    Nonionic Hydrophilic Surfaces: Adsorption and Interactions

    An overview is given of recent studies of nonionic, hydrophilic surfaces formed by the adsorption of surfactants or surface active polymers. Hydrophobic surfaces can be easily hydrophilized by the adsorption of nonionic surfactants or block copolymers containing hydrophobic chain segments; the cooperative interaction between the hydrocarbon moieties contributes more to the free energy of adsorption than the interaction with the hydro- phobic surface. Hydrophilic layers are also readily formed on hydrophilic surfaces provided specific interaction between the hydrophilic end groups and the surface creates a sufficiently hydrophobic surface so that a second layer can be formed through cooperative interaction. The temperature dependence of the interaction forces between layers of surfactants can be closely correlated with their phase equilibria with water. In order to prevent protein adsorption the surface should be neither charged nor hydrophobic; it is shown that, accordingly, protein adsorption is extremely low on polyethylene oxide-covered surfaces

    Laboratory Testing of Solar Combi System with Compact Long Term PCM Heat Storage

    AbstractTo enable the transition from fossil fuels as a primary heat source for domestic hot water preparation and space heating solar thermal energy has great potential. The heat from the sun has the disadvantage that it is not always available when there is a demand. To solve this mismatch a thermal seasonal storage can be used to store excess heat from the summer to the winter when the demand is higher than the supply. Installing a long term thermal storage in a one family house it needs to be compact and sensible heat storages are not suitable. A latent heat storage with a phase change material (PCM) can provide a more compact way of storing heat. Sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) is a good candidate material as it has a relatively high heat of fusion and in addition it has the ability to supercool to room temperature without solidifying. In this paper results from the test of a solar combi system with a latent heat storage with SAT is presented. The SAT heat storage modules were heated to 80°C by the solar collectors 53 times in the test period from June to November 2015 and this enabled the modules to supercool. Supercooling was achieved for 39 days for a SAT module after which 11 kWh of heat were discharged

    Small intestinal CD103+ dendritic cells display unique functional properties that are conserved between mice and humans

    A functionally distinct subset of CD103+ dendritic cells (DCs) has recently been identified in murine mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) that induces enhanced FoxP3+ T cell differentiation, retinoic acid receptor signaling, and gut-homing receptor (CCR9 and α4ÎČ7) expression in responding T cells. We show that this function is specific to small intestinal lamina propria (SI-LP) and MLN CD103+ DCs. CD103+ SI-LP DCs appeared to derive from circulating DC precursors that continually seed the SI-LP. BrdU pulse-chase experiments suggested that most CD103+ DCs do not derive from a CD103− SI-LP DC intermediate. The majority of CD103+ MLN DCs appear to represent a tissue-derived migratory population that plays a central role in presenting orally derived soluble antigen to CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. In contrast, most CD103− MLN DCs appear to derive from blood precursors, and these cells could proliferate within the MLN and present systemic soluble antigen. Critically, CD103+ DCs with similar phenotype and functional properties were present in human MLN, and their selective ability to induce CCR9 was maintained by CD103+ MLN DCs isolated from SB Crohn's patients. Thus, small intestinal CD103+ DCs represent a potential novel target for regulating human intestinal inflammatory responses

    Shortest path queries in rectilinear worlds

    Abstract In this paper, a data structure is given for two and higher dimensional shortest path queries. For a set of n axis-parallel rectangles in the plane, or boxes in d-space, and a fixed target, it is possible with this structure to find a shortest rectilinear path avoiding all rectangles or boxes from any point to this target. Alternatively, it is possible to find the length of the path. The metric considered is a generalization of the Ll-metric and the link metric, where the length of a path is its L1-Iength plus some (fixed) constant times the number of turns on the path. The data structure has size 0« n log n )d-l), and a query takes O(logd-l n) time (plus the output size if the path must be reported). As a byproduct, a relatively simple solution to the single shot problem is obtained; the shortest path between two given points can be computed in time O(ndlogn) for d ~ 3, and in time 0(n 2 ) in the plane

    Critical solutions in topologically gauged N=8 CFTs in three dimensions

    In this paper we discuss some special (critical) background solutions that arise in topological gauged N=8{\mathcal N}=8 three-dimensional CFTs with SO(N) gauge group. These solutions solve the TMG equations (containing the parameters Ό\mu and ll) for a certain set of values of Όl\mu l obtained by varying the number of scalar fields with a VEV. Apart from Minkowski, chiral round AdS3AdS_3 and null-warped AdS3AdS_3 (or Schr\"odinger(z=2)) we identify also a more exotic solution recently found in TMGTMG by Ertl, Grumiller and Johansson. We also discuss the spectrum, symmetry breaking pattern and the supermultiplet structure in the various backgrounds and argue that some properties are due to their common origin in a conformal phase. Some of the scalar fields, including all higgsed ones, turn out to satisfy three-dimensional singleton field equations. Finally, we note that topologically gauged N=6{\mathcal N}=6 ABJ(M) theories have a similar, but more restricted, set of background solutions.Comment: 34 pages, v2: minor corrections, note about a new solution added in final section, v3: two footnotes adde
