Efficient growth of complex graph states via imperfect path erasure
Given a suitably large and well connected (complex) graph state, any quantum
algorithm can be implemented purely through local measurements on the
individual qubits. Measurements can also be used to create the graph state:
Path erasure techniques allow one to entangle multiple qubits by determining
only global properties of the qubits. Here, this powerful approach is extended
by demonstrating that even imperfect path erasure can produce the required
graph states with high efficiency. By characterizing the degree of error in
each path erasure attempt, one can subsume the resulting imperfect entanglement
into an extended graph state formalism. The subsequent growth of the improper
graph state can be guided, through a series of strategic decisions, in such a
way as to bound the growth of the error and eventually yield a high-fidelity
graph state. As an implementation of these techniques, we develop an analytic
model for atom (or atom-like) qubits in mismatched cavities, under the
double-heralding entanglement procedure of Barrett and Kok [Phys. Rev. A 71,
060310 (2005)]. Compared to straightforward postselection techniques our
protocol offers a dramatic improvement in growing complex high-fidelity graph

Fast decoders for qudit topological codes
Qudit toric codes are a natural higher-dimensional generalization of the well-
studied qubit toric code. However, standard methods for error correction of
the qubit toric code are not applicable to them. Novel decoders are needed. In
this paper we introduce two renormalization group decoders for qudit codes and
analyse their error correction thresholds and efficiency. The first decoder is
a generalization of a 'hard-decisions' decoder due to Bravyi and Haah
(arXiv:1112.3252). We modify this decoder to overcome a percolation effect
which limits its threshold performance for many-level quantum systems. The
second decoder is a generalization of a 'soft-decisions' decoder due to Poulin
and Duclos-Cianci (2010 Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 050504), with a small cell size
to optimize the efficiency of implementation in the high dimensional case. In
each case, we estimate thresholds for the uncorrelated bit-flip error model
and provide a comparative analysis of the performance of both these approaches
to error correction of qudit toric codes
Marburg hemorrhagic fever in Durba and Watsa, Democratic Republic of the Congo: clinical documentation, features of illness, and treatment
The objective of the present study was to describe day of onset and duration of symptoms of Marburg hemorrhagic fever (MHF), to summarize the treatments applied, and to assess the quality of clinical documentation. Surveillance and clinical records of 77 patients with MHF cases were reviewed. Initial symptoms included fever, headache, general pain, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia (median day of onset, day 1-2), followed by hemorrhagic manifestations (day 5-8+), and terminal symptoms included confusion, agitation, coma, anuria, and shock. Treatment in isolation wards was acceptable, but the quality of clinical documentation was unsatisfactory. Improved clinical documentation is necessary for a basic evaluation of supportive treatment
Laser spectroscopy of aromatic molecules with optical cycling centers: strontium (I) phenoxides
We report the production and spectroscopic characterization of strontium (I)
phenoxide (, or SrOPh) and variants featuring
electron-withdrawing groups designed to suppress vibrational excitation during
spontaneous emission from the electronically excited state. Optical cycling
closure of these species, which is the decoupling of vibrational state changes
from spontaneous optical decay, is found by dispersed laser-induced
fluorescence spectroscopy to be high, in accordance with theoretical
predictions. A high-resolution, rotationally-resolved laser excitation spectrum
is recorded for SrOPh, allowing the estimation of spectroscopic constants and
identification of candidate optical cycling transitions for future work. The
results confirm the promise of strontium phenoxides for laser cooling and

Fluctuations and Instabilities of Ferromagnetic Domain Wall pairs in an External Magnetic Field
Soliton excitations and their stability in anisotropic quasi-1D ferromagnets
are analyzed analytically. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the
lowest lying topological excitations are shown to be either soliton-soliton or
soliton-antisoliton pairs. In ferromagnetic samples of macro- or mesoscopic
size, these configurations correspond to twisted or untwisted pairs of Bloch
walls. It is shown that the fluctuations around these configurations are
governed by the same set of operators. The soliton-antisoliton pair has exactly
one unstable mode and thus represents a critical nucleus for thermally
activated magnetization reversal in effectively one-dimensional systems. The
soliton-soliton pair is stable for small external fields but becomes unstable
for large magnetic fields. From the detailed expression of this instability
threshold and an analysis of nonlocal demagnetizing effects it is shown that
the relative chirality of domain walls can be detected experimentally in thin
ferromagnetic films. The static properties of the present model are equivalent
to those of a nonlinear sigma-model with anisotropies. In the limit of large

Baseline Psychological Traits Contribute to Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness Score at High Altitude

Baseline psychological traits contribute to Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness score at high altitude. High Alt Med Biol. 23:69-77, 2022. Background: Interoception refers to an individual's ability to sense their internal bodily sensations. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a common feature of ascent to high altitude that is only partially explained by measures of peripheral physiology. We hypothesized that interoceptive ability may explain the disconnect between measures of physiology and symptom experience in AMS. Methods: Two groups of 18 participants were recruited to complete a respiratory interoceptive task three times at 2-week intervals. The control group remained in Birmingham (140 m altitude) for all three tests. The altitude group completed test 1 in Birmingham, test 2 the day after arrival at 2,624 m, and test 3 at 2,728 m after an 11-day trek at high altitude (up to 4,800 m). Results: By measuring changes to metacognitive performance, we showed that acute ascent to altitude neither presented an interoceptive challenge, nor acted as interoceptive training. However, AMS symptom burden throughout the trek was found to relate to sea level measures of anxiety, agoraphobia, and neuroticism. Conclusions: This suggests that the Lake Louise AMS score is not solely a reflection of physiological changes on ascent to high altitude, despite often being used as such by researchers and commercial trekking companies alike.
