    You Don’t Always Get What You Want: Lessons to Be Learned from the Demise of Maine’s Local Assessment System

    The recent repeal of Maine’s local education assessment requirement was met with mixed reactions ranging from relief to outrage. That there were such differing responses points to the fact that “assessment” in education is understood in diverse and sometimes contradictory ways. In this article, Rebecca Berger looks retrospectively at how the problems associated with implementing Maine’s local assessment system (LAS) were caused by a lack of understanding of important aspects of assessment as it relates to standards-based reform in education. Using examples from her case study of one Maine school district, Berger notes three areas of ongoing concern: lack of capacity at state and local levels to implement change; problems with alignment of curricula and assessments; and competing priorities among current federal and state reforms. Berger concludes with advice for Maine policymakers as they consider future standards-based reform efforts

    Teacher Capacity and Assessment Reform: Assumptions of Policy, Realities of Practice

    Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2005An aspect of the standards movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s was a focus on assessment that dominated all levels of formal education. Policy makers attempted to influence educational reform through the adoption of standards that were used to drive curriculum and assessment decisions. Concurrently, other advocates for assessment reform criticized the reliance on standardized testing as a measure of student achievement and proposed the use of other methods to capture student performance. Expanded use of classroom assessment was also encouraged. Unexamined assumptions about teaching and learning underlie assessment reform efforts; this leads to proposed reforms that serve different ends with little shared understanding of assessment purposes or desired outcomes across populations. Using a qualitative design, this research examined how teachers interpret and enact assessment reform given the unexamined assumptions and contradictions that beset reform efforts. Observation, interviews and document collection formed the bulk of the data. Data were collected and analyzed from individual teachers, administrators, and teacher committees. The analysis utilized the concept of teacher capacity in order to examine both individual and collective responses to reform implementation. Currently, the educational policies of most states link standards, curriculum and assessment in an attempt to control all aspects of the educational enterprise. The research findings indicate that use of this hyperrationalized approach adversely affects individual and collective teacher capacity and can constrict or eliminate practitioners' individual and collective attempts at creativity and innovation

    Prediction of Children\u27s Early Academic Adjustment from Their Temperament: The Moderating Role of Peer Temperament

    The goal of the study was to examine whether target children’s temperamental negative emotional expressivity (NEE) and effortful control in the fall of kindergarten predicted academic adjustment in the spring and whether a classmate’s NEE and effortful control moderated these relations. Target children’s NEE and effortful control were measured in the fall via multiple methods, academic adjustment was measured via reading and math standardized tests in the spring, and observations of engagement in the classroom were conducted throughout the year. In the fall, teachers nominated a peer with whom each target child spent the most time and rated that peer’s temperament. Target children with high effortful control had high reading and math achievement (ps = .04 and \u3c .001, respectively), and children with low NEE increased in engagement during the year (p \u3c .001). Peers’ temperament did not have a direct relation to target children’s academic adjustment. Peers’ NEE, however, moderated the relation between target children’s effortful control, as well as NEE, and changes in engagement (ps = .03 and .05, respectively). Further, peers’ effortful control moderated the relations between target children’s NEE and reading and changes in engagement (ps = .02 and .04, respectively). In each case, target children’s temperament predicted the outcome in expected directions more strongly when peers had low NEE or high effortful control. Results are discussed in terms of how children’s temperamental qualities relate to academic adjustment, and how the relation between NEE and changes in engagement, in particular, depends on peers’ temperament

    Endothelin-1 Predicts Hemodynamically Assessed Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in HIV Infection.

    BackgroundHIV infection is an independent risk factor for PAH, but the underlying pathogenesis remains unclear. ET-1 is a robust vasoconstrictor and key mediator of pulmonary vascular homeostasis. Higher levels of ET-1 predict disease severity and mortality in other forms of PAH, and endothelin receptor antagonists are central to treatment, including in HIV-associated PAH. The direct relationship between ET-1 and PAH in HIV-infected individuals is not well described.MethodsWe measured ET-1 and estimated pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) with transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in 106 HIV-infected individuals. Participants with a PASP ≥ 30 mmHg (n = 65) underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) to definitively diagnose PAH. We conducted multivariable analysis to identify factors associated with PAH.ResultsAmong 106 HIV-infected participants, 80% were male, the median age was 52 years and 77% were on antiretroviral therapy. ET-1 was significantly associated with higher values of PASP [14% per 0.1 pg/mL increase in ET-1, p = 0.05] and PASP ≥ 30 mmHg [PR (prevalence ratio) = 1.24, p = 0.012] on TTE after multivariable adjustment for PAH risk factors. Similarly, among the 65 individuals who underwent RHC, ET-1 was significantly associated with higher values of mean pulmonary artery pressure and PAH (34%, p = 0.003 and PR = 2.43, p = 0.032, respectively) in the multivariable analyses.ConclusionsHigher levels of ET-1 are independently associated with HIV-associated PAH as hemodynamically assessed by RHC. Our findings suggest that excessive ET-1 production in the setting of HIV infection impairs pulmonary endothelial function and contributes to the development of PAH

    Incidence and severity of paravalvular aortic regurgitation with multidetector computed tomography nominal area oversizing or undersizing after transcatheter heart valve replacement with the Sapien 3 : a comparison with the Sapien XT.

    Objectives : This study sought to compare the influence of the extent of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) area oversizing on the incidence of paravalvular aortic regurgitation (PAR) between the Sapien 3 and the Sapien XT transcatheter heart valve (THV) to define a new MDCT sizing guideline suitable for the Sapien 3 platform. Background : The inverse relationship of PAR occurrence and oversizing has been demonstrated for the Sapien XT but the incidence of PAR with comparable oversizing with the Sapien 3 is not known. Methods : Sixty-one prospectively enrolled patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement with the Sapien 3 THV were compared with 92 patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement with the Sapien XT THV. Patients were categorized depending on the degree of MDCT area oversizing percentage: undersizing (below 0%), 0% to 5%, 5% to 10%, and above 10%. The primary endpoint was mild or greater PAR on transthoracic echocardiography. Results : Mild or greater PAR was present in 19.7% of patients (12 of 61) in the Sapien 3 group and in 54.3% of patients (50 of 92) in the Sapien XT group (p 10% (p for interaction = 0.54). Moderate or severe PAR rates were also lower in the Sapien 3 group than in the Sapien XT group (3.3% vs. 13.0%, p = 0.04). In the Sapien 3 group, a MDCT area oversizing percentage value of =4.17% was identified as the optimal cutoff value to discriminate patients with or without mild or greater PAR. Conclusions : Our retrospective analysis suggests that the Sapien 3 THV displays significantly lower rates of PAR than does the Sapien XT THV. A lesser degree of MDCT area oversizing may be employed for this new balloon-expandable THV

    Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas

    Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN

    Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
