    A Role for Integrin avß3 in Invasion Activity of Highly Metastatic Syrian Hamster Fibroblasts

    The expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) specific receptors, integrins, was investigated in two closely related strains of oncogenically transformed fibroblasts drastically differing in spontaneous metastasizing. The highly metastatic cells (HM) were shown to express in their surface membranes much higher levels of collagen/vitronectin-specific integrin avß3, as compared to their lowly metastatic counterparts (LM). Inhibition of the avß3-mediated signal transduction strongly reduced the in vitro invasiveness of HM, whereas stimulation of avß3 signaling markedly augmented their invasive activity. The data obtained provide a direct evidence for implication of avß3 integrin in invasive phenotype of the oncotransformed fibroblasts

    Fluctuating Fronts as Correlated Extreme Value Problems: An Example of Gaussian Statistics

    In this paper, we view fluctuating fronts made of particles on a one-dimensional lattice as an extreme value problem. The idea is to denote the configuration for a single front realization at time tt by the set of co-ordinates {ki(t)}≡[k1(t),k2(t),...,kN(t)(t)]\{k_i(t)\}\equiv[k_1(t),k_2(t),...,k_{N(t)}(t)] of the constituent particles, where N(t)N(t) is the total number of particles in that realization at time tt. When {ki(t)}\{k_i(t)\} are arranged in the ascending order of magnitudes, the instantaneous front position can be denoted by the location of the rightmost particle, i.e., by the extremal value kf(t)=max[k1(t),k2(t),...,kN(t)(t)]k_f(t)=\text{max}[k_1(t),k_2(t),...,k_{N(t)}(t)]. Due to interparticle interactions, {ki(t)}\{k_i(t)\} at two different times for a single front realization are naturally not independent of each other, and thus the probability distribution Pkf(t)P_{k_f}(t) [based on an ensemble of such front realizations] describes extreme value statistics for a set of correlated random variables. In view of the fact that exact results for correlated extreme value statistics are rather rare, here we show that for a fermionic front model in a reaction-diffusion system, Pkf(t)P_{k_f}(t) is Gaussian.     Simulations of Quantum Logic Operations in Quantum Computer with Large Number of Qubits

    We report the first simulations of the dynamics of quantum logic operations with a large number of qubits (up to 1000). A nuclear spin chain in which selective excitations of spins is provided by the gradient of the external magnetic field is considered. The spins interact with their nearest neighbors. We simulate the quantum control-not (CN) gate implementation for remote qubits which provides the long-distance entanglement. Our approach can be applied to any implementation of quantum logic gates involving a large number of qubits.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figure

    Nitrogen and phosphorus limitation of oceanic microbial growth during spring in the Gulf of Aqaba

    Bioassay experiments were performed to identify how growth of key groups within the microbial community was simultaneously limited by nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) availability during spring in the Gulf of Aqaba's oceanic waters. Measurements of chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration and fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorescence generally demonstrated that growth of obligate phototrophic phytoplankton was co-limited by N and P and growth of facultative aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotropic (AAP) bacteria was limited by N. Phytoplankton exhibited an increase in chl a biomass over 24 to 48 h upon relief of nutrient limitation. This response coincided with an increase in photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency (F v /F m), but was preceded (within 24 h) by a decrease in effective absorption crosssection (σPSII) and electron turnover time (τ). A similar response for τ and bacterio-chl a was observed for the AAPs. Consistent with the up-regulation of PSII activity with FRR fluorescence were observations of newly synthesized PSII reaction centers via low temperature (77K) fluorescence spectroscopy for addition of N (and N + P). Flow cytometry revealed that the chl a and thus FRR fluorescence responses were partly driven by the picophytoplankton (æ10 μm) community, and in particular Synechococcus. Productivity of obligate heterotrophic bacteria exhibited the greatest increase in response to a natural (deep water) treatment, but only a small increase in response to N and P addition, demonstrating the importance of additional substrates (most likely dissolved organic carbon) in moderating the heterotrophs. These data support previous observations that the microbial community response (autotrophy relative to heterotrophy) is critically dependent upon the nature of transient nutrient enrichment. © Inter-Research 2009

    Air forces and moments on triangular and related wings with subsonic leading edges oscillating in supersonic potential flow

    This analysis treats the air forces and moments in supersonic potential flow on oscillating triangular wings and a series of sweptback and arrow wings with subsonic leading edges and supersonic trailing edges. For the wings undergoing sinusoidal torsional oscillations simultaneously with vertical translations, the linearized velocity potential is derived in the form of a power series in terms of a frequency parameter. This method can be useful for treatment of similar problems for other plan forms and for wings undergoing other sinusoidal motions. For triangular wings, as many terms of such a series expansion as may be derived can be determined; however, the terms after the first few become very cumbersome. Closed expressions that include the reduced frequency to the fifth power, an order which is sufficient for a large class of practical application, are given for the velocity potential and for the components of chordwise section force and moment coefficients. These wings are found to exhibit the possibility of undamped torsional oscillations for certain ranges of Mach number and locations of the axis of rotation.     On the transport and thermodynamic properties of quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes A0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17} (A=Na, K)

    We report a comparative study of the specific heat, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of the quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes Na0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17} and K0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17}, with special emphasis on the behavior near their respective charge-density-wave transition temperatures TPT_P. The contrasting behavior of both the transport and the thermodynamic properties near TPT_P is argued to arise predominantly from the different levels of intrinsic disorder in the two systems. A significant proportion of the enhancement of the thermal conductivity above TPT_P in Na0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17}, and to a lesser extent in K0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17}, is attributed to the emergence of phason excitations.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, To appear in Physical Review

    Expression of Integrins, Anchorage Dependent Apoptosis and Invasiveness of Multidrug Resistant Human Breast Carcinoma Cells

    The aim of the study was to investigate the role of integrins in anchorage dependent apoptosis (anoikis) and in vitro invasion of human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and its multidrug resistant subline MCF-7Dox. Acquisition of MDR was associated with markedly decreased expression of collagen specific a2ß1 and avß3 integrins, laminin specific a3ß1 and a6ß1 receptors and dramatic up-regulation of fibronectin specific a5ß1 integrin. The MDR subline was substantially more resistant to anoikis than their wild type counterparts. Furthermore, MCF-7Dox cells secreted MMP-9 collagenase and invaded Matrigel. We demonstrate for the first time that stimulation of ß1 integrin signaling strongly sensitizes MCF-7 cells to anoikis

    Multiple Vortex Cores in 2D Electronic Systems with Proximity Induced Superconductivity

    The structure of a proximity induced vortex core in a two-dimensional (2D) metallic layer covering a superconducting half-space is calculated. We predict formation of a multiple vortex core characterized by two-scale behavior of the local density of states (LDOS). For coherent tunnelling between the 2D layer and the bulk superconductor, the spectrum has two subgap branches while for incoherent tunnelling only one of them remains. The resulting splitting of the zero-bias anomaly and the multiple peak structure in the LDOS should be visible in the tunnelling spectroscopy experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Open membranes, ribbons and deformed Schild strings

    We analyze open membranes immersed in a magnetic three-form field-strength CC. While cylindrical membranes in the absence of CC behave like tensionless strings, when the CC flux is present the strings polarize into thin membrane ribbons, locally orthogonal to the momentum density, thus providing the strings with an effective tension. The effective dynamics of the ribbons can be described by a simple deformation of the Schild action for null strings. Interactions become non-local due to the polarization, and lead to a deformation of the string field theory, whereby string vertices receive a phase factor proportional to the volume swept out by the ribbons. In a particular limit, this reduces to the non-commutative loop space found previously.Comment: revte
