Charge migration in organic materials: Can propagating charges affect the key physical quantities controlling their motion?
Charge migration is a ubiquitous phenomenon with profound implications
throughout many areas of chemistry, physics, biology and materials science. The
long-term vision of designing functional materials with tailored molecular
scale properties has triggered an increasing quest to identify prototypical
systems where truly molecular conduction pathways play a fundamental role. Such
pathways can be formed due to the molecular organization of various organic
materials and are widely used to discuss electronic properties at the nanometer
scale. Here, we present a computational methodology to study charge propagation
in organic molecular stacks at nano and sub-nanoscales and exploit this
methodology to demonstrate that moving charge carriers strongly affect the
values of the physical quantities controlling their motion. The approach is
also expected to find broad application in the field of charge migration in
soft matter systems.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the Israel Journal

A Spinal Opsin Controls Early Neural Activity and Drives a Behavioral Light Response
SummaryNonvisual detection of light by the vertebrate hypothalamus, pineal, and retina is known to govern seasonal and circadian behaviors [1]. However, the expression of opsins in multiple other brain structures [2–4] suggests a more expansive repertoire for light regulation of physiology, behavior, and development. Translucent zebrafish embryos express extraretinal opsins early on [5, 6], at a time when spontaneous activity in the developing CNS plays a role in neuronal maturation and circuit formation [7]. Though the presence of extraretinal opsins is well documented, the function of direct photoreception by the CNS remains largely unknown. Here, we show that early activity in the zebrafish spinal central pattern generator (CPG) and the earliest locomotory behavior are dramatically inhibited by physiological levels of environmental light. We find that the photosensitivity of this circuit is conferred by vertebrate ancient long opsin A (VALopA), which we show to be a Gαi-coupled receptor that is expressed in the neurons of the spinal network. Sustained photoactivation of VALopA not only suppresses spontaneous activity but also alters the maturation of time-locked correlated network patterns. These results uncover a novel role for nonvisual opsins and a mechanism for environmental regulation of spontaneous motor behavior and neural activity in a circuit previously thought to be governed only by intrinsic developmental programs
Quantum description of spherical spins
The spherical model for spins describes ferromagnetic phase transitions well,
but it fails at low temperatures. A quantum version of the spherical model is
proposed. It does not induce qualitative changes near the phase transition.
However, it produces a physical low temperature behavior. The entropy is
non-negative. Model parameters can be adapted to the description of real
quantum spins. Several applications are discussed. Zero-temperature quantum
phase transitions are analyzed for a ferromagnet and a spin glass in a
transversal field. Their crossover exponents are presented.Comment: 4 pages postscript. Revised version, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Photoactivatable genetically encoded calcium indicators for targeted neuronal imaging.
Circuit mapping requires knowledge of both structural and functional connectivity between cells. Although optical tools have been made to assess either the morphology and projections of neurons or their activity and functional connections, few probes integrate this information. We have generated a family of photoactivatable genetically encoded Ca(2+) indicators that combines attributes of high-contrast photolabeling with high-sensitivity Ca(2+) detection in a single-color protein sensor. We demonstrated in cultured neurons and in fruit fly and zebrafish larvae how single cells could be selected out of dense populations for visualization of morphology and high signal-to-noise measurements of activity, synaptic transmission and connectivity. Our design strategy is transferrable to other sensors based on circularly permutated GFP (cpGFP)
Polarised target for Drell-Yan experiment in COMPASS at CERN, part I
In the polarised Drell-Yan experiment at the COMPASS facility in CERN pion
beam with momentum of 190 GeV/c and intensity about pions/s interacted
with transversely polarised NH target. Muon pairs produced in Drel-Yan
process were detected. The measurement was done in 2015 as the 1st ever
polarised Drell-Yan fixed target experiment. The hydrogen nuclei in the
solid-state NH were polarised by dynamic nuclear polarisation in 2.5 T
field of large-acceptance superconducting magnet. Large helium dilution
cryostat was used to cool the target down below 100 mK. Polarisation of
hydrogen nuclei reached during the data taking was about 80 %. Two oppositely
polarised target cells, each 55 cm long and 4 cm in diameter were used.
Overview of COMPASS facility and the polarised target with emphasis on the
dilution cryostat and magnet is given. Results of the polarisation measurement
in the Drell-Yan run and overviews of the target material, cell and dynamic
nuclear polarisation system are given in the part II.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the 22nd International Spin

Glauber Critical Dynamics: Exact Solution of the Kinetic Gaussian Model
In this paper, we have exactly solved Glauber critical dynamics of the
Gaussian model on three dimensions. Of course, it is much easy to apply to low
dimensional case. The key steps are that we generalize the spin change
mechanism from Glauber's single-spin flipping to single-spin transition and
give a normalized version of the transition probability . We have also
investigated the dynamical critical exponent and found surprisingly that the
dynamical critical exponent is highly universal which refer to that for one-
two- and three-dimensions they have same value independent of spatial
dimensionality in contrast to static (equilibrium) critical exponents.Comment: 9 page
Spherical Model in a Random Field
We investigate the properties of the Gibbs states and thermodynamic
observables of the spherical model in a random field. We show that on the
low-temperature critical line the magnetization of the model is not a
self-averaging observable, but it self-averages conditionally. We also show
that an arbitrarily weak homogeneous boundary field dominates over fluctuations
of the random field once the model transits into a ferromagnetic phase. As a
result, a homogeneous boundary field restores the conventional self-averaging
of thermodynamic observables, like the magnetization and the susceptibility. We
also investigate the effective field created at the sites of the lattice by the
random field, and show that at the critical temperature of the spherical model
the effective field undergoes a transition into a phase with long-range
correlations .Comment: 29 page
Survey of Instantaneous 1-22 GHz Spectra of 550 Compact Extragalactic Objects with Declinations from -30deg to +43deg
We present observational results for extragalactic radio sources with
milliarcsecond components, obtained with the 600 meter ring radio telescope
RATAN-600 from 1st to 22nd December, 1997. For each source, a six frequency
broad band radio spectrum was obtained by observing simultaneously with an
accuracy up to a minute at 1.4, 2.7, 3.9, 7.7, 13 and 31 cm. The observed list
is selected from Preston et al. (1985) VLBI survey and contains all the sources
in the declinations between -30deg and +43deg with a correlated flux density
exceeding 0.1 Jy at 13 cm. The sample includes the majority of sources to be
studied in the current VSOP survey and the future RadioAstron Space VLBI
mission.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables, published in the A&AS; figure 4 with
the broad-band spectra plots is included in the preprint; tables 1 and 5, in
