    In Sweden, where forests cover more than 60% of the land area, silviculture and the use of forest products by industry and society play crucial roles in the national carbon balance. A scientific challenge is to understand how different forest management and wood use strategies can best contribute to climate change mitigation benefits. This study uses a set of models to analyze the effects of different forest management and wood use strategies in Sweden on carbon dioxide emissions and removals through 2105. If the present Swedish forest use strategy is continued, the long-term climate change mitigation benefit will correspond to more than 60 million tons of avoided or reduced emissions of carbon dioxide annually, compared to a scenario with similar consumption patterns in society but where non-renewable products are used instead of forest-based products. On average about 470 kg of carbon dioxide emissions are avoided for each cubic meter of biomass harvested, after accounting for carbon stock changes, substitution effects and all emissions related to forest management and industrial processes. Due to Sweden’s large export share of forest-based products, the climate change mitigation effect of Swedish forestry is larger abroad than within the country. The study also shows that silvicultural methods to increase forest biomass production can further reduce net carbon dioxide emissions by an additional 40 million tons of per year. Forestry’s contribution to climate change mitigation could be significantly increased if management of the boreal forest were oriented towards increased biomass production and if more wood were used to substitute fossil fuels and energy-intensive materials

    Vårt examensarbete gick ut på att skapa en prototyp på en applikation till Team Sportia, Hässleholm, som skulle underlätta garantiregistering vid cykelförsäljning. Den skulle göra sökning och sammställning av information från en Oracle-produktdatabas och en IBM-kunddatabas. Informationen skulle sedan skrivas ut som ett garantikvitto samtidigt som den skulle sparas i en Oracle- eller IBM-databas. Vi skulle kort sagt skapa en applikation som underlättade garantiregistreringen för Team Sportias anställda. Eftersom vi inte kunde testa vår applikation mot Team Sportias miljö behövde vi skapa en med hjälp av IBMs respektive Oracles gratisversioner av sina databaser. De hade tillräcklig funktionalitet för vårt testmiljösyfte. Garantikvittot skulle innehålla all den information som finns på kvittona idag. För att vara säkra på det undersöktes Team Sportias tre olika garantikvitton för att kunna skapa ett liknande i applikationen. Vår applikation fungerar utifrån de premisser vi hade från början. Vad vi inte hade fått reda på var att den enda möjligheten att nå databaserna var att installera applikationen på en server med Citrix. Det här betyder att vi inte kunnat testa vår anslutning mot Team Sportias databaser. Men det ska inte vara något större problem om man vill få över systemet till Citrix-servern. Vi har inte testat anslutningarna på Team Sportia på grund av att systemteknikerna inte haft tid till att hjälpa oss. Vi mätte hur mycket bättre tiden blev genom att skriva garantikvittot med vår applikation. Det tog 3,5 minut att skriva det gamla garantikvittot för hand men med vår prototyp tog det drygt 30 sekunder att skapa ett med samma information. Efter att drivrutinerna lästs in tog det knappt 20 sekunder att skapa kvittot. Vi uppnådde vårt syfte att skapa ett hjälpmedel som underlättade för Team Sportias personal, men vi nådde inte riktigt vårt mål att skapa ett prototypprogram som fungerade i deras befintliga Windowsmiljö

    Patients´ Experiences of Pain Following Day Surgery - At 48 Hours, Seven Days and Three Months

    Recent studies indicate that patients experience pain after day surgery for a longer period than previously known. This requires verification. This was a prospective, descriptive correlational study. A convenience sample of 298 day surgery patients undergoing various surgical procedures was asked to report pain intensity and its interference with daily function 48 hours, seven days and three months after day surgery. Correlation and regression analyses were performed. On a NRS, 55% (n=230) reported pain (≥4) 48 hours after surgery, as did 43% (n=213) at seven days. Pain interfered with normal activities at ≥4 NRS at 48 hours and at seven days, after which it decreased

