    We present a simple two-field model of inflation and show how to embed it in string theory as a straightforward generalization of axion monodromy models. Phenomenologically, the predictions are equivalent to those of chaotic inflation, and in particular include observably large tensor modes. The whole high-scale large-field inflationary dynamics takes place within a region of field space that is parametrically subplanckian in diameter, hence improving our ability to control quantum corrections and achieve slow-roll inflation

    Inspired by the multicanonical approach to simulations of first-order phase transitions we propose for qq-state Potts models a combination of cluster updates with reweighting of the bond configurations in the Fortuin-Kastelein-Swendsen-Wang representation of this model. Numerical tests for the two-dimensional models with q=7,10q=7, 10 and 2020 show that the autocorrelation times of this algorithm grow with the system size VV as τVα\tau \propto V^\alpha, where the exponent takes the optimal random walk value of α1\alpha \approx 1.Comment: 3 pages, uuencoded compressed postscript file, contribution to the LATTICE'94 conferenc

    Am 26.02.2002 hat die von der Bundesministerin der Justiz auf Empfehlung der Regierungskommission Corporate Governance eingesetzte Kodex-Kommission den Deutschen Corporate Governance Kodex (im folgenden: DCG-Kodex/Kodex) vorgelegt. Mit Inkrafttreten des Transparenz- und Publizitätsgesetzes4, voraussichtlich im August 2002, werden Vorstand und Aufsichtsrat börsennotierter Aktiengesellschaften künftig jährlich zu erklären haben, ob sie den Empfehlungen des Kodex folgen, und, soweit dies nicht der Fall ist, Abweichungen offen zu legen haben. Im folgenden ist zunächst das Kodex-Konzept, das dem angelsächsischen Rechtskreis entstammt, zu erläutern und die mit dem DCG-Kodex verfolgte Zielsetzung vorzustellen (dazu B.). Dem schließt sich ein Überblick über Regelungstechnik und Inhalt des DCG-Kodex sowie dessen gesetzliche „Flankierung“ durch das TransPuG an (dazu C.). Sodann werden die Entsprechens-Erklärung (dazu D.) sowie Haftungsfragen im Zusammenhang mit dem DCG-Kodex (dazu E.) behandelt

    Investigating thermodynamic properties of liquid-solid transitions of flexible homopolymers with elastic bonds by means of multicanonical Monte Carlo simulations, we find crystalline conformations that resemble ground-state structures of Lennard-Jones clusters. This allows us to set up a structural classification scheme for finite-length flexible polymers and their freezing mechanism in analogy to atomic cluster formation. Crystals of polymers with "magic length" turn out to be perfectly icosahedral

    Classically entangled optical beams for high-speed kinematic sensing

    Tracking the kinematics of fast-moving objects is an important diagnostic tool for science and engineering. Existing optical methods include high-speed CCD/CMOS imaging, streak cameras, lidar, serial time-encoded imaging and sequentially timed all-optical mapping. Here, we demonstrate an entirely new approach to positional and directional sensing based on the concept of classical entanglement in vector beams of light. The measurement principle relies on the intrinsic correlations existing in such beams between transverse spatial modes and polarization. The latter can be determined from intensity measurements with only a few fast photodiodes, greatly outperforming the bandwidth of current CCD/CMOS devices. In this way, our setup enables two-dimensional real-time sensing with temporal resolution in the GHz range.
