Measurement of the Atmospheric Muon Neutrinos with the MACRO Detector

The flux of muons induced by atmospheric neutrinos has been measured with the MACRO detector. Different event topologies have been detected, due to neutrino interactions in the apparatus and in the rock below it. The upward-throughgoing muon sample is the larger one and is generated by neutrinos with a peak energy of ~100 GeV. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26 % fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming \mutau neutrino oscillation, the angular shape and the normalization factor suggest maximal mixing and \Delta m^2 of a few times 10^{-3} eV^2. Also the other event categories induced by low-energy neutrinos (peak energy ~ 4 GeV) show a deficit of observed events. The value of this deficit and its uniformity with respect to the angular bins are in agreement with the oscillation parameters suggested by the analysis of the upward-throughgoing muon sample.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, Proceedings of La Thuile Conferenc

Passive scalars in turbulent channel flow at high Reynolds number

We study passive scalars in turbulent plane channels at computationally high Reynolds number, thus allowing us to observe previously unnoticed effects. The mean scalar profiles are found to obey a generalized logarithmic law which includes a linear correction term in the whole lower half-channel, and they follow a universal parabolic defect profile in the core region. This is consistent with recent findings regarding the mean velocity profiles in channel flow. The scalar variances also exhibit a near universal parabolic distribution in the core flow and hints of a sizeable log layer, unlike the velocity variances. The energy spectra highlight the formation of large scalar-bearing eddies with size proportional to the channel height which are caused by a local production excess over dissipation, and which are clearly visible in the flow visualizations. Close correspondence of the momentum and scalar eddies is observed, with the main difference being that the latter tend to form sharper gradients, which translates into higher scalar dissipation. Another notable Reynolds number effect is the decreased correlation of the passive scalar field with the vertical velocity field, which is traced to the reduced effectiveness of ejection event

Il presente lavoro illustra quello che doveva essere il Mediterraneo occidentale dei primi prospectors in età tardoantica: un'enclave fenicia insediata tra la Libia e le colonne d'Ercole, e ancora oltre i limiti del mondo, nella favolosa terra d'Iberia; uno spazio geografico ritualmente scompartito, che forse scandiva le peregrinazioni dei Fenici tra Tiro e Cadice, o che, sotto l'influenza del dio Melqart, si "prestava" ad accompagnare fisicamente gli esuli di Elissa nel lungo viaggio verso la futura Cartagine

Dal concetto di un centro trionfante e potente e di una periferia succube e sottomessa, tipico delle costruzioni ideologiche del potere vicino-orientale, si delinea il rapporto tra l’Oriente e un Occidente, spesso sconosciuto e irraggiungibile, ma anche rivendicato come pertinenza imperiale. Breve e sintetico tour di esplorazione sulla memoria di Melqart nella terra di Sardò, non per tracciare un itinerario delle attestazioni di Melqart nell'isola, ma per presentare alcune riflessioni, alcune suggestioni e ipotesi suggeritemi da determinati luoghi in cui il signore di Tiro viene ricordato attraverso documenti di rilievo

Indigeni e Fenici nelle isole di San Vittorio e Mal di Ventre (Sardegna occidentale)

Sono state individuate sicure attestazioni fenicie risalenti all’VIII secolo a.C. in due piccole isole circostanti la Sardegna: San Vittorio e Mal di Ventre, dislocate l’uno in prossimità della costa centro-orientale dell’isola di San Pietro, a ovest del litorale sulcitano, nel Sud-Ovest della Sardegna, l’altro al largo (3,5 miglia) della costa del Sinis, nella Sardegna centro-occidentale. In entrambe le isolette, interessate dallo stanziamento indigeno, sono stati acquisiti elementi materiali che documentano una presenza fenicia assai antica, rimontante all’VIII secolo a.C.

I Fenici sulle rotte dell'Occidente nel IX sec.a.C.: cronologie, incontri, strategie

The Phoenician ships begin to sail the seas of the West during the second half of the ninth century BC. Between the Atlantic area and the central Mediterranean a series of emporia, such as Huelva, La Rebanadilla and Utica return the earliest evidence of this important phenomenon of interaction with the local communities. It will lead, by the end of the century, to the structuring of a real Phoenician trade network stretched from the coasts of the Near East to the Portuguese and Moroccan coast. This paper examines the general outlook of the first Phoenician voyages starting from a center-Mediterranean perspective and prioritizing the strategic role played by the Sardinian island in the definition and expansion of the Phoenician trading strategies.Le navi dei Fenici iniziano a solcare i mari dell’Occidente nel corso della seconda metà del IX sec.a.C.; tra l’area atlantica e quella centro-mediterranea una serie di empori, come Huelva, La Rebanadilla e Utica restituiscono le testimonianze più antiche di questo importante fenomeno di interrelazione con le comunità locali che condurrà, già alla fine del secolo, alla strutturazione di una vera e propria rete mercantile fenicia distesa dalle coste del Vicino Oriente alla costa portoghese e marocchina. In questo lavoro si esamina il panorama generale delle prime navigazioni fenicie partendo da una prospettiva centro-mediterranea e privilegiando il ruolo strategico rivestito dalla Sardegna nella definizione e nelle strategie dell’espansione mercantile fenicia
