    Efficiency of initiating cell adhesion in hydrodynamic flow

    We theoretically investigate the efficiency of initial binding between a receptor-coated sphere and a ligand-coated wall in linear shear flow. The mean first passage time for binding decreases monotonically with increasing shear rate. Above a saturation threshold of the order of a few 100 receptor patches, the binding efficiency is enhanced only weakly by increasing their number and size, but strongly by increasing their height. This explains why white blood cells in the blood flow adhere through receptor patches localized to the tips of microvilli, and why malaria-infected red blood cells form elevated receptor patches (knobs).Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 Postscript figures included, to appear in PR

    Defect-induced spin-glass magnetism in incommensurate spin-gap magnets

    We study magnetic order induced by non-magnetic impurities in quantum paramagnets with incommensurate host spin correlations. In contrast to the well-studied commensurate case where the defect-induced magnetism is spatially disordered but non-frustrated, the present problem combines strong disorder with frustration and, consequently, leads to spin-glass order. We discuss the crossover from strong randomness in the dilute limit to more conventional glass behavior at larger doping, and numerically characterize the robust short-range order inherent to the spin-glass phase.     The idea of rare event sampling is applied to the estimation of the performance of error-correcting codes. The essence of the idea is importance sampling of the pattern of noises in the channel by Multicanonical Monte Carlo, which enables efficient estimation of tails of the distribution of bit error rate.     FFLO oscillations and magnetic domains in the Hubbard model with off-diagonal Coulomb repulsion

    We observe the effect of non-zero magnetization m onto the superconducting ground state of the one dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with correlated hopping X. For t/2 < X < 2t/3, the system first manifests Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) oscillations in the pair-pair correlations. For m = m1 a kinetic energy driven macroscopic phase separation into low-density superconducting domains and high-density polarized walls takes place.
