Search 4.0 : integration and cooperation confluence in scientific information discovery
Conceptual inicial (funcionalidades base) e reafirmar a importância relativa
This research work aims at designing and evaluating a model for an innovative
bibliographic information search system (a Scientific Information Integration,
Discovery, Recommendation and Access Service), where not only the
document (book, article, dissertation, thesis, etc.) is the point of reference, but
to a new extent, the users themselves and all their activities within the Service
or in social networks, by sharing and commenting resources found in the
Service, assuming a crucial dimension of generating additional information by
the users of the system (enhanced by computer agents aggregators of
information), fostering social networks and communities of practice. It is
intended by this project to enable UA’s Libraries to better perform the role
reinforced by the Bologna Process, of complementary space for informal
learning, socially facilitated by its users, enabling information discovery and
sharing.
The scientific community is undergoing one of the most dynamic and
demanding times of its existence. Never in its history, the community was so
extensive, never published as much as today, never the knowledge life cycle
was so short. New data, new interpretations, new theories and new members
emerge every day: the number of publications is immense, and it is not always
clear how to construct a search strategy that proves to be effective and
efficient, so to obtain relevant and significant information.
In addition to the study, design, selection and assessment of each component
and the system as a whole, it aimed at identifying the participatory,
collaborative habits of this system’s users and potential capital gains in the
creation and identification of communities focused on the several areas of
research covered by the University of Aveiro, by aggregating significant sets of
resources and services that until now were dispersed, powering them with
innovative features, some of them a mashup made of data obtained in real time
from external services, but more than that, to promote the logic cooperation of
users of such resources, whom can take advantage of comments from those
that have used them before, but also can add value and see the local indexed
resources’ social network.
Thus, it is advanced the term "Search 4.0" for this new paradigm of search,
discovery, access, recommendation and sharing of resources, resulting from a
natural social dynamic amongst the four key elements – user, resources,
semantic mapping of metadata (several million records indexed locally) and
user’s communities (their peers, users with common interests). In full
interaction enhanced by the system, these four elements generate a dynamic
social network, self-sustainable and with guarantee of future preservation, a
social network not only of human actors but also resources taking themselves
the role of actors, much like “Things” on the Web 4.0.
Taken as the central point is the bibliographic collection of UA’s libraries and
the "ecosystem" of users and their use of the same, added with, to the extent
where it was feasible, information from other sources, both at the level of the
end results or as an aid to the search itself (guidance). Hence, it is intended by
this research to evaluate the degree to which information discovery is levered
and made easier by combining information integration and participatory,
cooperative components.
Starting from the Initial Research Question, an initial Conceptual Model was
elaborated, built upon the knowledge originated from the literature review and
the researcher’s professional practice. Between 2010 and 2018 data was
collected in 3 key moments: two Surveys per Questionnaire (an extensive initial
survey in January/February 2010 – more than 4,200 complete responses, and
a final in July/August 2018), complemented by four Focus Groups held
between February and March 2013; their results’ analysis allowed refining and
thus advance a final proposal for that Conceptual Model.
Considering the outputs of the results obtained in the first survey analysis, and
its presentation and discussion in the Community (Conferences and Doctoral
Summer Schools), the structural elements of the refined Conceptual Model
resulting from that analysis started to be designed and implemented. For that
purpose, VuFind Open Source solution was used, being the researcher actively
involved with VuFind international community during its implementation and
analysis, over more than 2 years (between 2011 and 2013). Having this system
in a full production ready status, it enabled the Focus Groups to take place,
using that implementation as a base demonstration service (with more than 8,5
million loaded records and the Rating (stars), Sharing and Discussion
components, developed by the author for the Vufind community, already
implemented and fully functional), complemented with conceptual components.
From the four Focus Groups (Library Professionals [SBIDM-UA],
Undergraduate Students [1st cycle], Graduate Students [2nd and 3rd cycles] and
Professors and Researchers) resulted not only the confirmation of the results
obtained within the initial survey (but with a more detailed analysis and
understanding of the “why”), but above all, a very practical resolution regarding
the Conceptual Model to be proposed: a common denominator was that their
participants considered both the participatory components, and the
components of Community/Thematic groups, do retain value in Information
Discovery via recommendation of other resources; yet, they do prefer most of
these features/services to be optional, holding this way full control over them
(whether they are active or not in their profile).
Although different, with the first survey also focusing on the search habits of UA
users, the latter had the same questions concerning their presence in Social
Networks and their valorisation of the cooperation functionalities (participatory
components and Communities). The results obtained in 2018’s perfect
alignment with those of 2010 (questions common to both) was a surprise, but
thus validating a large part of the initial Conceptual Model, particularly in
relation to the basic functionalities, reaffirming also the perceived importance of
such features and cooperative components.
The proposed refined Conceptual Model, resulting from the analysis of data
collected over these 8 years, is now composed of 3 layers, each representing
the three components of this research: the integration of resources from
various sources (which with quality metadata, constitutes the basis of the
service), the participation of users, notably by the addition of extra information
(tags, comments and analysis) or by voting, endows the Conceptual Model
proposed (the Discovery) of more data that allows a more refined and superior
quality recommendation. Finally, Communities grant the system with the
ultimate level of Discovery by taking full advantage of its members participation
or information added by third parties, at the same time that it powers and puts
in context the “intelligence” of the data collected in the first 2 layers (which can
be immense, Big Data), hence providing a much more accurate and pertinent
recommendation to that particular community of users. That is, it potentiates a
superior Artificial intelligence (“AI”) in the recommendation of related resources,
due to its relevance to a certain context or interest of the user.
The term proposed, “Search 4.0”, is a parallel to Web 4.0 (Internet of
Things/IoT). Firstly, per the resemblances with the paradigm mentioned above,
where documents are themselves actors in the network (the “Things” on the
Web 4.0), that have a digital representation (some as digital twins, others
already born 100% digital), and also have Ubiquity, Identity and Connection
(Web 4.0 is all about establishing connections and the ubiquitous activities
carried out in those connections), such as the “things” on the Web 4.0;
secondly, by integrating semantic data, from various sources, with data
captured from documents’ use, it obtains a higher level of Artificial Intelligence
on this recommendation, something that is the most visible aspect and that
holds Web 4.0’s most practical results for the final users.Programa Doutoral em Informação e Comunicação em Plataformas Digitai
Exploring the effect of land use on ecosystem services: the distributive issues
The current debate of ecosystem services has focused more on monetary valuation methods and pay-ments for environmental services (PES) then on the classic economic analysis (i.e. assumptions regarding:sustainability, justice and efficiency). This paper examines, taking into consideration ecosystem services, income distribution from different land uses to stakeholders. We study the Portuguese common landecosystem, which is characterized as having a wide range of ecosystem services. Allowing that all thebenefits can be translated into economic value, we estimated the total economic value (TEV) associatedwith these territories on 5 different land use situations: forest, shrubland, water bodies, mountain agri-culture and other uses, and analyzed the current institutional arrangements around these territories. We found that the distribution of the benefits of different land uses is relatively inequality. The resultsshowed that the contemporary institutional arrangements of wealth distribution ensure a relatively fairdistribution insider of system; however this institutional arrangement is unable to ensure equitable dis-tribution of wealth by external stakeholders. We can conclude that different types of land use provide avery asymmetric distribution of income by different groups of humans: land owners; citizens of a country, and residents of Earth.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
