Financial Market Runs
Our paper offers a minimalist model of a run on a financial market. The prime ingredient is that each risk-neutral investor fears having to liquidate after a run, but before prices can recover back to fundamental values. During the urn, only the risk-averse market-making sector is willing to absorb shares. To avoid having to possibly liquidate shares at the marginal post-run price in which case the market-making sector will already hold a lot of share inventory and thus be more reluctant to absorb additional shares all investors may prefer selling their shares into the market today at the average run price, thereby causing the run itself. Consequently, stock prices are low and risk is allocated inefficiently. Liquidity runs and crises are not caused by liquidity shocks per se, but by the fear of future liquidity shocks.
On the Evolution of Overconfidence and Entrepreneurs
This paper explains why seemingly irrational overconfident behavior can persist. Information aggregation is poor in groups in which most individuals herd. By ignoring the herd, the actions of overconfident individuals ("entrepreneurs") convey their private information. However, entrepreneurs make mistakes and thus die more frequently. The socially optimal proportion of entrepreneurs trades off the positive information externality against high attrition rates of entrepreneurs, and depends on the size of the group, on the degree of overconfidence, and on the accuracy of individuals' private information. The stationary distribution trades off the fitness of the group against the fitness of overconfident individuals.Evolution, overconfidence, behavioral economics
A Note on Presumptions with Sequential Litigation
This note extends the Bernardo, Talley & Welch (1999) model of legal presumptions to study situations where litigation efforts are spent sequentially rather than simultaneously. The equilibria of the litigation stage are presented as functions of the underlying presumption. The equilibria and comparative statics are shown to be qualitatively similar to those of the simultaneous version. However, sequentiality allows the principal to pre commit to a litigation strategy, and thus possibly preempt any litigation effort whatsoever by the agent
Designing Corporate Bailouts
Although common economic wisdom suggests that government bailouts are inefficient because they reduce incentives to avoid failure and induce excessive entry by marginal firms, in practice bailouts are difficult to avoid for systemically significant enterprises. Recent experience suggests that bailouts also induce litigation from shareholders and managers complaining about expropriation and wrongful termination by the government. Our model shows how governments can design tax-financed corporate bailouts to reduce these distortions and points to the causes of inefficiencies in real-world implementations such as the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Bailouts with minimal distortion depend critically on the government’s ability to expropriate shareholders and terminate managers
Role of fetal MRI in the evaluation of isolated and non-isolated corpus callosum dysgenesis: results of a cross-sectional study
PURPOSE:
The aims of this study were to characterize isolated and non-isolated forms of corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) at fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to identify early predictors of associated anomalies.
METHODS:
We retrospectively analyzed 104 fetuses with CCD undergoing MRI between 2006 and 2016. Corpus callosum, cavum septi pellucidi, biometry, presence of ventriculomegaly, gyration anomalies, cranio-encephalic abnormalities and body malformations were evaluated. Results of genetic tests were also recorded.
RESULTS:
At MRI, isolated CCD was 26.9%, the rest being associated to other abnormalities. In the isolated group, median gestational age at MRI was lower in complete agenesis than in hypoplasia (22 vs 28 weeks). In the group with additional findings, cortical dysplasia was the most frequently associated feature (P = 0.008), with a more frequent occurrence in complete agenesis (70%) versus other forms; mesial frontal lobes were more often involved than other cortical regions (P = 0.006), with polymicrogyria as the most frequent cortical malformation (40%). Multivariate analysis confirmed the association between complete agenesis and cortical dysplasia (odds ratio = 7.29, 95% confidence interval 1.51-35.21).
CONCLUSIONS:
CCD is often complicated by other intra-cranial and extra-cranial findings (cortical dysplasias as the most prevalent) that significantly affect the postnatal prognosis. The present study showed CCD with associated anomalies as more frequent than isolated (73.1%). In isolated forms, severe ventriculomegaly was a reliable herald of future appearance of associated features
Molecular analysis of sarcomeric and non-sarcomeric genes in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common genetic heart disorder characterized by
unexplained left ventricle hypertrophy associated with non-dilated ventricular chambers. Several genes
encoding heart sarcomeric proteins have been associated to HCM, but a small proportion of HCM patients
harbor alterations in other non-sarcomeric loci. The variable expression of HCM seems influenced by genetic
modifier factors and new sequencing technologies are redefining the understanding of genotype–phenotype
relationships, even if the interpretations of the numerous identified variants pose several challenges.
Methods and results: We investigated 62 sarcomeric and non-sarcomeric genes in 41 HCM cases and in
3 HCM-related disorders patients. We employed an integrated approach that combines multiple tools for
the prediction, annotation and visualization of functional variants. Genotype–phenotype correlations
were carried out for inspecting the involvement of each gene in age onset and clinical variability of HCM. The
80% of the non-syndromic patients showed at least one rare non-synonymous variant (nsSNV) and among
them, 58% carried alterations in sarcomeric loci, 14% in desmosomal and 7% in other non-sarcomeric ones
without any sarcomere change. Statistical analyses revealed an inverse correlation between the number of
nsSNVs and age at onset, and a relationship between the clinical variability and number and type of variants.
