previously shown that intestinal stem cells are regulated by the clock during intestinal regeneration. Drosophila, maintained under constant 12h light/12h dark photoperiod, show a rhythmic intestinal stress response, and cell-specific disruption of the clock in different intestinal cell types causes arrhythmic repair and poor survival during damage. This suggests independent cell-autonomous clocks in the intestine coordinate their functions during stress. A central question is whether circadian clocks are coordinated in different tissues, and to what extent are their physiological outputs tissue or cell-autonomous. Using a clock reporter, circadian clocks throughout Drosophila were found to be completely cell autonomous. However, both intestinal damage and aging were found to have attenuating effects on circadian clock function. Food intake was also shown to be able to affect the output of the circadian clock when restricted to a specific time of day. These findings demonstrate the robustness of the circadian system throughout the body

Design of fabric preforms for double diaphragm forming

    Get PDF
Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) has the potential of becoming one of the most cost effective ways of producing composite structures since the raw materials used, resin and dry fabric, are less costly than prepregs. Unfortunately these low material costs are offset by the high labor costs incurred to layup the dry fabric into 3D shapes. To reduce the layup costs, double diaphragm forming is being investigated as a potential technique for creating a complex 3D preform from a simple flat layup. As part of our effort to develop double diaphragm forming into a production capable process, we have undertaken a series of experiments to investigate the interactions between process parameters, mold geometry, fabric weave, tow size, and the quality of the formed part. The results of these tests will be used to determine the forming geometry limitations of double diaphragm forming and to characterize the formability of fabric configurations. An important part of this work was the development of methods to measure and analyze fiber orientations, deformation angles, tow spreading, and shape conformation of the formed parts. This paper will describe the methods used to mark plies, the double diaphragm forming process, the techniques used to measure the formed parts, and the calculation of the parameters of interest. The results can be displayed as 3D contour plots. These experimental results have also been used to verify and improve a computer model which simulates the draping of fabrics over 3D mold shapes

Exploiting news to categorize tweets: Quantifying the impact of different news collections

Short texts, due to their nature which makes them full of abbreviations and new coined acronyms, are not easy to classify. Text enrichment is emerging in the literature as a potentially useful tool. This paper is a part of a longer term research that aims at understanding the effectiveness of tweet enrichment by means of news, instead of the whole web as a knowledge source. Since the choice of a news collection may contribute to produce very different outcomes in the enrichment process, we compare the impact of three features of such collections: volume, variety, and freshness. We show that all three features have a significant impact on categorization accuracy. Copyright \ua9 2016 for the individual papers by the paper's authors

ENTREVISTAS: UM OLHAR NOS MARCADORES DA FALA DE FALANTES NATIVOS, OU MARCADORES DO DISCURSO?

Based on Speech Production and Genre studies, I supply real data and describe  informal interviews with native English speakers collected in the Speak up Magazine, a publication dedicated to Brazilian English speakers. Speech markers,  or also known as discourse markers, which are used to signal different functions in conversation and commonly used by native speakers (NS) comprising the patterning of natural talk were highlighted. I show that in informal interviews in English, NS use, although not always, the discourse markers ‘you know’ and ‘I mean’ to give a continuum in the flow of speech and to maintain a connection with the interlocutor. Finally, I discuss the value of fluency features that do not normally contribute with additional lexical information and present the contributions of this study to the teaching of English as a foreign language, to didactic material production in real contexts, and for social relations.

In this article I report the data analysis and results in terms of social and discursive practice based on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and gender studies. The purpose is to discuss what is happening in the immediate social context in which my corpus, six editorials of a Brazilian magazine dedicated to executive secretaries - Secretária Executiva and Mulher Executiva, is inserted and how that environment affects women’s identity. The main objective was to answer what the editorials, the interviews and the news report reveal about the social context. Therefore, I present the results of the context of situation analysis with its three variables; field, tenor and mode. For the field variable, first I report some characteristics of production and distribution and types of articles found in the magazine to point out what is going on in that context. Second, the group of students’ and teachers’ opinions, and the linguistic features of the editorials represent the variable tenor, answering who interacts with whom and the way the interaction is realized in that context. Third, I discuss the variable, mode, showing the role of language. Finally, I present the final discussions. Concluindo, apresento as discussões finais

