A Perspective on the 1991 Iowa Crop

    Get PDF
One of the definitions of perspective is to see clearly . I don\u27t claim such ability, especially in late October when neither the final crop yields nor research results are known. Most would call 1991 an unusual crop year, but I\u27m reminded of a former colleague who was fond of saying that in the last 30 years he had yet to see a normal year. Perhaps the best word to describe the 1991 crop year would be crazy. This is especially true when you consider that the state\u27s corn and soybean yields will end up close to average

Critical Role of the International Monetary Fund IMF in the Global Financial System as an International Lender of Last Resort: Effect from Mexico, Russia, And Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to have an in-depth look on how the International Monetary Fund has operated in the global financial crisis and how it has strategically manoeuvred itself as an international lender of last resort as it tackles economic collapses in various affected economic countries. The paper addressed key points on how the International Monetary Fund reacts to  global crisis and how it sets up financial assistance within an economy who seeks financial assistance. The paper however, evaluated the IMF's effects on Mexico, Russia and Zimbabwe who had in the past faced with the same financial situation under different circumstances. Also, the future trend of the International Monetary Fund was discussed thoroughly to determine whether it will continue to act as an international lender of last resort or will it adopt a new measurement of unilateral and regional approaches to create sustainable solutions to future lending among key countries in time of financial distress. Key Words: IMF, MEXICO, RUSSIA, ZIMBABWE, TEQUILA CRISIS/PESO CRISIS

    1992- Another Unusual Crop Season

According to the October Crop Report the 1992 Iowa com and soybean yields are estimated at 135 and 42 bulac, respectively. These numbers may change somewhat in the November and January crop reports; however, there is little question that the crop is a big one. The main concern as of mid-October was getting com dry enough so that harvest can proceed. As the crop matured 10 to 20 days late, it is not surprising that wet grain would be a problem. Ear and stalk rots and grain physical quality problems could also be concerns. With the small acreage set-aside (5%) Iowa farmers are expected to harvest 13.1 million acres of com, 8.1 million acres of soybeans. At present yields this would be the largest com crop in terms of total bushels produced in the state\u27s history. With all the headline producing problems during the year why are yields so high? The answer is ~ at key crop stages. A very dry June in some areas and the extremely cool July and August came close to being major problems. However, except for fields that were replanted for various reasons (hail, dry soils, etc.) or the areas flooded in September, crops are decent in nearly all regions of the state

Theory and praxis of religious tolerance

    Get PDF
More often than not, intolerance is extremely rejected in favour of tolerance simply because of the belief that the latter produces a better chance of inter-personal relationship in a pluralistic society. In this sense tolerance will mean to allow others to practise their religious belief without hindrance. While the term ‘allow’ carries a legal import i.e. authorisation, toleration means only the absence of objection rather than genuine approval of another’s religious belief. It is therefore the argument of this paper that tolerance already divides between the powerful and the less-powerful, the privileged and the less-privileged. It is this inherent weakness in tolerance that makes the paper to insist on frank dialogue; truth-meeting-truth

The 1994 Iowa Crop- Did We Get it Right?

    Get PDF
The answer to the question raised in the title is yes. The October Crop Report estimated Iowa corn and soybean yields at 150 and 51 bu/ac respectively. If maintained in the November and January reports both yields would be records. The prior corn record was 147 bu/ ac in 1992. The soybean yield is an incredible 7 bu/ ac over the previous record of 44 bu/ac set in 1992. If 1994 yield estimates fit historic patterns, the final estimate in January may be even higher than those indicated in Table 1. The 1994 crop is a complete reversal from the terrible 1993 crop when corn and soybean yields were only 80 and 31 bu/ac. Also, with no set-aside in 1994 the poorer land was not held out of production. Perhaps a better title for this paper would be - Mother Nature Gets it Right in 1994