    Regulation of blood flow through the testicular microvasculature by vasomotion is thought to be important for normal testis function as it regulates interstitial fluid (IF) dynamics which is an important intra-testicular transport medium. Androgens control vasomotion, but how they exert these effects remains unclear. One possibility is by signalling via androgen receptors (AR) expressed in testicular arteriole smooth muscle cells. To investigate this and determine the overall importance of this mechanism in testis function, we generated a blood vessel smooth muscle cell-specific AR knockout mouse (SMARKO). Gross reproductive development was normal in SMARKO mice but testis weight was reduced in adulthood compared to control littermates; this reduction was not due to any changes in germ cell volume or to deficits in testosterone, LH or FSH concentrations and did not cause infertility. However, seminiferous tubule lumen volume was reduced in adult SMARKO males while interstitial volume was increased, perhaps indicating altered fluid dynamics; this was associated with compensated Leydig cell failure. Vasomotion was impaired in adult SMARKO males, though overall testis blood flow was normal and there was an increase in the overall blood vessel volume per testis in adult SMARKOs. In conclusion, these results indicate that ablating arteriole smooth muscle AR does not grossly alter spermatogenesis or affect male fertility but does subtly impair Leydig cell function and testicular fluid exchange, possibly by locally regulating microvascular blood flow within the testis

    In order to grow, tumors need to induce supportive alterations in the tumor-bearing organ, by us named tumor instructed normal tissue (TINT) changes. We now examined if the nature and magnitude of these responses were related to tumor size and aggressiveness. Three different Dunning rat prostate tumor cells were implanted into the prostate of immune-competent rats; 1) fast growing and metastatic MatLyLu tumor cells 2) fast growing and poorly metastatic AT-1 tumor cells, and 3) slow growing and non-metastatic G tumor cells. All tumor types induced increases in macrophage, mast cell and vascular densities and in vascular cell-proliferation in the tumor-bearing prostate lobe compared to controls. These increases occurred in parallel with tumor growth. The most pronounced and rapid responses were seen in the prostate tissue surrounding MatLyLu tumors. They were, also when small, particularly effective in attracting macrophages and stimulating growth of not only micro-vessels but also small arteries and veins compared to the less aggressive AT-1 and G tumors. The nature and magnitude of tumor-induced changes in the tumor-bearing organ are related to tumor size but also to tumor aggressiveness. These findings, supported by previous observation in patient samples, suggest that one additional way to evaluate prostate tumor aggressiveness could be to monitor its effect on adjacent tissues

    1H HRMAS NMR Derived Bio-markers Related to Tumor Grade, Tumor Cell Fraction, and Cell Proliferation in Prostate Tissue Samples

    A high-resolution magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopic approach is presented for evaluating the occurrence, amount and aggressiveness of cancer in human prostate tissue samples. Using this technique, key metabolites in malignant and non-malignant samples (n = 149) were identified, and patterns of their relative abundance were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods. Ratios of various metabolites – including (glycerophophorylcholine + phosphorylcholine)/creatine, myo-inositol/scyllo-inositol, scyllo-inositol/creatine, choline/creatine, and citrate/creatine – correlated with: i) for non-malignant tissue samples, the distance to the nearest tumor and its Gleason score and; ii) the fraction of tumor cells present in the sample; and iii) tumor cell proliferation (Ki67 labelling index). This NMR-based approach allows the extraction of information that could be useful for developing novel diagnostic methods for prostate cancer

    Stromal PDGFRβ Expression in Prostate Tumors and Non-Malignant Prostate Tissue Predicts Prostate Cancer Survival

    Background: The identification of new prognostic markers for prostate cancer is highly warranted, since it is difficult to identify patients requiring curative treatment. Data from both experimental models and clinical samples have identified important functions of PDGFRb on pericytes and fibroblasts in the tumor stroma. Methodology/Principal Findings: In this study the prognostic significance of PDGFRb in prostate cancer stroma, and in matched non-malignant tissue, was evaluated with immunohistochemistry. PDGFRb expression was analyzed in normal and tumor stroma from more than 300 prostate cancer patients. High PDGFRb expression in tumor stroma was associated with large tumor size, advanced stage, high Gleason score and high vessel density. Perivascular PDGFRb staining in tumors was also correlated with high Gleason score. Correlations were also observed between PDGFRb status in tumor stroma and nonmalignant stroma. Similarly, high PDGFRb expression in adjacent non-malignant tissue stroma correlated with large tumor size, advanced stage, high Gleason score and proliferation in non-malignant epithelium. Interestingly, high levels of PDGFRb in the stroma of tumor and non-malignant tissue were associated with shorter cancer specific survival in prostate cancer patients.
