    Process Algebra for Modal Transition Systemses

    The formalism of modal transition systems (MTS) is a well established framework for systems specification as well as abstract interpretation. Nevertheless, due to incapability to capture some useful features, various extensions have been studied, such as e.g. mixed transition systems or disjunctive MTS. Thus a need to compare them has emerged. Therefore, we introduce transition system with obligations as a general model encompassing all the aforementioned models, and equip it with a process algebra description. Using these instruments, we then compare the previously studied subclasses and characterize their relationships

    Writing in the Sky: Black Aviation in the Interwar Black Press

    This thesis traces the history of black aviation from 1921 to 1937 through textual analysis of the black press’s, in particular the Courier and the Defender’s, coverage of black aviation, including texts submitted to the newspapers by black aviators themselves. The thesis focuses on the symbiotic development of black aviation and the black press in their efforts to present black America’s technological capability – embodied in what is here termed “the goodwill message of black aviation” – as well as on the black newspapers’ role in promoting aviation in the African American community as a civil rights and economic cause. The thesis further explores the anxiety expressed in black newspapers for black pilots to be included in the United States Air Service and later Air Corps as the aviation campaign in black papers emphasized not only the civilian and economic aspect of aviation, but also its military dimension. The thesis thus presents black aviation as a well-developed phenomenon in the black press long before black pilots became famous through the involvement of the Tuskegee airmen in WW2. The text emphasizes the fact that Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York were hubs of black aviation well before the establishment of a civilian-pilot training facility at Tuskegee and other historically black colleges and universities in late 1930s and early 1940s. It demonstrates that black aviation – similarly to baseball integration, improved housing conditions, and criminal justice reform – was among the causes widely discussed and advocated for in the black press, because of its economic and military dimension. Depicting African Americans as technologically and mechanically skilled and thereby qualified for employment in aviation as well as inclusion in the US military are shown here to have been the primary objectives of the campaign. Finally, black aviation is defined as a civil-rights cause well before the much-covered Tuskegee airmen’s struggle for civil rights

    VISOR: a versatile haplotype-aware structural variant simulator for short- and long-read sequencing.

    Abstract Summary VISOR is a tool for haplotype-specific simulations of simple and complex structural variants (SVs). The method is applicable to haploid, diploid or higher ploidy simulations for bulk or single-cell sequencing data. SVs are implanted into FASTA haplotypes at single-basepair resolution, optionally with nearby single-nucleotide variants. Short or long reads are drawn at random from these haplotypes using standard error profiles. Double- or single-stranded data can be simulated and VISOR supports the generation of haplotype-tagged BAM files. The tool further includes methods to interactively visualize simulated variants in single-stranded data. The versatility of VISOR is unmet by comparable tools and it lays the foundation to simulate haplotype-resolved cancer heterogeneity data in bulk or at single-cell resolution.     Thermal characterization of Montmorillonite clays saturated with various cations

    Emanation thermal analysis (ETA), thermogravimetry and high temperature XRD were used to characterize the thermal behavior during dehydration of natural Na montmorillonite (Upton Wyoming, USA) and homoionic montmorillonite (MMT) samples saturated with different cations, i.e. Li+, Cs+, NH 4 +, Mg2+ and Al3+. ETA results characterized radon mobility and microstructure changes that accompanied the mass loss of the samples due to dehydration on heating in air. A collapse of interlayer space between the silicate sheets after water release from the MMT samples was characterized by a decrease of the radon release rate, ΔE. Decreases in c-axis basal spacing (d 001) values determined from XRD patterns for the different montmorillonite samples follow the sequence: Mg−MMT>Al−MMT>Li−MMT>Na−MMT>NH4−MMT>Cs−MMT The decrease of the radon release rate (ΔE) determined by ETA that characterized microstructure changes due to collapse of interlayer space corresponded well to differences in the c-axis basal spacing (Δd 001) values determined from the XRD patterns before and after samples dehydration.Peer Reviewe

    Stability investigation of polyPOSS-imide membranes for H2 puriïŹcation and their application in the steel industry

    In the present work, the high-temperature and long-term hydrothermal stability of novel polyPOSS-imide membranes for high-temperature hydrogen separation is investigated. The polyPOSS-imide membranes are found to exhibit an appropriate stability up to 300 C. Above this temperature the membrane selectivity rapidly decreases, which is seemingly related to changes in the molecular structure coupled to silanol condensation forming siloxane groups. Surprisingly, the exposure of the membrane to temperatures of up to 300 C even increases the H2 permeance together with the selective feature of the polyPOSS-imide layer. Subsequently, the long-term hydrothermal stability of the polyPOSS-imide membranes was investigated over a period of close to 1000 h at 250 C exposing the membrane to 10 mol% steam in the feed. An increase in H2/CH4 selectivity was observed upon water addition, and even though a minor drop was noticed over time during the hydrothermal operation, the selectivity exceeds the initial selectivity obtained in the dry feed atmosphere. After the removal of steam from the feed, the performance returns to its original state prior to the exposure to any steam showing appropriate steam stability of the polyPOSS-imide membranes. A conceptual process design and assessment was performed for application of these membranes involving a combination of carbon reuse and electrification of the steel making process with co-production of hydrogen. The results indicate a CO2 avoidance of 14%. The CO2 reduction achieved using renewable electricity in the proposed scheme is a factor 2.76 higher compared to a situation where the same renewable electricity would be fed in the electricity grid.publishedVersio
