    The Redshift Distribution of FIRST Radio Sources at 1 mJy

    We present spectra for a sample of radio sources from the FIRST survey, and use them to define the form of the redshift distribution of radio sources at mJy levels.We targeted 365 sources and obtained 46 redshifts (13 per cent of the sample). We find that our sample is complete in redshift measurement to R 18.6\sim 18.6, corresponding to z0.2z\sim 0.2. Early-type galaxies represent the largest subset (45 per cent) of the sample and have redshifts 0.15\la z \la 0.5 ; late-type galaxies make up 15 per cent of the sample and have redshifts 0.05\la z \la 0.2; starbursting galaxies are a small fraction (6\sim 6 per cent), and are very nearby (z\la 0.05). Some 9 per cent of the population have Seyfert1/quasar-type spectra, all at z\ga 0.8, and there are 4 per cent are Seyfert2 type galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z0.2z\sim 0.2). Using our measurements and data from the Phoenix survey, we obtain an estimate for N(z)N(z) at S1.4GHz1S_{1.4 \rm {GHz}}\ge 1 mJy and compare this with model predictions. At variance with previous conclusions, we find that the population of starbursting objects makes up \la 5 per cent of the radio population at S 1\sim 1 mJy.Comment: 20 pages, sumbitted to MNRA

    Young Muslim women's experiences of Islam and physical education in Greece and Britain: a comparative study

    Previous research suggests that Muslim women can experience particular problems when taking physical education (PE) lessons, for example with dress codes, mixed-teaching and exercise during Ramadan; and they can face restrictions in extra-curricular activities for cultural and religious reasons. The area is under-researched and there is little evidence of comparative studies that explore similarities and differences in cross-national experiences, which is the aim of this paper. Two studies conducted in Greece and Britain that explored the views of Muslim women on school experiences of physical education are compared. Both studies focused on diaspora communities, Greek Turkish girls and British Asian women, living in predominantly non-Muslim countries. Growing concerns about global divisions between 'Muslims and the West' make this a particularly pertinent study. Qualitative data were collected by interviews with 24 Greek Muslim women, and 20 British Muslim women. \ud <P> \ud Physical education has national curriculum status and a similar rationale in both countries but with different cultures of formality and tradition, which impacted on pupils' experiences. Data suggested that Greek and British groups held positive views towards physical education but were restricted on their participation in extra-curricular activities. For the British women religious identity and consciousness of Islamic requirements were more evident than for the Greek women. Differences in stages of acculturation, historical and socio-cultural contexts contributed to less problematic encounters with physical education for Greek Muslims who appeared more closely assimilated into the dominant culture

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to examine the effect of PCSK9R46L on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD), and mortality.BackgroundThe 46L allele has been associated with reductions in LDL-C and risk of IHD, but results vary between studies.MethodsWe determined the association of R46L genotype with LDL-C, risk of IHD, myocardial infarction (MI), and mortality in the prospective CCHS (Copenhagen City Heart Study) (n = 10,032) and validated the results in: 1) the cross-sectional CGPS (Copenhagen General Population Study) (n = 26,013); and 2) the case-control CIHDS (Copenhagen Ischemic Heart Disease Study) (n = 9,654). We also performed meta-analyses of present and previous studies (n = 66,698).ResultsIn carriers (2.6%) versus noncarriers, the 46L allele was associated with reductions in LDL-C of 0.35 to 0.55 mmol/l (11% to 16%) from 20 to 80+ years in the general population (CCHS and CGPS; p values <0.0001). Observed risk reductions for IHD in 46L allele carriers were: 6% in the CCHS study (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.94; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.68 to 1.31), 46% in the CGPS study (odds ratio [OR]: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.39 to 0.77), 18% in the CIHDS study (OR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.55 to 1.21), and 30% in the studies combined (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.58 to 0.86). In the CCHS study, HR for mortality was 1.18 (95% CI: 0.93 to 1.50). In meta-analyses, 46L allele carriers had a 12% (0.43 mmol/l) reduction in LDL-C and a 28% reduction in risk of IHD (HR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.62 to 0.84), similar to results in the CCHS, CGPS, and CIHDS studies combined. However, the observed 12% (0.43 mmol/l) reduction in LDL-C theoretically predicted an only 5% reduction in risk of IHD (HR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.92 to 0.97).ConclusionsThe PCSK946L allele was associated with reductions in LDL-C from 20 to 80+ years in the general population. The reduction in risk of IHD was larger than predicted by the observed reduction in LDL-C alone. This could be because genotype is a better predictor of lifelong exposure to LDL-C than LDL-C measured in adult life

    The geomorphological setting of some of Scotland's east coast freshwater mills: a comment on Downward and Skinner (2005) ‘Working rivers: the geomorphological legacy...’