ABSTRACTThis study described two activities in the Business English textbook, elementary level, Business Result, Student's Book (GRANT; HUGHES;REBECCA, 2012). Initially, the Executive Secretariat (ES) professional profile was presented, as well as the skills for its professional training, highlighting the use of language. Then, the perspectives about language genres and visual design grammar (VDG) were approached. The main objective was to analyze two activities, describing social actions, and representations, instituted by means of language genres, and their connection to ES professionals. The methodology was interpretive and descriptive, following the qualitative patterns. The analysis showed that the activities refer to communication studies, ecolocally correct actions, advanced technologies and the use of administrative and personal documents. Based on the studies of future challenges for the executive and administrative assistants, or ES, language genders, and GDV, it was possible to conclude that the themes and images in the two activities are part of the administrative routines of organizations in general. Finally, the teaching of languages for business seeks to reproduce specific pedagogical actions for that context and can be applied for the ES professional training

A INVESTIGAÇÃO DO TEMA INTERPESSOAL EM PERGUNTAS DE SURVEY

Based on Linguistics and with application in the Social Applied and Social Science areas, ten independent indicative interrogative English phrases of examples used in the book “Survey Questions: Handcrafting the Standardized Questionnaire” by Converse and Presser (1986) were analyzed and classified. Following the studies of SFL (Systemic Fuctional Linguistics) the Textual Metafunction - Interpersonal Theme - was explored. These examples are a sampling of the Interpersonal Theme in questions, especially in questions of survey, representing forms of interaction. With this study, it was possible to affirm that the Marked Theme in the questions means a signal for the interviewed, that is, a form of focusing on the subject to be researched. This signaling guides and produces more confident answers, it facilitates the interaction between interviewer and interviewed as well.

Emerging adulthood is a complex, multifaceted, unique and systems-oriented developmental period whereby individuals encounter a wide range of factors, each of which influence their subsequent adulthood outcomes (i.e., adaptive and maladaptive pathways). Given the importance of studying psychological adjustment and different types of loneliness in emerging adulthood, the purpose of the present study was to assess depressive symptomatology and family, social, and romantic loneliness in emerging adulthood. Specifically, the present study examined the impact of PARTheory (i.e., early relationship context), current attachment experiences in close relationships (i.e., current relationship context) and sense of mattering to family and friends (sense of awareness, sense of importance, and sense of reliance) on emerging adults\u27 overall reports of family, social, and romantic loneliness and depressive symptomatology. In addition, this study explored whether coping styles (i.e., behavioral and cognitive context) and psychological adjustment (i.e., personality context) mediated the role between early family and current attachment relationship experiences and the emerging adults\u27 reports of family, social, and romantic loneliness. Emerging adults (N = 440) from Wayne State University were assessed using the Adult Parental Acceptance Rejection Questionnaire, Short Form (PARQ), Experiences in Close Relationships Scale Revised (ECR-R), Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults - Short Form (SELSA-S), Interpersonal Mattering Scale (IMS), Adult Personality Assessment Questionnaire (PAQ), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D Scale), and Brief Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Scale (Brief-COPE), along with several demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, grade level, employment status, marital status, social networking rating, group involvement rating, etc.). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that family loneliness was best predicted by total father acceptance and rejection, sense of awareness to family, sense of importance to family, psychological adjustment, and use of behavioral disengagement. Social loneliness was best predicted by sense of awareness to friends, sense of importance to friends, psychological adjustment, use of instrumental support, and use of behavioral disengagement. Romantic loneliness was found to be influenced by attachment security, psychological adjustment, and use of emotional support. Depressive symptomatology was best predicted by gender, total father acceptance and rejection, attachment security, sense of awareness to family, psychological adjustment, and use of self-blame. In addition, results from the mediation analyses indicated that psychological adjustment mediated the relation between maternal acceptance and social loneliness, whereas psychological adjustment mediated the relation between paternal acceptance and social loneliness and between paternal acceptance and family loneliness. Use of instrumental support was found to mediate the relation between attachment security and family loneliness and between attachment security and social loneliness. Use of self-blame was also found to mediate the relation between attachment security and family loneliness and between attachment security and social loneliness. With result to attachment styles within emerging adulthood, results from the correlational and ANOVA analyses revealed that emerging adults with secure attachment styles reported a higher sense of mattering to family and friends and lower levels of depressive symptomatology, family loneliness, social loneliness, and romantic loneliness. In addition, security of attachment resulted in higher levels of use of instrumental support and use of emotional support and lower levels of behavioral disengagement, use of self-blame and use of self-distraction when coping within one\u27s current relationships. With respect to gender, results from the correlational and ANOVA analyses revealed that females reported a greater sense of importance and reliance to family, a greater sense of reliance to friends, and higher levels of depressive symptomatology, family loneliness, and social loneliness whereas males reported higher levels of romantic loneliness. In addition, females reported higher levels of use of emotional support, use of instrumental support, and use of self-distraction. Finally, emerging adults who reported spending more time on social networking systems also reported higher levels of social loneliness whereas those who reported being highly involved in various groups reported lower levels of family loneliness. The results are discussed in light of past research and the implications for clinical work and future research
