Sprachliche Integration: mittelalterliche Ortsnamen im Kontaktgebiet des Kantons St. Gallen

The article deals with toponyms in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland with regard to language contact. Since the emergence of the Romance language in late antiquity (3rd-6th century AD) and until the Germanisation in the early Middle Ages (ca. from the 9th century until ca. the 14th century) St. Gallen has functioned in an interaction of two languages: Old Romansh and Old High German. This sequence can still be identified in a considerable number of toponyms. Here we want, first, to show how Romansh toponyms were transferred to Swiss German and, second, to discuss the methodological challenges facing toponymists when dealing with names in contact areas. Based on the categorization of Nicolaisen (1996) various types of adaptational processes such as translations, analogical re-formation and re-interpretation are illustrated and discussed using names and historical name data from the database «Flurnamen des Kantons St. Gallen». Two important categories in this regard are phonological adaptation and morphological translation. Finally, the study offers an insight into how toponomastics in an ancient contact area can help to reconstruct an extinct language, i.e. Old Romansh.

Jäggi, Jenny, Marti, Frehner, Batt und Co. Heiligennamen in Familiennamen und anderen Namenklassen der Schweiz

Namen von Heiligen sind in allen Namenklassen mehr oder weniger offensichtlich vorhanden. Der folgende Aufsatz zeigt, dass universale, aber auch lokale Heiligenkulte in Schweizer FamN ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben. Exemplarisch werden acht Heilige ausgewählt, das Namenspektrum wird formal analysiert und in seinem räumlichen Auftreten verortet. Dabei zeigt sich für die Universalkulte Jakob, Johannes und Jodok eine West-Ost-Staffelung, die lokalkulte wie Regula oder Beat treten sehr kleinräumig auf. In einem Ausblick werden zwei Heilige und ihre Spuren in anderen Namenklassen untersucht. Diese Namen sind teilweise historisch gewachsen wie das Toponym St. Jakob, aber auch bewusste Kreationen wie der BierN Chopfab

Wie findet man Familiennamennester? Am Beispiel Entlebuch (Luzern) und Frutigen (Bern) im Vergleich

The aim of this empirical study is to present and analyze the most frequent family names of two remote areas in Switzerland: the Entlebuch in Lucerne and Frutigen in Berne. On the one hand I present a general methodology of how typical surnames can be investigated. On the other hand I exemplify this methodology with the data of the aforementioned areas. The surnames are analyzed with respect to their etymology, the frequency of semantic types, their phonology and spelling as well as name formation. One of the sources of data is the fixed network telephone lines from 2002. A second source that provides a diachronic perspective is the so called Familiennamenbuch (book of family names) of Switzerland. It alphabetically lists surnames with citizenship in Switzerland, naming the communities and the year resp. the century in which the citizenship was granted. Information of both sources mapped together can show centers, “nests”, historical growth and geographical distribution of surnames. I found that the frequency of the five semantic types corresponds with the sociological conditions of rural areas: names based on the place of residence, patronyms and nicknames are the most frequent ones. The surnames reflect Alemannic phonology and spelling. The formation of the surnames shows common German patterns next to specific upper German respectively Alemannic ones
