Light-heavy ion measurements in CR-39 located on the Earth side of LDEF

    Get PDF
The azimuthal angle distribution and the charge and energy spectra of selected light-heavy (5 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 8) stopping particles were measured in a single layer of CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector (PNTD) from the stack of the A0015 experiment located on the Earth-end of the LDEF satellite. The directional incidence of the trapped protons is studied by comparing the azimuthal angle distribution of selected recoils, obtained in the LDEF detectors, to that obtained through calibrations of PNTD's with exposures performed with 200 MeV proton beams from different directions

Fast sampling control of a class of differential linear repetitive processes

    Get PDF
Repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D linear systems of practical and theoretical interest. Most of the available control theory for them is for the case of linear dynamics and focuses on systems theoretic properties such as stability and controllability/observability. This paper uses an extension of standard, or 1D, feedback control schemes to control a physically relevant sub-class of these processes

Stability Tests for a Class of 2D Continuous-Discrete Linear Systems with Dynamic Boundary Conditions

Repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D systems of both practical and theoretical interest. Their essential characteristic is repeated sweeps, termed passes, through a set of dynamics defined over a finite duration with explicit interaction between the outputs, or pass profiles, produced as the system evolves. Experience has shown that these processes cannot be studied/controlled by direct application of existing theory (in all but a few very restrictive special cases). This fact, and the growing list of applications areas, has prompted an on-going research programme into the development of a 'mature' systems theory for these processes for onward translation into reliable generally applicable controller design algorithms. This paper develops stability tests for a sub-class of so-called differential linear repetitive processes in the presence of a general set of initial conditions, where it is known that the structure of these conditions is critical to their stability properties

Federal Antitrust Law-Sherman Act-Resale Restrictions in Agreements Between Manufacturer and Distributors

Defendant, a manufacturer of heavy trucks, entered into agreements with its wholesale distributors and retail dealers whereby the distributors and dealers agreed to resell defendant\u27s trucks at prices fixed by defendant. They also agreed to restrict their sales to customers located within the territories designated by defendant and to allow defendant to deal directly with all government accounts. The Justice Department, charging violation of sections I and 3 of the Sherman Act, brought a civil suit to enjoin defendant from continuing or renewing any of the aforementioned arrangements. On plaintiff\u27s motion for summary judgment, held, motion granted. Vertical agreements involving resale price maintenance and the allocation of territories and customers are unreasonable per se violations of the Sherman Act. United States v. White Motor Co., 194 F. Supp. 562 (N.D. Ohio 1961), jurisdiction noted, 82 Sup. Ct. 946 (1962)

Negligence--Assumption of Risk and Contributory Negligence--Abolition of Assumption of Risk as a Defense Separate From a Contributory Negligence in Autobmobile Guest-Host Situations NEGLIGENCE IN AUTOMOBILE GUEST-HOST SITUATION

Plaintiff, a guest in an automobile driven by defendant, was injured when defendant\u27s vehicle collided with another car. In plaintiff\u27s suit against defendant and her insurer the jury found that defendant was causally negligent as to management and control and position on the highway, and that plaintiff was causally negligent as to lookout. After apportioning 85 percent of the negligence to defendant and 15 percent to plaintiff, the jury found that plaintiff had assumed the risk with respect to defendant\u27s management and control and position on the highway, and the trial court therefore entered judgment dismissing the complaint. On appeal, held, reversed. In Wisconsin, hereafter, an automobile driver owes to his guest the same duty of ordinary care that he owes to others; a guest\u27s assumption of risk, previously implied from his willingness to proceed in the face of a known hazard, is no longer a defense apart from contributory negligence; and if a guest\u27s exposure of himself to a particular hazard is unreasonable and a failure to exercise ordinary care for his own safety, such conduct constitutes negligence, and is subject to the provisions of the state\u27s comparative negligence statute.McConville v. State Farm Mut. Auto. Ins. Co., 113 N.W.2d 14 (Wis. I 962)

Criminal Procedure - Search and Seizure - Federal Court Injunction Against State Officer to Suppress Illegally Obtained Evidence in State Court

Federal customs enforcement officers suspected plaintiff of theft from a waterfront pier. In the course of their investigation they searched plaintiff\u27s home without a search warrant and detained plaintiff for questioning without first bringing him before a federal commissioner. Both acts violated the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure. Defendant, a state officer, although not a participant in the search, was present during the illegal detention at the invitation of the federal officers. Plaintiff obtained an order in federal district court enjoining defendant from giving any testimony or producing any evidence in state criminal proceedings against him with respect to property illegally seized during the search and to statements obtained during the illegal detention. On appeal, held, affirmed, one judge dissenting. In the exercise of its supervisory powers over federal law enforcement agencies a federal court has the power to enjoin a state official from testifying in a state proceeding to information obtained by federal officers in an illegal search and an illegal detention. Macroevolutionary Patterns In The Evolutionary Radiation Of Archosaurs (Tetrapoda: Diapsida)

    Get PDF
The rise of archosaurs during the Triassic and Early Jurassic has been treated as a classic example of an evolutionary radiation in the fossil record. This paper reviews published studies and provides new data on archosaur lineage origination, diversity and lineage evolution, morphological disparity, rates of morphological character change, and faunal abundance during the Triassic–Early Jurassic. The fundamental archosaur lineages originated early in the Triassic, in concert with the highest rates of character change. Disparity and diversity peaked later, during the Norian, but the most significant increase in disparity occurred before maximum diversity. Archosaurs were rare components of Early–Middle Triassic faunas, but were more abundant in the Late Triassic and pre-eminent globally by the Early Jurassic. The archosaur radiation was a drawn-out event and major components such as diversity and abundance were discordant from each other. Crurotarsans (crocodile-line archosaurs) were more disparate, diverse, and abundant than avemetatarsalians (bird-line archosaurs, including dinosaurs) during the Late Triassic, but these roles were reversed in the Early Jurassic. There is no strong evidence that dinosaurs outcompeted or gradually eclipsed crurotarsans during the Late Triassic. Instead, crurotarsan diversity decreased precipitously by the end-Triassic extinction, which helped usher in the age of dinosaurian dominance