    Many of the water mills on Scotland's east coast streams, unlike those discussed recently by Downward and Skinner (2005 Area 37 138–47), are found in predominantly bedrock reaches immediately downstream of knickpoints (i.e. bedrock steps). Bedrock knickpoints in the lower reaches of Scottish rivers are a widespread fluvial response to the glacio-isostatic rebound of northern Britain. These steps in the river profile propagate headward over time, but for intervals of a few centuries or so they are sufficiently stable to be exploited for the elevational fall necessary to power the mill wheel. Many of these mills were apparently powered by ‘run-of-the-river’, as are some today that formerly had mill dams. The typical lack of sediment storage along the erosional lower reaches of many Scottish rivers means that failure of mill structures in Scotland will probably have less dramatic geomorphological and management implications than those suggested by Downward and Skinner for southern English rivers

    Imaging live bacteria at the nanoscale: comparison of immobilisation strategies

    Atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides an effective, label-free technique enabling the imaging of live bacteria under physiological conditions with nanometre precision. However, AFM is a surface scanning technique, and the accuracy of its performance requires the effective and reliable immobilisation of bacterial cells onto substrates. Here, we compare the effectiveness of various chemical approaches to facilitate the immobilisation of Escherichia coli onto glass cover slips in terms of bacterial adsorption, viability and compatibility with correlative imaging by fluorescence microscopy. We assess surface functionalisation using gelatin, poly-l-lysine, Cell-Tak™, and Vectabond®. We describe how bacterial immobilisation, viability and suitability for AFM experiments depend on bacterial strain, buffer conditions and surface functionalisation. We demonstrate the use of such immobilisation by AFM images that resolve the porin lattice on the bacterial surface; local degradation of the bacterial cell envelope by an antimicrobial peptide (Cecropin B); and the formation of membrane attack complexes on the bacterial membrane

    Association of plasma uric acid with ischaemic heart disease and blood pressure: mendelian randomisation analysis of two large cohorts

    Objectives: To assess the associations between both uric acid levels and hyperuricaemia, with ischaemic heart disease and blood pressure, and to explore the potentially confounding role of body mass index. Design: Mendelian randomisation analysis, using variation at specific genes (SLC2A9 (rs7442295) as an instrument for uric acid; and FTO (rs9939609), MC4R (rs17782313), and TMEM18 (rs6548238) for body mass index). Setting: Two large, prospective cohort studies in Denmark. Participants: We measured levels of uric acid and related covariables in 58 072 participants from the Copenhagen General Population Study and 10 602 from the Copenhagen City Heart Study, comprising 4890 and 2282 cases of ischaemic heart disease, respectively. Main outcome: Blood pressure and prospectively assessed ischaemic heart disease. Results: Estimates confirmed known observational associations between plasma uric acid and hyperuricaemia with risk of ischaemic heart disease and diastolic and systolic blood pressure. However, when using genotypic instruments for uric acid and hyperuricaemia, we saw no evidence for causal associations between uric acid, ischaemic heart disease, and blood pressure. We used genetic instruments to investigate body mass index as a potentially confounding factor in observational associations, and saw a causal effect on uric acid levels. Every four unit increase of body mass index saw a rise in uric acid of 0.03 mmol/L (95% confidence interval 0.02 to 0.04), and an increase in risk of hyperuricaemia of 7.5% (3.9% to 11.1%). Conclusion: By contrast with observational findings, there is no strong evidence for causal associations between uric acid and ischaemic heart disease or blood pressure. However, evidence supports a causal effect between body mass index and uric acid level and hyperuricaemia. This finding strongly suggests body mass index as a confounder in observational associations, and suggests a role for elevated body mass index or obesity in the development of uric acid related conditions

    Complete characterization of ultrashort pulse sources at 1550 nm

    This paper reviews the use of frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) to characterize mode-locked lasers producing ultrashort pulses suitable for high-capacity optical communications systems at wavelengths around 1550 nm, Second harmonic generation (SHG) FROG is used to characterize pulses from a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser, and both single-mode and dual-mode gain-switched semiconductor lasers. The compression of gain-switched pulses in dispersion compensating fiber is also studied using SHG-FROG, allowing optimal compression conditions to be determined without a priori assumptions about pulse characteristics. We also describe a fiber-based FROG geometry exploiting cross-phase modulation and show that it is ideally suited to pulse characterization at optical communications wavelengths. This technique has been used to characterize picosecond pulses with energy as low as 24 pJ, giving results in excellent agreement with SHG-FROG characterization, and without any temporal ambiguity in the retrieved puls