Conclusions: Our results extend the mutational spectrum of HCM and contribute in defining the molecular
pathogenesis and inheritance pattern(s) of this condition. Besides, we delineate a specific procedure for the
identification of the most likely pathogenetic variants for a next generation sequencing approach embodied in
a clinical context
Plyometric Training in Female Volleyball Players. Systematic Review
Female volleyball is practiced all over the world at a professional and amateur level. Vertical jumps are a fundamental part of the development of this sport. In this sense, plyometric training can be effective for increased performance. The purpose of the study was to describe the methods and programs of plyometric training in women volleyball players, as well as the results obtained from them. The following electronic databases were searched March to June 2016. Electronic databases consulted were Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane and SPORTDiscus. This systematic review was performed following PRISMA statement. PEDro scale was used to evaluated the methodological quality of the included studies. As total of 205 articles were obtained after remove duplicates. Finally 7 articles were selected. The main results were that those studies using amateur athletes obtain better results than those performed with professional athletes when performing plyometric training programs. It is also indicated that a period of low intensity plyometric training could prevent a decrease in vertical jump height; As well as it is necessary to schedule the preseason to avoid loss in the ability to jump. All this seems to indicate, in conclusion, that a decrease in volume and an increase in intensity in the training of plyometric training is necessary
Insulin lispro is a human insulin analog of rapid onset of action and duration, which mimics the physiological insulin profile after a meal. We have evaluated the safety and efficacy of lispro insulin in comparison with human regular insulin in a crossover, multicenter, randomized trial in 25 type 1 diabetic patients in use of human NPH and regular insulin (median age = 16 years). After administration of lispro or regular insulin for 2 months, the patients were transferred for the other insulin for two more months, maintaining the basal NPH insulin regimen. There was no difference in the postprandial glucose excursion and glycated hemoglobin A1c comparing the 2 groups (lispro and regular). The relative percentage decrease in glycemia was significantly greater with lispro insulin after lunch, in the first phase of the study (p<0.02). The total number of hypo-glycemic episodes was not different comparing both groups. However, there was a significant difference in the nocturnal hypoglycemia incidence with initial administration of lispro (p<0.05). With initial administration of regular insulin, there was an increase in the incidence of nocturnal hypoglycemia (p=0.038), with a subsequent reduction of hypoglycemia with insulin lispro (p=0.04). In the end of the study, 68% of the patients referred preference and better feeling with lispro, compared to regular insulin. Insulin lispro was a safe and efficacious option, with lower incidence of nocturnal hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetics. An optimization of the basal insulin regimen is necessary to improve glucose control with the use of rapid-action insulin.
Using intercultural videos of direct contact to implement vicarious contact: A school-based intervention that improves intergroup attitudes
We aimed to create an engaging and dynamic intervention for schools that uses videos of direct school peer contact to implement a vicarious contact intervention. Participants were ethnic majority (Italian) and minority (immigrant) high-school students (N = 485, age ranging from 14 to 22 years old, mean age = 17.24 years), who were asked to watch and evaluate videos created by peers from their school for a competition for the best video on intercultural friendships. Results revealed that vicarious contact, relative to a control condition where participants were not shown any videos, improved outgroup attitudes, reduced negative outgroup stereotypes, and increased willingness to engage in contact with the outgroup. These effects only emerged when intercultural friendships in the videos were salient. Inclusion of the other in the self, but neither intergroup anxiety nor fear of rejection by the outgroup, significantly mediated the effect of the videos on outcomes. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of the findings
OBJECTIVE: The last decade has seen increasing evidence of dysfunctions in the endogenous cannabinoid system in schizophrenia and of its relationship with the typical cognitive impairment of the disorder. Studies in animal models, healthy volunteers, and psychotic patients clearly suggest an antipsychotic-like effect of cannabidiol. This study investigated the effects of cannabidiol on selective attention in 28 schizophrenic patients using the Stroop Color Word Test and on these patients' electrodermal responsiveness to auditive stimuli. METHOD: The subjects attended two experimental sessions, the first one without the administration of drugs. In the second session the subjects were divided into three groups that received either a single dose of cannabidiol 300mg or cannabidiol 600mg or placebo. RESULTS: The three groups did not differ significantly with respect to electrodermal measures in the two experimental sessions. When the first and second sessions were compared improved performance was found in all three groups, with patients who received placebo and cannabidiol 300mg performing better than those who received cannabidiol 600mg. CONCLUSION: The single, acute administration of cannabidiol seems to have no beneficial effects on the performance of schizophrenic patients in the Stroop Color Word Test, although the hypothesis that chronic administration may lead to improvement cannot be disregarded.OBJETIVO: Descobertas relativas a possíveis disfunções do sistema canabinóide endógeno na esquizofrenia e sua relação com o prejuízo cognitivo característico da doença têm aumentado durante a última década.
